Habitat fragmentation and invasive species often contribute to the decline of native taxa. Since the penetration of non‐native species into natural habitat may be facilitated by habitat fragmentation, it is important to examine how these two factors interact. Previous research documented that, in contrast to most other arthropod taxa, spiders increased in density and morphospecies richness with decreasing fragment area and increasing fragment age (time since insularization) in urban habitat fragments in San Diego County, California, USA. We tested whether a specific mechanism, an increase in non‐native species with fragmentation, is responsible for this pattern. We found that both native and non‐native taxa contributed to the pattern. Abundance of native spiders per pitfall trap sample increased significantly with decreasing fragment size (i.e. a negative density–area relationship) and abundance of non‐natives increased significantly with increasing fragment age. The proportion of non‐native individuals also increased significantly with age. One non‐native species, Oecobius navus, comprised the majority of non‐native individuals (82.2%) and a significant proportion of total individuals (25.1%). Richness of spider families per sample (family density) increased with fragment age due to an increase in the occurrence of non‐natives in older fragments, however, native family richness did not vary with age or area. Due to increasing dominance by non‐native and some native families, family evenness declined with decreasing fragment size and increasing fragment age. Native and non‐native abundance covaried positively arguing against strong negative interactions between the two groups. O. navus had a strong positive association with another common non‐native arthropod, the Argentine ant (Linepitheme humile), suggesting a possible direct interaction. In contrast, abundance of native spiders was negatively correlated with Argentine ant abundance. Mutants of Escherichia coli with altered resistance to low molecular weight organic solvents were isolated. Solvent-resistant mutants showed a decrease in the ratio of phosphatidylethanolamine to the anionic phospholipids (phosphatidylglycerol and cardiolipin) relative to the wild-type, whereas solvent-sensitive strains showed an increase. Reversion studies on representative mutants demonstrated that the phenotypic response to solvents and the changes in phospholipid composition were genetically associated. The fatty acid and lipopolysaccharide compositions of the various mutants showed no significant differences from the parental strain. The lesions in two of the solvent-sensitive mutants (DC7 and DC9) and one of the resistant mutants (DC11) were mapped by cotransduction with phage P1 and shown to lie very close to the pss locus at 56 min on the Escherichia coli map. 相似文献

Preferential repair of N-acetoxy-acetylaminofluorene lesions in the nuclease-hypersensitive region of simian virus 40 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We exposed simian virus 40-infected CV-1 monkey cells to the carcinogen N-acetoxy-acetylaminofluorene and monitored the removal of lesions from cellular DNA and from various regions of viral DNA. Exposure to 5.5 microM 3H-labeled carcinogen produced 20-80 adducts per 10(6) bases in cellular DNA in different experiments. The initial adduct concentration in viral DNA was always approximately half that in cellular DNA. At various times after treatment, cellular and viral DNA, and restriction fragments of viral DNA, were purified and examined for adduct density. Independent of the initial adduct concentration three rates of repair were observed. Cellular DNA was repaired at the lowest rate. Viral DNA was repaired about 50% more rapidly than was cellular DNA isolated from the same carcinogen-treated monolayers. Within the viral DNA a 366-base pair region containing the major nuclease-hypersensitive site was repaired at twice the rate of the rest of the viral genome. This region contains regulatory sequences that govern the initiation of DNA replication and viral gene expression. As reported previously this region was initially modified 1.71 +/- 0.20-fold higher than expected from its guanine content. Selective repair diminished the extent of hypermodification of this region by 6.0 +/- 2.1% per hour, partly compensating for the higher initial level of adducts. 相似文献

Fifty-two patients with generalized Hodgkin''s disease were treated with a combination of mustine hydrochloride, vinblastine, procarbazine, and prednisolone. Complete remissions were obtained initially in six out of seven patients (86%) who had previously received no treatment, in 15 out of 19 (79%) who had had only radiotherapy in the past, and in 9 out of 26 (35%) who had previously been given chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy. Of these 30 patients in whom a complete remission was obtained 22 have been free of any symptoms or signs of disease for periods ranging from 4 to 22 months. The response to treatment was rapid, and toxicity was not a major problem, except in those who had previously been treated with cytotoxic drugs used continuously and not in courses. A comparative trial of radiotherapy and combination therapy in the treatment of Stage III Hodgkin''s disease is strongly recommended. 相似文献
