1 Integrated management of crop pests requires the identification of the appropriate spatial scale at which colonization processes occurs. We assessed, by coupling demographic and genetic methods, the relative contribution of local and transient migrants of the grain aphid Sitobion avenae to wheat field colonization in spring. 2 We examined, during two consecutive years, the daily colonization of wheat by aphid migrants and compared this with daily aphid flight monitored by a local 12.2‐m suction trap. The genetic profiles of aphids landing on crops were compared with those of both flying aphids caught by the suction trap and local populations from arable crops and hedgerows. 3 In the first year, we observed: (i) a strong correlation between aphids colonizing the crop and those moving within the crop and a close genetic similarity between aphids from these samples and (ii) a high level of genetic differentiation between these aphids and populations from local cereals and field margins. In the second year, the number of migrants recorded on the wheat was three‐fold higher than in the previous year, and less correlated with that recorded by the suction trap. This was associated with a lack of genetic differentiation between all samples. 4 This variation in the colonization processes resulted mainly in an abrupt increase in abundance of genotypes from local over‐wintering sites in 2004. This suggests that, despite the long range dispersal potential of the grain aphid, outbreak risks could be mainly determined at a local scale, encouraging the design of relatively small management units.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by Fusarium culmorum is an economically important disease of wheat that may cause serious yield and quality losses under favorable climate conditions. The development of disease-resistant cultivars is the most effective control strategy. Worldwide, there is heavy reliance on the resistance pool originating from Asian wheats, but excellent field resistance has also been observed among European winter wheats. The objective of this study was to map and characterize quantitative traits loci (QTL) of resistance to FHB among European winter wheats. A population of 194 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) was genotyped from a cross between two winter wheats Renan (resistant)/Récital (susceptible) with microsatellites, AFLP and RFLP markers. RILs were assessed under field conditions For 3 years in one location. Nine QTLs were detected, and together they explained 30-45% of the variance, depending on the year. Three of the QTLs were stable over the 3 years. One stable QTL, QFhs.inra.2b, was mapped to chromosome 2B and two QTLs QFhs.inra.5a2 and QFhs.inra5a3, to chromosome 5A; each of these QTLs explained 6.9-18.6% of the variance. Other QTLs were identified on chromosome 2A, 3A, 3B, 5D, and 6D, but these had a smaller effect on FHB resistance. One of the two QTLs on chromosome 5A was linked to gene B1 controlling the presence of awns. Overlapping QTLs for FHB resistance were those for plant height or/and flowering time. Our results confirm that wheat chromosomes 2A, 3A, 3B, and 5A carry FHB resistance genes, and new resistance factors were identified on chromosome arms 2BS and 5AL. Markers flanking these QTLs should be useful tools for combining the resistance to FHB of Asian and European wheats to increase the resistance level of cultivars.

In this review, after giving some figures on the economic impact of aphids on agricultural production, we describe the different mechanisms leading to yield losses (direct damage due to sieve drain and plant reaction, indirect damage, often the most important, due to virus transmission). Then, after a history of chemical control and of its limits, the main control strategies (chemical control with decision rules, plant resistance, biological control, farming practices) are reviewed in the light of an integrated pest management approach. Several topics tackled in this article are exemplified for cereal aphids, which are among the most important in Europe as direct feeders and virus vectors.

Yellow rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis, is one of the most damaging diseases affecting bread wheat in temperate regions. Although resistance to yellow rust is frequently overcome by new virulent races, a durable form of resistance in the French bread wheat Camp Rémy (CR) has remained effective since its introduction in 1980. We used 217 F7 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from the cross between CR and the susceptible cultivar Récital to identify and map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) involved in durable yellow rust resistance. Six significant QTLs that were stable over a 4-year period were detected. Two QTLs, denoted QYr.inra-2DS and QYr.inra-5BL.2, were located on the short arm of chromosome 2D and the long arm of chromosome 5B, respectively. Each explained on average 25–35% of the observed phenotypic variation and were probably inherited from Cappelle Desprez, a parent of CR that confers durable adult plant resistance to yellow rust. QYr.inra-2DS probably corresponds to the Yr16 gene. The most consistent QTL, designated QYr.inra-2BL, was located on the centromeric region of chromosome 2B and explained 61% of the phenotypic variation in 2003. This QTL was responsible for seedling-stage resistance and may correspond to a cluster of genes, including Yr7. The remaining QTLs were mapped to the short arm of chromosome 2B (R2=22–70%) and to the long arm of chromosomes 2A (R2=0.20–0.40) and 5B (R2=0.18–0.26). This specific combination of seedling and adult plant resistance genes found in CR and CD may constitute the key to their durable resistance against yellow rust.

