Intrinsic motivations drive the acquisition of knowledge and skills on the basis of novel or surprising stimuli or the pleasure to learn new skills. In so doing, they are different from extrinsic motivations that are mainly linked to drives that promote survival and reproduction. Intrinsic motivations have been implicitly exploited in several psychological experiments but, due to the lack of proper paradigms, they are rarely a direct subject of investigation. This article investigates how different intrinsic motivation mechanisms can support the learning of visual skills, such as “foveate a particular object in space”, using a gaze contingency paradigm. In the experiment participants could freely foveate objects shown in a computer screen. Foveating each of two “button” pictures caused different effects: one caused the appearance of a simple image (blue rectangle) in unexpected positions, while the other evoked the appearance of an always-novel picture (objects or animals). The experiment studied how two possible intrinsic motivation mechanisms might guide learning to foveate one or the other button picture. One mechanism is based on the sudden, surprising appearance of a familiar image at unpredicted locations, and a second one is based on the content novelty of the images. The results show the comparative effectiveness of the mechanism based on image novelty, whereas they do not support the operation of the mechanism based on the surprising location of the image appearance. Interestingly, these results were also obtained with participants that, according to a post experiment questionnaire, had not understood the functions of the different buttons suggesting that novelty-based intrinsic motivation mechanisms might operate even at an unconscious level. 相似文献

Floral scent is a key mediator in many plant–pollinator interactions. It is known to vary not only among plant species, but also within species among populations. However, there is a big gap in our knowledge of whether such variability is the result of divergent selective pressures exerted by a variable pollinator climate or alternative scenarios (e.g., genetic drift). Cypripedium calceolus is a Eurasian deceptive lady’s-slipper orchid pollinated by bees. It is found from near sea level to altitudes of 2500 m. We asked whether pollinator climate and floral scents vary in a concerted manner among different altitudes. Floral scents of four populations in the Limestone Alps were collected by dynamic headspace and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Flower visitors and pollinators (the subset of visitors with pollen loads) were collected and identified. Preliminary coupled gas chromatographic and electroantennographic measurements with floral scents and pollinators revealed biologically active components. More than 70 compounds were detected in the scent samples, mainly aliphatics, terpenoids, and aromatics. Although several compounds were found in all samples, and all samples were dominated by linalool and octyl acetate, scents differed among populations. Similarly, there were strong differences in flower visitor spectra among populations with most abundant flower visitors being bees and syrphid flies at low and high altitudes, respectively. Pollinator climate differed also among populations; however, independent of altitude, most pollinators were bees of Lasioglossum, Andrena, and Nomada. Only few syrphids acted as pollinators and this is the first record of flies as pollinators in C. calceolus. The electrophysiological tests showed that bees and syrphid flies sensed many of the compounds released by the flowers, among them linalool and octyl acetate. Overall, we found that both floral scent and visitor/pollinator climate differ among populations. A series of 20 cases of pleomorphic adenoma and 19 cases of adenoid-cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands, and one case in the mammary location, were investigated regarding immunohistochemical reactivity for Tissue Polypeptide Antigen (TPA), Pre-Keratins, Vimentin, S-100 Protein, and their arrangement pattern of fibronectin. Putative dual action compounds (DACs 3a–d) based on azabicyclo[5.3.0]decane (ABD) Smac mimetic scaffolds linked to Zn2+-chelating 2,2′-dipicolylamine (DPA) through their 4 position are reported and characterized. Their synthesis, their target affinity (cIAP1 BIR3, Zn2+) in cell-free assays, their pro-apoptotic effects, and their cytotoxicity in tumor cells with varying sensitivity to Smac mimetics are described. A limited influence of Zn2+ chelation on in vitro activity of DPA-substituted DACs 3a–d was sometimes perceivable, but did not lead to strong cellular synergistic effects. In particular, the linker connecting DPA with the ABD scaffold seems to influence cellular Zn2+-chelation, with longer lipophilic linkers/DAC 3c being the optimal choice. 相似文献

Ten patients with inverted duplication of 8p (inv dup 8p) were studied with cytogenetic, biochemical and molecular techniques. The duplication for the region 8p12-p22 was always associated with a deletion of the locus D8S7 (mapped in 8p23.1) as demonstrated with the probe pSW50 by both in situ hybridization and Southern blot. Restriction fragment length polymorphisms detected by probes pSW50 (1 case) and by pG2LPL35 (locus LPL) (two cases) were informative as to a maternal origin of the anomaly. The activity of glutathione reductase, whose gene maps in the duplicated region at 8p21.1, was increased in all patients. The recognizable phenotype of inv dup 8p includes neonatal hypotonia, prominent forehead, large mouth with everted lower lip, abnormally shaped large ears, brain malformations and severe mental retardation. Our findings indicate that the chromosome rearrangement is homogeneous at least for the presence of the deletion and support the hypothesis of a common mechanism of origin. 相似文献

Abstract The multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was applied for the detection of the Chlamydia trachomatis chromosome and plasmid. The multiplex PCR demonstrated a sensitivity of 0.8 fg of chlamydial DNA, corresponding to the detection of about 5 copies of the plasmid. Analysis of 195 genital specimens collected randomly from a female population, showed that the multiplex PCR is more sensitive and rapid than culturing for detecting Chlamydia trachomatis . Moreover, sequencing of the II variable domain of the ompl gene, directly from DNA of the clinical specimens, appears to be a simple and rapid method for determining serovar isolates. 相似文献
