Fluorometric, Chromatographic, and Spectronic Evidence for the Non-indolic Nature of Citrus Auxin

Evidence for the non-indolic nature of the new citrus auxinis presented on the basis of fluorometric properties, thin-layerchromatography, Ehrlich's colour reaction, paper electrophoresis,and the infra-red spectra determinations. Citrus auxin had alower Rf in TLC than IAA, did not give the typical indole reactionwith Ehrlich's reagent, and behaved differently in electrophoresis.The infra-red spectra also provided preliminary informationconcerning chemical structure. The hypothesis that indolic compoundsconstitute the only natural auxins in higher plants should berevised in view of this evidence that a non-indole auxin existsin higher plants.     

Development of a low input system for growing wheat (Triticum vulgare) in a permanent understorey of white clover (Trifolium repens)

In three field experiments carried out during 1989-91, a permanent sward of pure white clover (Trifolium repens) was established to provide a source of N for winter or spring wheat crops (Triticum vulgare) directly drilled into the legume. Spring-sown wheat failed to compete with the clover, but wheat sown in the autumn established successfully. N fertiliser was applied to all three experiments at rates of 0, 50 and 100 kg N ha“¹ measurements of grain and whole-crop silage yields were made. Yields were low for all treatments, probably because of the dry conditions prevailing and the low soil N status of the site used. Yield responses to fertiliser were significant, despite the contribution to plant nutrition that the clover was intended to make. A key feature of the work was that the clover survived successive cereal crops and could be grazed and used as an understorey for later crops. Further, response to fertiliser N diminished with a successive crop implying a build-up of available soil N, which measurements confirmed had occurred. Use of the system obviated the need to use pesticides, although reasons for the lack of pest damage were not clear.     

The horizontal and vertical distribution of flying insects near artificial windbreaks

Lath fences 3 ft and 8 ft high affected the horizontal distribution of flying insects similarly: most insects accumulated at a distance equal to 2–3 times the height of each fence to leeward, where catches, measured at 14 and 38 in. (≡ to 0·4 times the height of the fence above the ground) were 30–40 % greater than in exposed positions. Behind an 8 ft fence accumulations extended vertically to 12–16 ft (≡ to 1·5-2·0 times the height of the fence). Vertical profiles of weak-flying insects, in winds > 3 m.p.h. differed in sheltered and exposed positions; in shelter the boundary layer was deeper and insects were more abundant nearer the ground than elsewhere. For strong flyers, and insects which flew only in winds < 2 m.p.h., vertical profiles in sheltered and exposed positions were indistinguishable.     

Engagement of the phallosome in blowflies

The engagement of male and female parts during copulation is described in detail for Lucilia sericata Meigen. The occurrence on the phallosome of lateral ducts and apertures for accessory gland secretion is reported for a number of species of Calliphorinae.
