Coralline algae are considered among the most sensitive species to near future ocean acidification. We tested the effects of elevated pCO2 on the metabolism of the free‐living coralline alga Lithothamnion corallioides (“maerl”) and the interactions with changes in temperature. Specimens were collected in North Brittany (France) and grown for 3 months at pCO2 of 380 (ambient pCO2), 550, 750, and 1000 μatm (elevated pCO2) and at successive temperatures of 10°C (ambient temperature in winter), 16°C (ambient temperature in summer), and 19°C (ambient temperature in summer +3°C). At each temperature, gross primary production, respiration (oxygen flux), and calcification (alkalinity flux) rates were assessed in the light and dark. Pigments were determined by HPLC. Chl a, carotene, and zeaxanthin were the three major pigments found in L. corallioides thalli. Elevated pCO2 did not affect pigment content while temperature slightly decreased zeaxanthin and carotene content at 10°C. Gross production was not affected by temperature but was significantly affected by pCO2 with an increase between 380 and 550 μatm. Light, dark, and diel (24 h) calcification rates strongly decreased with increasing pCO2 regardless of the temperature. Although elevated pCO2 only slightly affected gross production in L. corallioides, diel net calcification was reduced by up to 80% under the 1,000 μatm treatment. Our findings suggested that near future levels of CO2 will have profound consequences for carbon and carbonate budgets in rhodolith beds and for the sustainability of these habitats.  相似文献

Species interactions are integral drivers of community structure and can change from competitive to facilitative with increasing environmental stress. In subtidal marine ecosystems, however, interactions along physical stress gradients have seldom been tested. We observed seaweed canopy interactions across depth and latitudinal gradients to test whether light and temperature stress structured interaction patterns. We also quantified interspecific and intraspecific interactions among nine subtidal canopy seaweed species across three continents to examine the general nature of interactions in subtidal systems under low consumer pressure. We reveal that positive and neutral interactions are widespread throughout global seaweed communities and the nature of interactions can change from competitive to facilitative with increasing light stress in shallow marine systems. These findings provide support for the stress gradient hypothesis within subtidal seaweed communities and highlight the importance of canopy interactions for the maintenance of subtidal marine habitats experiencing environmental stress.  相似文献

The temporal stability of aggregate community properties depends on the dynamics of the component species. Since species growth can compensate for the decline of other species, synchronous species dynamics can maintain stability (i.e. invariability) in aggregate properties such as community abundance and metabolism. In field experiments we tested the separate and interactive effects of two stressors associated with storminess--loss of a canopy-forming species and mechanical disturbances--on species synchrony and community respiration of intertidal hard-bottom communities on Helgoland Island, NE Atlantic. Treatments consisted of regular removal of the canopy-forming seaweed Fucus serratus and a mechanical disturbance applied once at the onset of the experiment in March 2006. The level of synchrony in species abundances was assessed from estimates of species percentage cover every three months until September 2007. Experiments at two sites consistently showed that canopy loss significantly reduced species synchrony. Mechanical disturbance had neither separate nor interactive effects on species synchrony. Accordingly, in situ measurements of CO(2)-fluxes showed that canopy loss, but not mechanical disturbances, significantly reduced net primary productivity and temporal variation in community respiration during emersion periods. Our results support the idea that compensatory dynamics may stabilise aggregate properties. They further suggest that the ecological consequences of the loss of a single structurally important species may be stronger than those derived from smaller-scale mechanical disturbances in natural ecosystems.  相似文献

