SUMMARY: On exposing a strain of Bacterium coli 28.D.10 in a surface film at atmospheric temperature to atmospheres of different moisture contents, it was found that for relative humidities between 100 and 66% the numbers of survivors decreased with decreasing humidity. There was also some evidence of a slight increase in survivors for a decrease in relative humidity from 43 to 0%.
The percentage of survivors of Bact. coli after exposure to quaternary ammonium disinfectants also decreased with relative humidity between 100 and 66% but no significant differences were found for changes in relative humidity below 66%. The numbers of survivors of a culture of Staphylococcus aureus were the same after storage at a relative humidity of 43% as at 100%; drying did not appear to affect the sensitivity of Staph. aureus to quaternary ammonium compounds. Tests of the effect of storage time in a saturated atmosphere gave results which were not entirely consistent, but where differences were observed, there was a lower percentage of survivors for freshly inoculated films than for films which had been stored for 3 hr, presumably because a fresh film was more easily removed to the disinfectant.
When either Bact. coli or Staph. aureus was exposed to a disinfectant, the percentage of survivors was higher when the organisms were in a surface film than when they were inoculated directly into the disinfectant. Agitation during exposure reduced the numbers of survivors from a surface film. Neither the glass nor the metal coming in contact with the disinfectants affected the level of survivors.
Under the conditions of testing, sodium hypochlorite was a more effective disinfectant than the quaternary ammonium compounds used.  相似文献

We here describe a new species of cyclopid copepod, Eucyclops bathanalicola sp. nov. , parasitic on a gastropod endemic to Lake Tanganyika, Bathanalia straeleni (Cerithioidea, Paludomidae). E. bathanalicola is distinguished by the possession of praecoxal claws on the maxillules, by the modified maxillae which lack any trace of an endopod on the powerful distal claw, and by the reduction of the maxillipeds to minute unarmed lobes. In the character states exhibited by the female body, antennules and swimming legs 1–5, the new species closely resembles a typical free living Eucyclops . The impact of the adoption of parasitism as a life habit is expressed primarily in the modification of the postmandibular mouthparts. As a member of the Cyclopidae, this species represents a unique foray into a parasitic lifestyle from an otherwise free-living group of copepods inhabiting Lake Tanganyika. This is the first record of a parasitic copepod on a mollusc host within this ancient lake and only the second family of freshwater gastropods reported to host copepods.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 146 , 275–285. Although predation of individual social insect workers has little effect on colony fitness, nest predation may be a significant selective agent because it can result in substantial loss of reproductive success. Surprisingly, the consequences of predation on social insect nests are poorly understood. In the present study, we investigate the factors that correlate with the probability of predation by echidnas, Tachyglossus aculeatus , on nests and colonies of the facultatively polydomous meat ant, Iridomyrmex purpureus. In particular, we investigate whether colony fragmentation provides a mechanism for reducing the costs of echidna predation. Over 2 years, 138 of the 140 colonies on our study site were depredated. Nest predation was most common in woodlands but with no obvious seasonal patterns. The probability of nest predation was positively correlated with the size of the nest, and negatively correlated with the density of surrounding nests. Although polydomous colonies are at a similar risk of predation by echidnas, the proportion of depredated nests is negatively correlated with the number of nests; thus, the probability that one or more nests avoid predation is increased with increasing nest numbers. The sequences of a 1.8-kbp macronuclear DNA molecule (V3), and the majority of its micronuclear counterpart, are reported. The macronuclear V3 DNA molecule contains an open reading frame that is interrupted by a single intron, while the micronuclear copy is interrupted by four internal eliminated sequences, one of which is located within the intron. The predicted protein product of the macronuclear V3 gene is a 471-amino acid polypeptide that is very similar to a group of protein-serine/threonine kinases from both plant and animal species, some of whose members appear to be involved in cell cycle or growth control.  相似文献

Six streptococci isolated in high numbers from different mastitis samples have been identified as strains of Streptococcus bovis. The properties of the strains were compared with those strains of Strep, bovis from culture collections and also with those of two strains of Strep. mutans. Physiological properties, including ability to form capsules and dextran, the properties of the lactate dehydrogenases and hybridization between the deoxyribonucleic acid of the unknown strains and the reference strain of Strep. bovis were determined. It is concluded that Strep. bovis comprises strains with heterogeneous properties. No subgroups were apparent. The pathogenicity to the udder was determined for eight strains of Strep. bovis and one of Strep. mutans.  相似文献
