This study focuses on two competing species, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae), both invasive mosquitoes of the New World. Context-specific competition between immature forms inside containers seems to be an important determinant of the coexistence or displacement of each species in different regions of the world. Here, competition experiments developed at low density (one, two or three larvae) and receiving four different resource food concentration, were designed to test whether Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti respond differently to competition, and whether competition can be attributed to a simple division of resources. Three phenotypic traits - larval development, adult survival under starvation and wing length - were used as indicators of performance. Larvae of neither species were limited by resource concentration when they were alone, unlike when they developed with competitors. The presence of conspecifics affected Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, inducing slower development, reduced survival and wing length. The response to resource limitation was different when developing with heterospecifics: Ae. aegypti developing with one heterospecific showed faster development, producing smaller adults with shorter lives, while in the presence of two competitors, development increased and adults lived longer. Aedes albopictus demonstrated a better performance when developing with heterospecifics, with no loss in their development period and improved adult survival. Overall, our results suggest that response to competition can not simply be attributed to the division of resources, and that larvae of both species presented large phenotypic plasticity in their response to the presence or absence of heterospecifics and conspecifics.  相似文献

An analysis of an experimental procedure used to determine age-related changes in the skin was performed. The experiment is based on the propagation of a shear wave through the skin. The analysis of the experiment was used to determine the effects of parameters such as properties of the skin and subcutaneous fat, skin thickness and experimental conditions on the propagation. Computer simulations showed that at lower frequencies (less than 1000 Hz), measured results depended strongly on skin thickness, while at higher frequencies (2000 Hz) the results were relatively insensitive to both skin thickness and the properties of the subcutaneous fat. Results also depended upon the distance between the applied shear disturbance and the measurement point. The analysis suggests that higher frequency (2000 Hz) experimental results are more indicative of mechanical properties of skin than lower frequency (less than 1000 Hz) results.  相似文献

The 10-subunit RNA exosome is involved in a large number of diverse RNA processing and degradation events in eukaryotes. These reactions are carried out by the single catalytic subunit, Rrp44p/Dis3p, which is composed of three parts that are conserved throughout eukaryotes. The exosome is named for the 3′ to 5′ exoribonuclease activity provided by a large C-terminal region of the Rrp44p subunit that resembles other exoribonucleases. Rrp44p also contains an endoribonuclease domain. Finally, the very N-terminus of Rrp44p contains three Cys residues (CR3 motif) that are conserved in many eukaryotes but have no known function. These three conserved Cys residues cluster with a previously unrecognized conserved His residue in what resembles a metal-ion-binding site. Genetic and biochemical data show that this CR3 motif affects both endo- and exonuclease activity in vivo and both the nuclear and cytoplasmic exosome, as well as the ability of Rrp44p to associate with the other exosome subunits. These data provide the first direct evidence that the exosome-Rrp44p interaction is functionally important and also provides a molecular explanation for the functional defects when the conserved Cys residues are mutated.  相似文献

This study investigated the in vivo effects of a commercial blend of plant extracts (carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde and capsaicin) on serum metabolic parameters closely connected with energy and protein metabolism (glucose; l-lactate; non-esterified fatty acids, NEFA; urea nitrogen, SUN; creatinine; total protein, TSP) and enzymes associated with hepatic function (aspartate-aminotransferase, AST and gamma-glutamyl transferase, GGT) in finishing-stage Belgian Blue bull calves maintained in a commercial feedlot. Monitoring was performed over 86 days in 24 animals randomly allotted to two groups: (1) a control group (CTR, no supplementation; n = 10), and (2) a group receiving dietary supplementation with a commercial blend of plant extracts (PEX, 100 mg/kg DM of concentrate; n = 14). Under the conditions of our study, supplementation with the commercial blend did not give detrimental effects, but the opposite: the decrease in serum l-lactate, NEFA and creatinine levels and the increase in SUN concentrations; suggests an improvement in the energy status and protein turnover of the supplemented animals.  相似文献

Key to effective disinfection byproduct (DBP) management is source water control and management, and more specifically, organic matter (OM) control and management. However, the content and character of OM in source waters is spatially and temporally variable, and the prediction of its composition is challenging. Water treatment companies require adequate analytical techniques for OM characterisation to maintain the operation of the water supply and treatment systems adjusted to constantly changing environmental conditions. There is a requirement, therefore, for an improved understanding of OM composition and character in source water, how that composition and character varies with flow conditions, and how this impacts on drinking water treatment. This paper demonstrates that fluorescence spectroscopy offers a potential alternative to other analytical methods of OM characterisation. The advantages of fluorescence include rapid, sensitive and selective characterisation of OM, no sample pre-treatment, small sample volume, and the potential for on-line monitoring incorporation. Fluorescence can provide useful information on OM reactivity and treatability together with an indication of the OM sources (allochthonous or autochthonous). The paper discusses a body of literature which has identified relationships between fluorescence spectra and OM physico-chemical properties (i.e. degree of hydrophobicity, microbial content), has applied fluorescence spectroscopy to characterise the changes in OM upon disinfection, and has related the fluorescence properties to DBP formation. Further work is required in the robust management of data arising from fluorescence spectroscopy analysis and, in particular, Excitation Emission Matrices. Consideration must be given as to how the data might best be employed to greatest effect on a routine basis at WTW.  相似文献
