Three silhouette traps of novel design were used to investigate the trap finding ability of female Austrosimulium bancrofti (Taylor) (Diptera: Simuliidae) in southeast Queensland. The traps were 'upright', 'elongate' or 'square' in shape. Five highly significant factors: hour after sunrise, temperature, relative humidity, trap shape and distance between traps, were included in a model which generated fitted estimates of flies captured under defined conditions. The rate of increase and the level of maximum capture rate indicated that the elongate trap captured the highest numbers of blackflies. An interaction between hour after sunrise and temperature suggests a strong endogenous modification of trap finding activity. Numbers captured increased with increasing distance between traps and decreasing relative humidity. The importance of these results in understanding behaviour of A. bancrofti is discussed.  相似文献

The development of Catananche caerulea pollen grains from theearly free microspore stage to the formation of the male germunit has been studied using the scanning electron microscope.The differentiation of the elaborate ectexine from primexineand the accompanying cytoplasmic changes in the microsporesare described. SUMMARY: Calcium alginate wool swabs were no more efficient or reliable than gauze or absorbent cotton wool swabs when tested on drinking glasses infected with known numbers of bacteria. The number of bacteria left on the glass after swabbing was determined by a modified roll tube method.  相似文献

Comparative studies on the structure of genitalia in Pseudoxychila tarsalis Bates and the copulating behavior in 5 species of Cicindela respectively complement similar findings by Freitag [1] on Cicindela spp. and Palmer [4] on P. tarsalis. These strengthen the hypothesis that in tiger beetles the flagellum fits into the spermatheca duct during copulation; that the main function of the flagellum, which is closed at the apex and not connected to the ejaculatory duct, is to open and prepare the lumen of the spermatheca duct for sperm movement from the bursa copulatrix to the spermatheca; and that copulation proceeds in 3 phases: phase 1 in which the lumen of the spermatheca duct is cleared by the flagellum, phase 2 in which the flagellum is withdrawn from the spermatheca duct, and phase 3 in which semen is transferred from the gonopore of the ejaculatory duct to the bursa copulatrix, usually with a spermatophore.  相似文献