Predominance of sexual reproduction in Romanian populations of the aphid Sitobion avenae inferred from phenotypic and genetic structure
Models of coexistence of sexual and asexual lineages in aphids assume that obligate parthenogenetic lineages predominate in areas with mild winter climate because of their high reproductive output, while sexual lineages predominate in areas with severe winter because they produce eggs resistant to frost. To validate this hypothesis in natural conditions, the reproductive mode of populations of the aphid Sitobion avenae was assessed in two very contrasting climatic situations, Romania (severe winter) and Western France (mild winter). To achieve this, reproductive modes were inferred from both (1) the population composition in sexual and asexual forms in autumn, and (2) the genetic structure of Romanian and French populations of S. avenae using microsatellite markers. Romanian populations encompassed a high proportion of sexual forms and were characterised by a very high genotypic diversity and low linkage disequilibrium. In constrast, the French population showed frequent linkage disequilibria, low genetic diversity, and high level of clonal amplification with two asexual genotypes representing over 60% of the sample. In agreement with the model's predictions, these results clearly indicate that sexual reproduction in S. avenae is predominant under the continental climate of Romania, while asexual lineages prevail under the oceanic climate of Western France.

Many aphid species exhibit a variation in reproductive mode which is influenced by winter climate regimes, with cyclical parthenogenetic (CP)lines dominating in cold winter areas (because they produce cold-resistant eggs)and obligate parthenogenetic (OP) ones in mild winter regions (because of their parthenogenetic overwintering).Genetic studies on several aphid species have shown that the OP trait can be transmitted during sexual events involving the 2 types of lines. This genetic system could be considered as a local safeguarding mechanism for OP alleles in case severe frost would have killed all parthenogenetically overwintering individuals. However, this strategy would only be efficient in restoring local polymorphism in breeding systems if the newly hatched OP recombinants remain competitive over their CP counterparts. In this study we compared egg hatching sequences of CP and OP F1 clones from several crosses obtained for 2 cereal aphid species,Sitobion avenae (constant 5℃,8 h of light)and Rhopalosiphum padi (winter outdoor conditions). For S.avenae,we obtained F1 offspring from 6 crosses, involving 4 clones while in R.padi F1 were obtained from 11 crosses involving 14 clones. We showed that in both species proportions of OP clones were higher in the first half of the progeny relative to the second half.In addition,F1 OP clones hatched in the mean about a week earlier than their CP sibs, which gives them a demographic advantage at the start of the growth season. We then discussed the consequences of this fitness advantage for the maintenance and spread of the OP trait in aphid populations.

The chromosome 7Dv of Aegilops ventricosa (syn. Triticum ventricosum, 2n = 4x = 28, genome DvDvMvMv) carries the gene Pch1 for resistance to eyespot. This gene has previously been transferred to chromosome 7D of bread wheat, T. aestivum (2n = 6x = 42, genome AABBDD). To (1) enhance the level of resistance of bread wheat by increasing the copy number of Pch1, and (2) create eyespot-resistant triticales, meiotically stable Pch1-carrying durum lines were selected from the backcross progenies of a cross between Ae. ventricosa and T. durum cv. Creso ph1c (2n = 4x = 28, genome AABB). The Pch1 transfer, likely resulting from homoeologous recombination, was located at the distal position on the long arm of chromosome 7A. The 7A microsatellite marker Xgwm 698 was found closely linked in repulsion to the introgression in the resistant recombination lines, and the endopeptidase allele located on chromosome 7A of cv. Creso ph1c was lost.

Aphids typically reproduce by cyclical parthenogenesis, with a single sexual generation alternating with numerous asexual generations each year. However, some species exhibit different life cycle variants with various degrees of investment in sexuality. We tested the hypothesis that these life cycle variants are selected in space and time by climatic factors, mainly winter severity, due to an ecological link between sexual reproduction and the production of a cold-resistant form, the egg. More than 600 clones of the aphid Sitobion avenae F. were collected in five to six regions of France with contrasting climates during 3 consecutive years and compared for their production of sexual forms in standardised conditions. As predicted by a recent model of breeding system distribution and maintenance in aphids, we found a clear shift between northern and southern populations, with decreasing sexuality southwards. Life cycle variants investing entirely or partly in sexual reproduction in autumn predominated in northern sites, while obligate parthenogens and male-producers dominated in the southern sites. No clear east–west pattern of decreasing sexuality was found, and annualvariation in the relative proportions of life cycle variants was not clearly influenced by the severity of the previous winter. These latter results suggest that other selection pressures could interact with winter climate to determine the local life cycle polymorphism in S. avenae populations.
