Species allocated to the digenean genera Enenterum Linton, 1910 ; Jeancadenatia Dollfus, 1946 ; Cadenatella Dollfus, 1946 ; and Koseiria form a clade within the Lepocreadiidae whose sister group is a clade comprising Neoallolepidapedon Yamaguti, 1965, Callogonotrema , Oshmarin, 1965, Allolepidapedon Yamaguti, 1940, and Bulbocirrus Oshmarin, 1965. Phylogenetic analysis of the Enenterinae based on comparative morphology, produced one most parsimonious tree with a consistency index of 0.72. Cadenatella is paraphyletic. Only 15.3% of character changes are evolutionary losses, supporting earlier reports that parasitic platyhelminths have experienced little secondary simplification during their evolutionary history. The Enenterinae appears to have originated in the Pacific Ocean, becoming associated with kyphosid fishes as a result of an ancient host switch. Subsequent evolutionary diversification reflects widespread geographical dispersal, consistent with the natural history of kyphosids. 相似文献

Nearly 1.3 million total joint replacement procedures are performed in the United States annually, with numbers projected to rise exponentially in the coming decades. Although finite infection rates for these procedures remain consistently low, device-related infections represent a significant cause of implant failure, requiring secondary or revision procedures. Revision procedures manifest several-fold higher infection recurrence rates. Importantly, many revision surgeries, infected or not, require bone void fillers to support the host bone and provide a sufficient tissue bed for new hardware placement. Antibiotic-eluting bone void fillers (ABVF), providing both osteoconductive and antimicrobial properties, represent one approach for reducing rates of orthopedic device-related infections. Using a solvent-free, molten-cast process, a polymer-controlled antibiotic-eluting calcium carbonate hydroxyapatite (HAP) ceramic composite BVF (ABVF) was fabricated, characterized, and evaluated in vivo using a bacterial challenge in a rabbit radial defect window model. ABVF loaded with tobramycin eliminated the infectious burden in rabbits challenged with a clinically relevant strain of Staphylococcus aureus (inoculum as high as 107 CFU). Histological, microbiological, and radiographic methods were used to detail the effects of ABVF on microbial challenge to host bone after 8 weeks in vivo. In contrast to the HAP/BVF controls, which provided no antibiotic protection and required euthanasia 3 weeks post-operatively, tobramycin-releasing ABVF animals showed no signs of infection (clinical, microbiological, or radiographic) when euthanized at the 8-week study endpoint. ABVF sites did exhibit fibrous encapsulation around the implant at 8 weeks. Local antibiotic release from ABVF to orthopedic sites requiring bone void fillers eliminated the periprosthetic bacterial challenge in this 8-week in vivo study, confirming previous in vitro results. 相似文献

White-nose syndrome (WNS) was first reported in a hibernating bat population in central New York State in February 2006. Since
2006, WNS has been reported from bat hibernacula across much of eastern United States and adjacent Canada and has been associated
with a dramatic decline in the populations of hibernating bats in the northeastern U.S. We are only beginning to discover
how these declines are manifest in changes in summer bat abundance and activity at local scales. A 3-year (2004–2006) acoustic
survey showed that the forested watershed of the Quabbin Reservoir in central Massachusetts supported an abundant and species-rich
summer bat community. In 2010, 4-years following the initial occurrence of WNS, a re-survey of the same habitats and sites
found a 72% reduction in bat activity on the watershed. This is the identical rate of decline reported from cave hibernacula
surveys (73%). This decline in summer activity levels is most likely a consequence of WNS-caused mortality. The impacts of
population losses of this magnitude of a once widespread and abundant taxa are unknown but are presumed to be ecologically

Abstract Microorganisms capable of aerobic respiration on ferrous ions are spread throughout eubacterial and archaebacterial phyla. Phylogenetically distinct organisms were shown to express spectrally distinct redox‐active biomolecules during autotrophic growth on soluble iron. A new iron‐oxidizing eubacterium, designated as strain Funis, was investigated. Strain Funis was judged to be different from other known iron‐oxidizing bacteria on the bases of comparative lipid analyses, 16S rRNA sequence analyses, and cytochrome composition studies. When grown autotrophically on ferrous ions, Funis produced conspicuous levels of a novel acid‐stable, acid‐soluble yellow cytochrome with a distinctive absorbance peak at 579 nm in the reduced state. Stopped‐flow spectrophotometric kinetic studies were conducted on respiratory chain components isolated from cell‐free extracts of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Experimental results were consistent with a model where the primary oxidant of ferrous ions is a highly aggregated c‐type cytochrome that then reduces the periplasmic rusticyanin. The Fe(II)‐dependent, cytochrome c‐catalyzed reduction of the rusticyanin possessed three kinetic properties in common with corresponding intact cells that respire on iron: the same anion specificity, a similar dependence of the rate on the concentration of ferrous ions, and similar rates at saturating concentrations of ferrous ions 相似文献

The quality of milk products is threatened by the formation of biofilms of thermophilicstreptococci on the internal surfaces of plate heat exchangers used in milk processing. Althoughattachment to stainless steel surfaces is one of the first stages in the development of a biofilm, themechanisms involved in attachment have not been reported. The cell surface properties of 12strains of thermophilic streptococci were examined to determine their importance in attachment tostainless steel surfaces. Hydrophobicity, extracellular polysaccharide production and cell surfacecharge varied between the different strains but could not be related to numbers attaching. Treatingthe cells with sodium metaperiodate, lysozyme or trichloroacetic acid to disrupt cell surfacepolysaccharide had no effect on attachment. Treatment with trypsin or sodium dodecyl sulphate toremove cell surface proteins resulted in a 100-fold reduction in the number of bacteria attaching.This result suggests that the surface proteins of the thermophilic streptococci are important intheir attachment to stainless steel. 相似文献
