Theory suggests that spatial structuring should select for intermediate levels of virulence in parasites, but empirical tests are rare and have never been conducted with castration (sterilizing) parasites. To test this theory in a natural landscape, we construct a spatially explicit model of the symbiosis between the ant-plant Cordia nodosa and its two, protecting ant symbionts, Allomerus and Azteca . Allomerus is also a castration parasite, preventing fruiting to increase colony fecundity. Limiting the dispersal of Allomerus and host plant selects for intermediate castration virulence. Increasing the frequency of the mutualist, Azteca , selects for higher castration virulence in Allomerus , because seeds from Azteca -inhabited plants are a public good that Allomerus exploits. These results are consistent with field observations and, to our knowledge, provide the first empirical evidence supporting the hypothesis that spatial structure can reduce castration virulence and the first such evidence in a natural landscape for either mortality or castration virulence.  相似文献

We have developed a knowledge-based simulation of DNA metabolismthat accurately predicts the actions of enzymes on DNA undera large number of environmental conditions. Previous simulationsof enzyme systems rely predominantly on mathematical models. We use a frame-based representation to model enzymes, substratesand conditions. Interactions between these objects are expressedusing production rules and an underlying truth maintenance system. The system performs rapid inference and can explain its reasoning.A graphical interface provides access to all elements of thesimulation, including object representations and explanationgraphs. Predicting enzyme action is the first step in the developmentof a large knowledge base to envision the metabolic pathwaysof DNA replication and repair. Habitat fragmentation and invasive species often contribute to the decline of native taxa. Since the penetration of non‐native species into natural habitat may be facilitated by habitat fragmentation, it is important to examine how these two factors interact. Previous research documented that, in contrast to most other arthropod taxa, spiders increased in density and morphospecies richness with decreasing fragment area and increasing fragment age (time since insularization) in urban habitat fragments in San Diego County, California, USA. We tested whether a specific mechanism, an increase in non‐native species with fragmentation, is responsible for this pattern. We found that both native and non‐native taxa contributed to the pattern. Abundance of native spiders per pitfall trap sample increased significantly with decreasing fragment size (i.e. a negative density–area relationship) and abundance of non‐natives increased significantly with increasing fragment age. The proportion of non‐native individuals also increased significantly with age. One non‐native species, Oecobius navus, comprised the majority of non‐native individuals (82.2%) and a significant proportion of total individuals (25.1%). Richness of spider families per sample (family density) increased with fragment age due to an increase in the occurrence of non‐natives in older fragments, however, native family richness did not vary with age or area. Due to increasing dominance by non‐native and some native families, family evenness declined with decreasing fragment size and increasing fragment age. Native and non‐native abundance covaried positively arguing against strong negative interactions between the two groups. O. navus had a strong positive association with another common non‐native arthropod, the Argentine ant (Linepitheme humile), suggesting a possible direct interaction. In contrast, abundance of native spiders was negatively correlated with Argentine ant abundance. We hypothesize that fragmentation in this semiarid habitat increases productivity in smaller and older fragments enhancing the density of both native and non‐native taxa.  相似文献

Hundreds of studies have investigated the sources and nature of information that prey gather about their predators and the ways in which prey use this information to mediate their risk of predation. However, relatively little theoretical or empirical work has considered the question of how long information should be maintained and used by prey animals in making behavioural decisions. Here, we tested whether the size of the memory window associated with predator recognition could be affected by an intrinsic factor, such as size and growth rate of the prey. We maintained groups of predator-naive woodfrog, Lithobates sylvaticus, tadpoles at different temperatures for 8 days to induce differences in tadpole size. We then conditioned small and large tadpoles to recognize the odour of a predatory tiger salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum. Tadpoles were then maintained either on a high or low growth trajectory for another 8 days, after which they were tested for their response to the predator. Our results suggest that the memory window related to predator recognition of tadpoles is determined by both their size and/or growth rate at the time of learning and their subsequent growth rate post-learning.  相似文献

Recent development of screen-like bonded weaves of titanium wire for orthopaedic implant anchorage affords a unique opportunity for analytic studies of porous ingrowth micromechanics. The regular geometry of individual wires and the periodicity of the mesh weave are exploited in a series of two-dimensional finite element models, mapping interstitial bone stress fields as a function of ingrowth depth and wire size, shape, and spacing.

When the depth of bone ingrowth was less than one wire diameter, peak bone stresses always occurred at the leading (i.e. deepest) edge of bone ingrowth, immediately adjacent to the wire. As ingrowth depth approached a full wire diameter, peak local bone stresses were 2–9 times the nominal applied host bone stress, with greater stresses occurring for lower screen weave densities. Within multiple screen layers, the top layer consistently experienced the peak stress and transmitted most of the applied load, regardless of the number of underlying screen layers surrounded by bone. Neither wire size variations nor partial wire flattening substantially affected general trends in stress predictions.  相似文献
