Domestic violence (DV) is reported by 40% of married women in India and associated with substantial morbidity. An operational research definition is therefore needed to enhance understanding of DV epidemiology in India and inform DV interventions and measures. To arrive at a culturally-tailored definition, we aimed to better understand how definitions provided by the World Health Organization and the 2005 India Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act match the perceptions of behaviors constituting DV among the Indian community. Between September 2012 and January 2013, 16 key informant interviews with experts in DV and family counseling and 2 gender-concordant focus groups of lay community members were conducted in Pune, India to understand community perceptions of the definition of DV, perpetrators of DV, and examples of DV encountered by married women in Pune, India. Several key themes emerged regarding behaviors and acts constituting DV including 1) the exertion of control over a woman’s reproductive decision-making, mobility, socializing with family and friends, finances, and access to food and nutrition, 2) the widespread acceptance of sexual abuse and the influences of affluence on sexual DV manifestations, 3) the shaping of physical abuse experiences by readily-available tools and the presence of witnesses, 4) psychological abuse for infertility, dowry, and girl-children, and 5) the perpetration of DV by the husband and other members of his family. Findings support the need for a culturally-tailored operational definition that expands on the WHO surveillance definition to inform the development of more effective DV intervention strategies and measures.  相似文献

A tropical marine bacterium isolated from the hard coral, Symphyllia sp. was identified as Serratia marcescens on the basis of morphological, biochemical and 16S rDNA analysis. The bacterium showed antimicrobial activity towards the pathogens Candida albicans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the marine biofouling bacterium Bacillus pumilus. S. marcescens displayed biosurfactant activity as evidenced by drop collapse, blood hemolysis and surface tension reduction (52.0-27 mN m(-1)). The active compound was purified by solvent extraction and silicic acid chromatography. Characterization was by thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and (1)H as well as (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis. The surfactant was found to be a glycolipid composed of glucose and palmitic acid. The glycolipid prevented adhesion of C. albicans BH, P. aeruginosa PAO1 and B. pumilus TiO1. The glycolipid also disrupted preformed biofilms of these cultures in microtitre plates. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and electron microscopy confirmed the effective removal of biofilms from glass surfaces. The glycolipid derived from S. marcescens could thus serve as a potential anti-biofilm agent.  相似文献

The morphogenetic behavior of a tropical marine Yarrowia lipolytica strain on hydrophobic substrates was studied. Media containing coconut oil or palm kernel oil (rich in lauric and myristic acids) prepared in distilled water or seawater at a neutral pH supported 95% of the cells to undergo a transition from the yeast form to the mycelium form. With potassium laurate, 51% of the cells were in the mycelium form, whereas with myristate, 32% were in the mycelium form. However, combinations of these two fatty acids in proportions that are present in coconut oil or palm kernel oil enhanced the mycelium formation to 65%. The culture also produced extracellular lipases during the morphogenetic change. The yeast cells were found to attach to the large droplets of the hydrophobic substrates during the transition, while the mycelia were associated with the aqueous phase. The alkane-grown yeast partitioned more efficiently in the hydrophobic phases when compared with the coconut oil-grown mycelia. A fatty acid analysis of the mycelial form revealed the presence of lauric acid in addition to the long-chain saturated and unsaturated fatty acids observed in the yeast form. The mycelia underwent a rapid transition to the yeast form with n-dodecane, a medium-chain aliphatic hydrocarbon. Thus, the fungus displayed a differential behavior towards the two types of saturated hydrophobic substrates.  相似文献

Yarrowia lipolytica is a fungus that degrades hydrophobic substrates very efficiently. The fungus displays several important characteristics that have encouraged researchers to study various basic biological and biotechnological applications in detail. Although the organism has been used as model system for studying dimorphism, salt tolerance, heterologous protein expression, and lipid accumulation, there are no recent reviews on the environmental and industrial applications of this organism. Included here are applications in bioremediation of environments contaminated with aliphatic and aromatic compounds, organic pollutants, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, and metals. A variety of industrially important recent processes for the synthesis of β-hydroxy butyrate, l-dopa, and emulsifiers have also been reviewed. Production of unique inherent enzymes (inulinases, α-mannosidases), novel applications of esterases and lipases, and the use of the fungus for heterologous expression of biotechnologically relevant products have also been highlighted. The review while entailing a general overview focuses critically on some of the recent advances on the applications of this yeast. The examples cited here demonstrate the use of wild-type, mutant as well as genetically manipulated strains of Y. lipolytica for the development of different products, processes, and technologies. This also throws light on how a single organism can be versatile with respect to its metabolic abilities and how it can be exploited for a variety of purposes. This review will thus form a base for future developments in this field.  相似文献

