Listronotus oregonensis (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) oviposits in carrot leaves and the larvae feed in carrot roots. Its eggs are parasitized by Anaphes sordidatus (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) throughout its oviposition period. This parasitoid is the major biotic mortality factor for L. oregonensis. Parasitism by A. sordidatus was studied for three years in sequentially sown plots of carrots, Daucus carota var. sativa. Over the scason, significantly fewer L. oregonensis eggs were oviposited in later sown carrots than in earlier sown carrots because oviposition started later in late sown plots of carrots. A positive temporal density-dependent relationship was observed each year between parasitism rates and host densities. This positive density dependence occurred in early and mid-summer for earlysown carrots where host density reached 1–2 host eggs per plant but disappeared in late summer when host density decreased while parasitism remained high. Latesown carrots had low host egg density (0.2 host egg per plant) and contributed little to the total number of eggs. In these late sown plots, parasitism increased rapidly to over 80% but no density dependence was observed. Spatially, few statistically significant regressions were found but all indicated a positive spatial density-dependence. Summary The erythrocytic and liver pyruvate kinases (PK) from a patient with congenital nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia have been studied. In red blood cells, the residual activity, 28% of the normal control, presented normal kinetic properties, instability to heat and urea, and slow electrophoretic mobility. The L-type PK from the patient's liver was characterized by normal activity, kinetic properties, stability to heat and urea, and electrophoretic mobility. The fact that erythrocyte mutant PK may, as in previous reports, or may not be associated, as in the present observation, with molecular abnormalities of the liver PK provides support for the hypothesis of a gene rearrangement compatible with two different tissue-specific mRNAs. 相似文献

The cytotoxin-associated gene (Cag) pathogenicity island is a strain-specific
constituent of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) that
augments cancer risk. CagA translocates into the cytoplasm where it stimulates cell
signaling through the interaction with tyrosine kinase c-Met receptor, leading
cellular proliferation. Identified as a potential gastric stem cell marker,
cluster-of-differentiation (CD) CD44 also acts as a co-receptor for c-Met, but
whether it plays a functional role in H. pylori-induced epithelial
proliferation is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that CD44 plays a functional role
in H. pylori-induced epithelial cell proliferation. To assay changes
in gastric epithelial cell proliferation in relation to the direct interaction with
H. pylori, human- and mouse-derived gastric organoids were
infected with the G27 H. pylori strain or a mutant G27 strain
bearing cagA deletion (∆CagA::cat). Epithelial proliferation
was quantified by EdU immunostaining. Phosphorylation of c-Met was analyzed by
immunoprecipitation followed by Western blot analysis for expression of CD44 and
CagA. H. pylori infection of both mouse- and human-derived gastric
organoids induced epithelial proliferation that correlated with c-Met
phosphorylation. CagA and CD44 co-immunoprecipitated with phosphorylated c-Met. The
formation of this complex did not occur in organoids infected with
∆CagA::cat. Epithelial proliferation in response to
H. pylori infection was lost in infected organoids derived from
CD44-deficient mouse stomachs. Human-derived fundic gastric organoids exhibited an
induction in proliferation when infected with H. pylorithat was not
seen in organoids pre-treated with a peptide inhibitor specific to CD44. In the
well-established Mongolian gerbil model of gastric cancer, animals treated with CD44
peptide inhibitor Pep1, resulted in the inhibition of H.
pylori-induced proliferation and associated atrophic gastritis. The current
study reports a unique approach to study H. pylori interaction with
the human gastric epithelium. Here, we show that CD44 plays a functional role in

Morphologically typical uterine cervical biopsies were separated into normal cervices, condylomas and cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CIN) grades I, II and III. At least 100 nuclei per lesion were measured on 4 micron Feulgen-stained sections using a Zeiss microspectrophotometer, with a variant of the plug method used to compute the nuclear DNA content. DNA distribution histograms were then decomposed into subsets of diploid, tetraploid, octoploid and aneuploid cells. The decomposition, which assumed a log-normal model of polydiploidy distribution, led to the identification of six indices: (1) the percentage of diploid cells, (2) the percentage of tetraploid cells, (3) the percentage of octoploid cells, (4) the percentage of aneuploid cells with DNA contents less than tetraploidy, (5) the percentage of aneuploid cells with DNA contents between tetraploidy and octaploidy and (6) the percentage of aneuploid cells with DNA contents greater than octoploidy. These indices, along with the mean nuclear radius, the 5c exceeding rate and the 2c deviation index, generated a nine-dimensional space. Two methods of discriminant analysis on this space showed discriminating powers of 78.22% and 87.13%, respectively, as compared to the original diagnoses. Phosphofructokinase (PFK) isozymes of blood cells and some human tissues were studied by starch gel electrophoresis and immunoprecipitation by anti-muscle and anti-erythrocyte PFK sera. PFK from muscle, heart, brain and placenta were totally precipitated by both antisera. PFK from blood cells (erythrocytes, lymphocytes, granulocytes, platelets) were precipitated more strongly by anti-erythrocyte PFK serum than by anti-muscle PFK serum. Liver, kidney and monoblast PFK were slightly precipitated by both antisera. From the electrophoretic patterns and the immunoprecipitation curves we may conclude that muscle contains the homotetrameric M4 forms; platelet, liver and kidney the homotetrameric E4 form, and blood cells the M-E hybrids. Monoblasts probably contain a E4 type PFK precursor, and heart, placenta and brain, a modified M4 type PFK. Background
Infection with severe malaria in African children is associated with not only a high mortality but also a high risk of cognitive deficits. There is evidence that interventions done a few years after the illness are effective but nothing is known about those done immediately after the illness. Can Wide Consultation Help with Setting Priorities for Large-Scale Biodiversity Monitoring Programs?
Climate and other global change phenomena affecting biodiversity require monitoring to track ecosystem changes and guide policy and management actions. Designing a biodiversity monitoring program is a difficult task that requires making decisions that often lack consensus due to budgetary constrains. As monitoring programs require long-term investment, they also require strong and continuing support from all interested parties. As such, stakeholder consultation is key to identify priorities and make sound design decisions that have as much support as possible. Here, we present the results of a consultation conducted to serve as an aid for designing a large-scale biodiversity monitoring program for the province of Québec (Canada). The consultation took the form of a survey with 13 discrete choices involving tradeoffs in respect to design priorities and 10 demographic questions (e.g., age, profession). The survey was sent to thousands of individuals having expected interests and knowledge about biodiversity and was completed by 621 participants. Overall, consensuses were few and it appeared difficult to create a design fulfilling the priorities of the majority. Most participants wanted 1) a monitoring design covering the entire territory and focusing on natural habitats; 2) a focus on species related to ecosystem services, on threatened and on invasive species. The only demographic characteristic that was related to the type of prioritization was the declared level of knowledge in biodiversity (null to high), but even then the influence was quite small. 相似文献
