Concomitant immunity (CI) against macroparasites describes a state of effective anti-larval immunity coupled with persistent adult infection. Experimental studies indicate that immunologically concealed adult worms might promote anti-larval immunity via the release of cross-reactive antigens, thus creating a barrier against continual infection and restricting burden size within the host. CI offers an important potential benefit to established worms by preventing overcrowding within the host. Thus, CI may be interpreted as akin to vaccination; relatively long-lived adult worms 'vaccinate' their host with larval surface antigens and so benefit from reduced conspecific competition. The shared responsibility for host vaccination among adult worms leads to a problem of collective action. Here, we build on earlier analytical findings about the evolutionary forces that shape cooperation among parasites in order to produce a stochastic simulation model of macroparasite social evolution. First, we theoretically investigate a parasite adaptation hypothesis of CI and demonstrate its plausibility under defined conditions, despite the possibility of evolutionary 'cheats'. Then we derive a set of predictions for testing the hypothesis that CI is partly a host-manipulative parasite adaptation. Evidence in support of this model would present an unusual case of adaptive population regulation. 相似文献

Health outcomes following infection with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are remarkably variable. The way the virus spreads inside hosts, and how this spread interacts with host immunity and physiology, is likely to determine variation in health outcomes. Decades of data and dynamical analyses of how other viruses spread and interact with host cells could shed light on SARS-CoV-2 within-host trajectories. We review how common axes of variation in within-host dynamics and emergent pathology (such as age and sex) might be combined with ecological principles to understand the case of SARS-CoV-2. We highlight pitfalls in application of existing theoretical frameworks relevant to the complexity of the within-host context and frame the discussion in terms of growing knowledge of the biology of SARS-CoV-2. Viewing health outcomes for SARS-CoV-2 through the lens of ecological models underscores the value of repeated measures on individuals, especially since many lines of evidence suggest important contingence on trajectory. 相似文献

We investigate the combination of environmental factors that influence the distribution patterns of benthic foraminiferal tests (> 63 μm) in a topographically varied region crossed by both the Subtropical and Subantarctic Fronts, south-east of New Zealand. Seafloor sample sites, extending from outer shelf (50 m) to abyssal (5000 m) depths, are bathed by five different water masses, and receive phytodetritus from Subtropical, Subantarctic and Circumpolar surface water masses. Eight mappable associations are recognised by Q-mode cluster analysis of the benthic foraminiferal census data. Similar associations are identified using cluster analysis based solely on the presence or absence of species. Canonical correspondence analysis and a correlation coefficient matrix were used to relate the faunal data to a set of environmental proxies. These show that factors related to water depth (especially decreasing food supply with increasing depth) are the most significant in determining the overall foraminiferal distribution. Other contributing factors include surface water productivity and its seasonality; bottom water ventilation; energetic state of the benthic boundary layer and resulting substrate texture; and bottom water carbonate corrosiveness. Three shallow-water associations (50–700 m), dominated by Cassidulina carinata, Trifarina angulosa, Globocassidulina canalisuturata, Gavelinopsis praegeri, and Bolivina robusta, occur in coarse substrates on the continental shelf, and on the crests and upper slopes of four seamounts under well-oxygenated, high energy regimes, and high food input. Three mid bathyal to upper abyssal associations (500–3300 m), dominated by Alabaminella weddellensis, C. carinata, and Epistominella exigua, occur in biopelagic sandy mud, beneath a region of strongly seasonal food supply, with their composition influenced by total food flux, ventilation (Oxygen Minimum Zone), and bottom current strength. An unusual lower bathyal association (1200–2100 m), dominated by T. angulosa and Ehrenbergina glabra, occurs in a belt of coarser sandy substrate that runs along the crest of the submarine plateaux slopes beneath the strongly-flowing Subantarctic Front-related currents. A deep abyssal association (3500–5000 m), dominated by Nuttallides umbonifer and Globocassidulina subglobosa, occurs on the abyssal plain beneath oligotrophic lower Circumpolar Water south-east of the Subantarctic Front and is strongly influenced by the cold, carbonate-corrosive conditions. 相似文献

Host-range shifts in influenza virus are a major risk factor for pandemics. A key question in the study of emerging zoonoses is how the evolution of transmission efficiency interacts with heterogeneity in contact patterns in the new host species, as this interplay influences disease dynamics and prospects for control. Here we use a synergistic mixture of models and data to tease apart the evolutionary and demographic processes controlling a host-range shift in equine H3N8-derived canine influenza virus (CIV). CIV has experienced 15 years of continuous transfer among dogs in the United States, but maintains a patchy distribution, characterized by sporadic short-lived outbreaks coupled with endemic hotspots in large animal shelters. We show that CIV has a high reproductive potential in these facilities (mean R0 = 3.9) and that these hotspots act as refugia from the sparsely connected majority of the dog population. Intriguingly, CIV has evolved a transmission efficiency that closely matches the minimum required to persist in these refugia, leaving it poised on the extinction/invasion threshold of the host contact network. Corresponding phylogenetic analyses show strong geographic clustering in three US regions, and that the effective reproductive number of the virus (Re) in the general dog population is close to 1.0. Our results highlight the critical role of host contact structure in CIV dynamics, and show how host contact networks could shape the evolution of pathogen transmission efficiency. Importantly, efficient control measures could eradicate the virus, in turn minimizing the risk of future sustained transmission among companion dogs that could represent a potential new axis to the human-animal interface for influenza. 相似文献

In this work, two synthetic aurones revealed moderate schistosomicidal potential in in vitro and in vivo assays. Aurones ( 1 ) and ( 2 ) promoted changes in tegument integrity and motor activity, leading to death of adult Schistosoma mansoni worms in in vitro assays. When administered orally (two doses of 50 mg/kg) in experimentally infected animals, synthetic aurones ( 1 ) and ( 2 ) promoted reductions of 56.20 % and 57.61 % of the parasite load and stimulated the displacement towards the liver of the remaining adult worms. The oogram analysis revealed that the treatment with both aurones interferes with the egg development kinetics in the intestinal tissue. Seeking an action target for compounds ( 1 ) and ( 2 ), the connection with NTPDases enzymes, recognized as important therapeutic targets for S. mansoni, was evaluated. Molecular docking studies have shown promising results. The dataset reveals the anthelmintic character of these compounds, which can be used in the development of new therapies for schistosomiasis. 相似文献
