SUMMARY. 1. Regeneration of ammonium and phosphate by macro-zooplankton (Cladocera. adult copepods. and copepodites) was measured in Lake Calado. an Amazon floodplain lake, Macrozooplanktonabundances ranged between 1×104 and 3×105 individuals m−2.
2. Phosphate regeneration ranged from 0.2 to 1.3 μ mol PO4 m−2 b−1at station 1. located 2 km from the Solimoes River, and from 1.6 to8.3 μ mol PO4 m−2 h −1 at station 3, located 7 km from the SolimoesRiver. Ammonium regeneration at stations 1 and 3 ranged from 1.7 to11.9 and from 13.4 to 77.2 μ mol NH4 m−2 h−1. respectively.
3. Zooplankton regenerated ammonium and phosphate at similarrates during rising and falling waier. Regeneration by macrozooplankton was low compared to other tropical lakes and compared to microbesand microzooplankton in Lake Calado.  相似文献

Two phylogeographical lineages of arctic grayling, Thymallus arcticus , in Siberia are extensively characterized based on both molecular genetic (mtDNA control region sequences) and phenotypic (12 meristic characters) data. One lineage, occurring in the delta region of the Lena River as well as all other Arctic draining rivers sampled, corresponds to the subspecific taxon Thymallus arcticus pallasii , whose type locality is the Kolyma River. This taxon is proposed to be a postglacial colonizer of the Lena delta. The second lineage occurs throughout the rest of the Lena basin and is proposed to have survived in a glacial refugium in the middle reaches of the Lena. These lineages form reciprocally monophyletic groups based on mtDNA sequences (net divergence 3.2%), a relationship that is concordant with phenotypic data, and thus reflects distinct taxa. The upper Lena taxon is given the preliminary name of Thymallus arcticus lenensis . Phylogenetic analysis, together with previously published data from North America, reveals that mtDNA sequences from North American populations group within the diverse clade corresponding to T. a. pallasii in Siberia. Despite the relatively close genetic relationship of most North American haplotypes with those in northern Siberia, inferences of fragmentation between the continents are supported, but bidirectional movements between the two continents are seen as likely. Despite inclusion in the clade representing T. a. pallasii in Siberia, the source of the relatively divergent Nahanni refuge haplotypes in North America is not resolved. Otherwise, inferences of postglacial expansion across several thousand kilometres are well supported within North America, but only smaller-scale colonization events among drainages are supported in Siberia.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 511–525.  相似文献

Antigenic Makeup of Subcellular Fractions of Trypanosoma cruzi   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes from cultures were separated into nuclear, mitochondrial, lysosomal, microsomal, and cell-sap fractions. Enzymic and ultrastructutal controls served to determine the cleanness of separation. The bulk of the DNA was in the nuclear (78%) and mitochondrial (12%) fractions. RNA was found in microsomal (74%) and cell-sap (14%) fractions. Marker enzyme distribution (succinic dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase, and glucose-6-phosphatase) was compared with their distribution in mammalian tissues. Subcellular localization of antigens by Ouchterlony tests revealed 2 specific precipitin lines in cell sap and 1 in the microsomal fraction. These antigens may prove diagnostically and immunoprotectively valuable.  相似文献

Nineteen clones of Trypanosoma cruzi were obtained as single-cell isolates from Triatoma infestans. Ten of the clones were isolates from a patient with chronic Chagas' disease; nine clones were isolates from a dog infected with T. cruzi strain CA-I isolated originally from a chronic chagasic patient. The growth kinetics and peak modal Coulter volume of these clones were characterized. Significant inter- and intra-group differences between growth rates and peak modal volumes were found. These data indicate that subpopulations and, consequently, genetic heterogeneity of T. cruzi exist in chronic chagasic patients. All of the clones infected vertebrate cells in vitro.  相似文献

A study of plankton samples collected in the Western Sargasso Sea during nine cruises has shown discontinuity between samples from different latitudes as regards their percentage, abundance, and number of species of Acantharia. Limits separating zones rich in Acantharia from those poor in Acantharia were singled out. The latitude at which the difference in abundance occurs can vary. This is in accord with differences in primary production, phytoplankton, and mesopelagic fishes noted by other workers who believe that the points of these faunal changes correspond to a temperature change indicated as “thermal fronts.”  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The relation of humoral antibody response to protection was evaluated in mice immunized with whole homogenates of Trypanosoma cruzi or with its flagellar fraction by direct agglutination and indirect fluorescent antibody test as well as by lytic and neutralizing activity against blood trypomastigotes. The results indicated that lytic antibodies were not implicated directly in protection against these trypanosomes. It was evident from histopathologic examination that the higher the degree of protection achieved, the lower the tissue damage observed in the challenged mice. Serum-neutralizing activity was highest in the groups protected most effectively.  相似文献
