Quedius antipodum Sharp is an endemic species from New Zealand. Here we describe its larva, the first of the species‐rich group of the south temperate ‘Quedius’ spp. This finding throws light on the controversy between the conventional systematics of Quedius Stephens and newer phylogenetic analyses, both of which are based on non‐larval characters only. We compare the larva of Q. antipodum with those of the north temperate Quedius (Quediina), where it was traditionally placed, and with the known larvae of Amblyopinina, a group where Q. antipodum was placed by recent phylogenetic studies. Sister‐group relationships of Q. antipodum within the tribe Staphylinini are explored based on larvae by means of parsimony analysis: 77 morphological characters scored for 20 species from 17 genera. Consistent with the adult morphology and DNA sequences, larvae‐based cladistic analysis confirms that Q. antipodum should not be placed in the north temperate genus Quedius. However, larval analysis alone remains dubious with respect to finding the exact sister relationships of that species.  相似文献

Carapace morphology was studied biometrically for each instar in a series of populations of Mojczella Olempska 1988 from the Ordovician strata exposed in Mójcza, Holy Cross Mountains, Poland. Phosphatic coatings of ostracod valves occur there in abundance from the top of the Arenig to the Late Caradoc. The lineage shows smooth acceleration in ontogenetic expression of the junction of crests C1 and C3, which originally were separated throughout the ontogeny, while in the latest populations the separation was preserved only in the earliest moult stage. Moreover, the velar structure, being originally developed as a wide, slightly convex, flange-like dolon in heteromorphs, became transformed into a convex dolon.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. In low viscosity media, Euglena gracilis strain Z responds to a sudden change in light intensity by a cessation of forward movement, followed by a reorientation of the locomotor flagellum which results in turning of the cell around the lateral axis (photophobic response). At a viscosity interface between low [~ 1 cP (centipoise)] and high (4000 cP) media, the cells exhibit avoidance responses or become immobilized in the higher viscosity medium. Upon changing the light intensity, free swimming cells have photophobic responses, while immobilized ones undergo body contractions. For cells immersed in media of varying viscosity, the delay between light stimulation and body contraction (transduction time) is shortest at high viscosities. From 500 to 2000 cP, where the cells are capable of both movement and light-induced body contractions, there is a logarithmic dependence of the transduction time on the viscosity. The transduction time does not vary appreciably with the intensity of the primary light stimulus within a range of 0.14-1.13 kW/m2.  相似文献

Shoot anatomy and secretory structures in Hypericum species (Hypericaceae)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The anatomy and ultrastructure of internodes, leaves and petals were compared in Hypericum elegans, H. inodorum, H. olympicum, H. forrestii and two genotypes of H. perforatum. Internode anatomy was variable between species with respect to the structure of the cortical and pith parenchyma, including the presence of secretory reservoirs. Also, the secondary growth was more extensive in shrubs, i.e. H. inodorum and H. forrestii. In leaves, phloem secretory reservoirs were formed in all species, mesophyll secretory reservoirs were absent only in H. elegans and internal nodules were present only in H. elegans and H. perforatum. The petals differed between species in the mesophyll structure and the occurrence and location of secretory structures. The phloem secretory reservoirs lacked sheaths, whereas these were distinct in the mesophyll reservoirs. Other ultrastructural traits of the reservoirs were similar in all the species studied, with the exception of the leucoplast ultrastructure. Social insect workers usually participate first in intranidal tasks (i.e. act as nurses within the nest) and then switch to extranidal tasks and become foragers. However, foragers sometimes switch back again to brood care and become reverted nurses. Behavioural and physiological correlates of the transition nurse–forager (behavioural maturation) and forager–reverted nurse (behavioural reversion) are relatively well known in the honeybee, although they are less explored in ants. To understand better the role of biogenic amines in ant behavioural maturation and behavioural reversion, the levels of octopamine (OA), dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5‐HT) are examined in the brains of nurses, foragers and reverted nurses of the red wood ant Formica polyctena Först. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Brain OA levels and the ratios OA : DA and OA : 5‐HT are higher in nurses than in foragers and reverted nurses. Reverted nurses and foragers do not differ significantly with respect to brain biogenic amine levels and amine ratios. Biogenic amine levels in brains of workers of F. polyctena are thus maturation‐related rather than task‐related. This is one of the first studies of neurochemical correlates of ant behavioural maturation and the first attempt to identify neurobiological correlates of ant behavioural reversion. The data obtained provide further evidence that neurobiological processes underlying honeybee and ant behavioural maturation and behavioural reversion reveal important differences.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Treatment of Euglena gracilis with the cationic detergent CTAB at concentrations of 0.05 mM or higher selectively inhibited the ability of the cells to respond with flagellar reorientation to a sudden decrease of light intensity (step-down photophobic response). The ability to respond similarly to an increase in light intensity (step-up photophobic response) was unaffected even at detergent concentrations at which the step-down response was completely inhibited. Electron microscopy of cells treated with 1.0 mM CTAB revealed selective destruction of the membrane of the reservoir and flagellum. No selective effects upon the step-down or step-up photophobic responses were found upon treatment of the cells with Triton X-100.  相似文献

The size of EPR signal I and its decay half-life were measuredon chloroplasts isolated from primary bean leaves after illuminationof 7 d old dark-grown seedlings. The results indicate that the ratio of P700/total chlorophylldecreased approximately 2-fold only between the 6th and 24thhour of illumination. The relative size of the signal increasedwith increasing light intensity up to 360 W m–2 in allstages of greening studied. Addition of HgCl2 (ImM) caused anincrease in the magnitude of the signal, especially at lowerlight intensities. Treatment of isolated chloroplasts with DCMU(20 µM) did not have any effect on the intensity of thesignal at the early stages of greening, that is 6 or 12 h ofillumination, but it caused a slight enhancement after 24 or48 h of Illumination. The higher intensity used for the signalproduction the smaller the enhancement observed. The addition of HgCl2 caused an increase in decay half-lifeof the signal 20-fold or 35-fold after 6 h or 48 h of greening,respectively. In DCMU-treated chloroplasts, an enhancing effectbecomes visible after 12 h of greening and subsequently it graduallyincreased. The data obtained were interpreted in terms of an alterationin efficiency of the re-reduction of P700+ under different conditionsand different stages of greening.  相似文献
