Territoriality carries costs and benefits, which are commonly affected by the spatial and temporal abundance and predictability of food, and by intruder pressure. Giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) live in groups that defend territories along river channels during the dry season using chemical signals, loud vocalizations and agonistic encounters. However, little is known about the territoriality of giant otters during the rainy season, when groups leave their dry season territories and follow fish dispersing into flooded areas. The objective of this study was to analyze long-term territoriality of giant otter groups in a seasonal environment. The linear extensions of the territories of 10 giant otter groups were determined based on locations of active dens, latrines and scent marks in each season. Some groups overlapped the limits of neighboring territories. The total territory extent of giant otters was correlated with group size in both seasons. The extent of exclusive territories of giant otter groups was negatively related to the number of adults present in adjacent groups. Territory fidelity ranged from 0 to 100% between seasons. Some groups maintained their territory for long periods, which demanded constant effort in marking and re-establishing their territories during the wet season. These results indicate that the defense capacity of groups had an important role in the maintenance of giant otter territories across seasons, which may also affect the reproductive success of alpha pairs. 相似文献

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a leading cause of dementia in the elderly and is characterized by amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and neuronal dysfunction. Early onset AD (EOAD) is commonly caused by mutations in amyloid precursor protein (APP) or genes involved in the processing of APP including the presenilins (e.g. PSEN1 or PSEN2). In general, mouse models relevant to EOAD recapitulate amyloidosis, show only limited amounts of NFTs and neuronal cell dysfunction and low but significant levels of seizure susceptibility. To investigate the effect of genetic background on these phenotypes, we generated APPswe and PSEN1de9 transgenic mice on the seizure prone inbred strain background, DBA/2J. Previous studies show that the DBA/2J genetic background modifies plaque deposition in the presence of mutant APP but the impact of PSEN1de9 has not been tested. Our study shows that DBA/2J.APPswePSEN1de9 mice are significantly more prone to premature lethality, likely to due to lethal seizures, compared to B6.APPswePSEN1de9 mice—70% of DBA/2J.APPswePSEN1de9 mice die between 2-3 months of age. Of the DBA/2J.APPswePSEN1de9 mice that survived to 6 months of age, plaque deposition was greatly reduced compared to age-matched B6.APPswePSEN1de9 mice. Several studies have now documented menstrual synchrony in human females. There is a broad consensus that the phenomenon mainly
occurs in women who spend a significant amount of time together, such as close friends and coworkers, and that social contact
rather than a similar environment plays an important role in mediating the effect. However, the mechanisms involved and the
adaptive function of menstrual synchrony are not understood. There is some evidence that olfactory cues between females might
underlie the effect. More research is needed before the precise mechanisms that regulate menstrual synchrony are elucidated.
Cynthia Graham received her MSc in clinical psychology from Glasgow University and her PhD from McGill University. Her previous
research has involved menstrual synchrony and the effects of oral contraceptives on premenstrual changes. Currently she is

Geographic patterns of genetic variation within modern populations, produced by complex histories of migration, can be difficult to infer and visually summarize. A general consequence of geographically limited dispersal is that samples from nearby locations tend to be more closely related than samples from distant locations, and so genetic covariance often recapitulates geographic proximity. We use genome-wide polymorphism data to build “geogenetic maps,” which, when applied to stationary populations, produces a map of the geographic positions of the populations, but with distances distorted to reflect historical rates of gene flow. In the underlying model, allele frequency covariance is a decreasing function of geogenetic distance, and nonlocal gene flow such as admixture can be identified as anomalously strong covariance over long distances. This admixture is explicitly co-estimated and depicted as arrows, from the source of admixture to the recipient, on the geogenetic map. We demonstrate the utility of this method on a circum-Tibetan sampling of the greenish warbler (Phylloscopus trochiloides), in which we find evidence for gene flow between the adjacent, terminal populations of the ring species. We also analyze a global sampling of human populations, for which we largely recover the geography of the sampling, with support for significant histories of admixture in many samples. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is organized in part by adapter proteins that nucleate the formation of large protein complexes. Tetratricopeptide repeats (TPR) are well studied protein structural motifs that support intermolecular protein-protein interactions. TMTC1 and TMTC2 were identified by an in silico search as TPR-containing proteins possessing N-terminal ER targeting signal sequences and multiple hydrophobic segments, suggestive of polytopic membrane proteins that are targeted to the secretory pathway. A variety of cell biological and biochemical assays was employed to demonstrate that TMTC1 and TMTC2 are both ER resident integral membrane proteins with multiple clusters of TPR domains oriented within the ER lumen. Proteomic analysis followed by co-immunoprecipitation verification found that both proteins associated with the ER calcium uptake pump SERCA2B, and TMTC2 also bound to the carbohydrate-binding chaperone calnexin. Live cell calcium measurements revealed that overexpression of either TMTC1 or TMTC2 caused a reduction of calcium released from the ER following stimulation, whereas the knockdown of TMTC1 or TMTC2 increased the stimulated calcium released. Together, these results implicate TMTC1 and TMTC2 as ER proteins involved in ER calcium homeostasis. 相似文献

Osteoblast-like cells possess Na-dependent transporters which accumulate orthophosphate (Pi) from the extracellular medium. This may be important in bone formation. Here we describe parallel measurements of Pi uptake and cellular [Pi] in such cells from the rat (UMR 106–01 and UMR 106–06) and human (OB), and in non-osteoblastic human fibroblasts (Detroit 532 (DET)). In UMR 106–01, cellular [Pi] was weakly dependent on extracellular [Pi] and higher than expected from passive transport alone. [32Pi]-uptake was inhibited by Na deprivation, but paradoxically increased on K deprivation. With Na, 87 per cent of cellular 32P was found in organic phosphorus pools after only 5 min. Na deprivation also decreased cellular [Pi], in both UMR 106–01 and DET, but the decrease was smaller than that in [32Pi]-uptake. Ouabain decreased [32Pi]-uptake and cellular [Pi] in DET, but not in UMR 106–01. Regulation of cellular [Pi] is therefore at least partly dependent on Na/Pi co-transport, but this does not seem to be an exclusive property of osteoblasts. 相似文献