Single celled eukaryotes utilize autophagy (or self-consumption) to adapt to fluctuating energy sources in the environment. The identification in multicellular organisms of orthologs of autophagy-related yeast genes has led to some of the major advances in the molecular dissection of the pathway in the last decade. In higher eukaryotes, autophagy is much more than a 'stress response' pathway. The complexity of multicellular systems calls for greater sophistication and coordination not only in regulating the stress response but also in sustaining normal physiological functions and a homeostatic environment in the whole organism. The review series on 'Autophagy in Higher Eukaryotes--a matter of survival or death' in the current issue comprises a variety of perspectives on the role of autophagy in cell growth, survival and death, in neurodegeneration, tumor suppression and tumor progression. For example, H?yer-Hansen and J??ttell? cogitate on the emergence of autophagy as a target in cancer therapy. In addition, Sanjuan and Green examine its role in the defense against microbial pathogens and Sachdeva and Thompson offer an intriguing look at autophagy in the context of circadian clocks and diurnal rhythms. The high prevalence of domestic violence (DV) among married women in India and associated negative health repercussions highlight the need for effective prevention strategies and tools to measure the efficacy of such interventions. Literature supporting differing manifestations of DV by culture underscores the need for a culturally-tailored scale to more effectively measure DV in the Indian context. We therefore aimed to develop and validate such a tool, the Indian Family Violence and Control Scale (IFVCS), through a mixed-methods study. The psychometric development of IFVCS is herein discussed. After field pre-testing and expert review, a 63-item questionnaire was administered to a random sample of 630 married women from May-July 2013 in Pune, India. The item response theory approach for binary data to explore the IFVCS structure suggested that IFVCS is reliable, with the majority of items having high (>0.5) and significant factor loadings. Concurrent validity, assessed by comparing responses to IFVCS with the validated, abridged Conflict Tactics Scale-2, was high (r = 0.899, p<0.001) as was the construct validity, demonstrated by its significant association with several established DV correlates. Therefore, initial assessment of the IFVCS psychometric properties suggests that it is an effective tool for measuring DV among married women in India and speaks to its capacity for enhancing understanding of DV epidemiology and for evaluating the effectiveness of future DV interventions.  相似文献

In the dimorphic zygomycetous fungusBenjaminiella poitrasii, the cell wall compositions of mycelial phase (M), yeast phase (Y) and its yeast form mutants (Y-2 and Y-5) were studied. Chitosan was abundant in M-phase (26.6%) whereas lesser amounts were present in Y-phase (17.3%) and in mutants Y-2 (19.6%) or Y-5 (17.3%). Although chitin was present as a smaller fraction of the total glucosaminoglycan in each of different cell wall preparations, it was almost 3 times more prevalent in M-phase than the Y-phase cells. It is well documented across phyla that animals experiencing stress and fear produce chemical warning signals that can lead to behavioral, endocrinological, and immunological changes in the recipient animals of the same species. Humans distinguish between fear and other emotional chemosignals based on olfactory cues. Here, we study the effect of human fear chemosignals on the speed and accuracy of cognitive performance. In a double-blind experiment, female participants performed a word-association task while smelling one of the three types of olfactory stimuli: fear sweat, neutral sweat, and control odor carrier. We found that the participants exposed to the fear condition performed more accurately and yet with no sacrifice for speed on meaningful word conditions than those under either the neutral or the control condition. At the same time, they performed slower on tasks that contained ambiguous content. Possible factors that could introduce bias, such as individual differences due to anxiety, verbal skills, and perceived qualities of the smells, were ruled out. Our results demonstrate that human fear chemosignals enhance cognitive performances in the recipient. We suggest that this effect originates from learned associations, including greater cautiousness and concomitant changes in cognitive strategies.  相似文献