The brittle-star Acrocnida brachiata (Montagu) lives in sandy-bottom habitat of both intertidal and subtidal zones along the coasts of the northwestern Europe. An allozyme frequency-based survey (five enzyme loci) was combined with a mitochondrial (mt) COI haplotype analysis (598-bp sequences) on 17 populations to trace back past colonization pathways from the actual population structure of the species. Both genetic markers display a sharp genetic break between intertidal (clade I) and subtidal populations (clade S). This break corresponds to an allele frequency inversion at three enzyme loci (Hk, Pgm and Pgi) and a deep divergence of about 20% in mtCOI sequences between most of the intertidal populations and other samples. The geographic distribution of clade I seems to be more restricted than clade S as it is absent from the intertidal of the eastern English Channel and North Sea and may be replaced by clade S in south Brittany. Applying previously published rates of mutation, divergence between the two clades is estimated to pre-date 5 million years ago and may be due to allopatric speciation processes at the Mio-Pliocene transition. The occurrence of putative hybrids in a few localities, however, suggests incomplete cryptic speciation with secondary contact zones. The relative importance of colonization history vs. habitat specialization are discussed in the light of neutral evolution as tested from mtCOI gene sequences. While differential selection seems to have contributed little to the separation of the lineages, it may have played a role in the emergence of adaptive polymorphisms in the hybrid zone. Furthermore, congruent spatial patterns of differentiation were observed in both clades suggesting a recent increase in population size. These findings are in agreement with a recent expansion of the populations during or after the formation of the English Channel, from a southern refuge for the subtidal clade whereas the intertidal clade may have persisted further north. As previously suspected for a species with a very short pelagic larval phase, contemporary gene flow between distant or adjacent populations appears to be extremely reduced or even absent.  相似文献

Photosynthetic microphytobenthic activity has increasingly been examined using pulse‐amplitude‐modulated (PAM) fluorescence techniques. Nevertheless, estimating carbon production rates from fluorescence measurements implies the establishment of reliable relationships. The aim of this study was to determine such a relationship from field measurements of both PAM fluorescence and CO2 fluxes. Three study sites of varying sedimentary features were investigated in different seasons. Both linear and with plateau relationships were obtained between the fluorescence parameter (relative electron transport rate [rETR]) and the community‐level carbon‐fixation rate (gross community primary production rate [GCP] in mg C · m?2 · h?1). The correlation calculated from the whole data set (i.e., all sites and all seasons) was very strong (n = 106; r = 0.928). Significant correlations were also obtained for light‐curve parameters assessed with the two methods: Pm (n = 8; r = 0.920) and Ik (n = 8; r = 0.818). Total community‐level carbon fixation for the emersion period was calculated from fluorescence measurements according to the relationship established between GCP and rETR, and between light‐curve parameters, and the results were compared to the estimation obtained directly from GCP measurements. The agreement between the two estimations was quite good for both ways of calculation (with a mean discrepancy of 30% for the first one and ?2% for the second one). These results suggest the potential application of PAM measurements to calculate carbon‐fixation rates at large spatial and temporal scales, provided that a set of experiments coupled with CO2‐flux measurements are performed.  相似文献

Long-term variations (1979–1990) of three benthic communities (Eastern Channel, France) were analysed by means of factor correspondence analysis (FCA), a multivariate method of ordination in reduced space, and rank-frequency diagrams (RFD). FCA distinguished periods of relative homogeneity and periods of strong variations in the structure of the communities. Two communities, the pebbles community and a rich and diverse mussel (Mytilus edulis) bed, showed great variations in the abundance of the main species (Ophiothrix fragilis in the first one, andM. edulis in the second one) which generated the enrichment of the community by their suspension-feeding behaviour. Beyond the multi-annual cycle induced by these variations, both communities seemed to be quite stable as no continuing trends could be seen. The third community, established on heterogeneous sand, also showed a multi-annual cycle linked to granulometric variations of the sediment. As passive supplies of detritus were not important and suspension feeders could hardly live in these conditions, the community stayed poor and was dominated by carnivores and deposit-feeders.  相似文献

