The Simple View of Reading (SVR) in Chinese was examined in a genetically sensitive design. A total of 270 pairs of Chinese twins (190 pairs of monozygotic twins and 80 pairs of same-sex dizygotic twins) were tested on Chinese vocabulary and word reading at the mean age 7.8 years and reading comprehension of sentences and passages one year later. Results of behavior-genetic analyses showed that both vocabulary and word reading had significant independent genetic influences on reading comprehension, and the two factors together accounted for most but not all of the genetic influences on reading comprehension. In addition, sentence comprehension had a stronger genetic correlation with word reading while passage comprehension showed a trend of stronger genetic overlap with vocabulary. These findings suggest that the genetic foundation of the SVR in Chinese is largely supported in that language comprehension and decoding are two core skills for reading comprehension in nonalphabetic as well as alphabetic written languages.  相似文献

Therapeutic administration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) by systemic delivery utilizes the innate ability of the cells to home to damaged tissues, but it can be an inefficient process due to a limited knowledge of cellular cues that regulate migration and homing. Our lab recently discovered that a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), inhibits MSC migration. Because MIF may act on multiple cellular targets, an activating antibody (CD74Ab) was employed in this study to examine the effect of one MIF receptor, CD74 (major histocompatibility complex class II-associated invariant chain), on MSC motility. CD74 activation inhibits in a dose-dependent manner up to 90% of in vitro migration of MSCs at 40 μg/ml CD74Ab (p?<?0.001), with consistent effects observed among three MSC donor preparations. A blocking peptide from the C-terminus of CD74 eliminates the effect of CD74Ab on MSCs. This suggests that MIF may act on MSCs, at least in part, through CD74. Late-passage MSCs exhibit less chemokinesis than those at passage 2. However, MSCs remain responsive to CD74 activation during ex vivo expansion: MSC migration is inhibited ~2-fold in the presence of 5 µg/ml CD74Ab at passage 9 vs. ~3-fold at passage 2 (p?<?0.001). Consistent with this result, there were no significant differences in CD74 expression at all tested passages or after CD74Ab exposure. Targeting CD74 to regulate migration and homing potentially may be a useful strategy to improve the efficacy of a variety of MSC therapies, including those that require ex vivo expansion.  相似文献

Abstract: Cyclic GMP (cGMP) is a molecular messenger involved in diverse cellular processes. Recently, cGMP-dependent protein kinase (cGK) type II was determined to be a regulator of endochondral ossification and bone growth, identifying a role for cGMP in the regulation of cellular proliferation. Here, we demonstrate the presence of cGK type I (cGKI) in cells of the developing trigeminal ganglia. cGKI occurs in some proliferating precursors as evidenced by double labeling with an antibody to cGKI and 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine(BrdU) incorporation. Inhibition of cGKI with KT5823 or Rp -8-(4-chlorophenylthio)-guanosine-3',5'-cyclic monophosphorothioate ( Rp -8-pCPT-cGMPS) in chick embryos results in a 30–40% decrease in trigeminal ganglia cell number, and this effect is independent of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). In addition, inhibition of cGKI with Rp -8-pCPT-cGMPS results in a 60% decrease in BrdU incorporation in the trigeminal ganglia of embryonic day 5 chicks. We find that PC12 cells expressing cGKI proliferate more rapidly and incorporate more BrdU than do control cells. The cGKI inhibitor Rp -8-pCPT-cGMPS decreases proliferation and BrdU incorporation in transfected PC12 cells but has no effect on control cells. The PC12 cells do not express NOS, indicating that this effect is also independent of NOS. Thus, cGKI regulates the proliferation of sensory neurons as a result of activation of a NOS-independent pathway, representing a novel pathway by which the number of sensory neurons is regulated.  相似文献

Rapid climate changes are currently driving substantial reorganizations of marine ecosystems around the world. A key question is how these changes will alter the provision of ecosystem services from the ocean, particularly from fisheries. To answer this question, we need to understand not only the ecological dynamics of marine systems, but also human adaptation and feedbacks between humans and the rest of the natural world. In this review, we outline what we have learned from research primarily in continental shelf ecosystems and fishing communities of North America. Key findings are that marine animals are highly sensitive to warming and are responding quickly to changes in water temperature, and that such changes are often happening faster than similar processes on land. Changes in species distributions and productivity are having substantial impacts on fisheries, including through changing catch compositions and longer distances traveled for fishing trips. Conflicts over access to fisheries have also emerged as species distributions are no longer aligned with regulations or catch allocations. These changes in the coupled natural-human system have reduced the value of ecosystem services from some fisheries and risk doing so even more in the future. Going forward, substantial opportunities for more effective fisheries management and operations, marine conservation, and marine spatial planning are likely possible through greater consideration of climate information over time-scales from years to decades.  相似文献

Amplified expression of the endogenous retrotransposons, intracisternal A particles (IAPs) and murine leukemia virus-related elements (MLVEs), along with decreased expression of VL30 elements frequently occurs during mouse mammary tumorigenesis. We have now analyzed the expression of these retroelements during the normal developmental and differentiation cycle of the mammary gland as found in virgin, pregnant, lactating, and post-lactation adult female BALB/c mice. Retrotransposon expression was either unchanged or decreased during the progressive stages of the cycle compared to virgin tissue. Likewise, growth of mammary epithelial cells in primary culture had little or no effect on expression of IAPs, MLVEs and VL30 sequences. Thus, the dramatic changes involving these retrotransposons in many mouse mammary tumors appear unrelated to any normal state.  相似文献