Laminaria saccharina (Lamouroux) form the largest, most abundant and conspicuous seaweed populations along the French coast of the eastern English Channel. As they are located in the intertidal zone, they are exposed to considerable irradiance variations, mainly related to tidal cycles. The response of these macro‐algae to light variations over a simulated daily tidal cycle was investigated in the laboratory during spring, autumn and winter using chlorophyll fluorescence and pigment analysis. The maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry (Fv/Fm) and the operating PSII efficiency (ΦPSII) showed clear daily cycles according to the irradiance variation throughout the 12 h simulated tidal cycle, whereas the pattern of the relative photosynthetic electron transport rate (rETR) was not so obvious. The algae reacted to the light increase by developing photoprotective mechanisms able to dissipate the excess energy reaching PSII by the de‐epoxidation of violaxanthin into zeaxanthin. Because of their better acclimation to strong irradiance, spring populations were less affected by this light treatment than were winter populations. In particular, L. saccharina showed more pigments of the xanthophyll cycle in spring to cope with strong irradiance exposure. A comprehensive expert consultation was conducted in order to assess the status, trends and the most important drivers of change in the abundance and geographical distribution of kelp forests in European waters. This consultation included an on-line questionnaire, results from a workshop and data provided by a selected group of experts working on kelp forest mapping and eco-evolutionary research. Differences in status and trends according to geographical areas, species identity and small-scale variations within the same habitat where shown by assembling and mapping kelp distribution and trend data. Significant data gaps for some geographical regions, like the Mediterranean and the southern Iberian Peninsula, were also identified. The data used for this study confirmed a general trend with decreasing abundance of some native kelp species at their southern distributional range limits and increasing abundance in other parts of their distribution (Saccharina latissima and Saccorhiza polyschides). The expansion of the introduced species Undaria pinnatifida was also registered. Drivers of observed changes in kelp forests distribution and abundance were assessed using experts’ opinions. Multiple possible drivers were identified, including global warming, sea urchin grazing, harvesting, pollution and fishing pressure, and their impact varied between geographical areas. Overall, the results highlight major threats for these ecosystems but also opportunities for conservation. Major requirements to ensure adequate protection of coastal kelp ecosystems along European coastlines are discussed, based on the local to regional gaps detected in the study.  相似文献

Gross primary production (GPP) and respiration (R) in an intertidal Zostera noltii (Hornemann, 1832) community were estimated each month from in situ CO2 flux measurements during the emersion period in the Bay of Morlaix (France). Simultaneously, the Chlorophyll a biomass of Z. noltii leaves, associated epiphytes and sediment within the benthic chambers were also monitored. The significant positive exponential relationship established between R and the maximum daily temperature emphasized that temperature was a good predictor of seasonal variation in the community R in Z. noltii bed. In contrast, the amplitude of the fitted curve on GPP was low and represented <25% of the annual mean value (90.9 ± 15.2 mgC m−2 h−1). The Chlorophyll a biomass of sediment was high (133.70 ± 22.96 mg m−2) but it was likely constituted by detritus which did not contribute much to the community GPP. The Chlorophyll a biomass of associated epiphytes was higher in winter and varied over the year inversely with Z. noltii. Therefore, the asynchronous dynamic of primary producers could support a constant rate of production at community scale over the year.  相似文献

The two brittle-stars Acrocnida brachiata (Montagu 1804) and A. spatulispina (Stöhr and Muths in J Mar Biol Assoc, 2009) exhibit strong spatial segregation along the coast of Brittany (France), the first being subtidally distributed relative to the other intertidal species. Despite a very high degree of mitochondrial DNA divergence, previous preliminary results hinted at the potential for hybridization to occur. Therefore, we specifically aim to determine local levels of hybridization between these two species and to investigate the relative roles of pre- and post- zygotic isolation processes acting to decrease local hybridization patterns. Mitochondrial DNA, allozymes and the Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 region of the ribosomal DNA were all used on 529 brittle-stars sampled locally in June and September 2005, among six stations in Douarnenez Bay, a site situated at the tip of Brittany. Only 2.6% of all samples analyzed were identified as potential hybrids. However, these were twice more frequent in June, just after the reproductive period, than in September after selective mortality acted to reduce the proportions of hybrids. In addition to the abrupt bathymetric segregation between the two species, spawning asynchrony also clearly restricts hybridization to low levels, which shows the importance of pre-zygotic mechanisms in maintaining reproductive isolation. Moreover, both limited hybridization events and adult mortalities following reproduction tend to generate local genetic differentiation at the intra-species level. On the contrary, the genetic structure is homogenized by migration of juveniles or adults and hybrids mortalities over the summer period.  相似文献
