The study of the structural and functional properties of key components of polar marine ecosystems has received increased
attention in order to better understand the ecological consequences of future sea temperature rise and seasonal ice retraction.
Owing to this purpose, during the ATOS-Arctic cruise, held in July 2007 in the framework of the 2007–2008 International Polar
Year, we studied the respiratory carbon demand of mesozooplankton as well as their contribution to the regeneration of inorganic
nitrogen and phosphorus (NH4-N and PO4-P) via excretion. The studied area comprised several stations along a latitudinal gradient in the East Greenland current, plus a
network of stations NW of the Svalbard islands. The specific respiratory carbon losses and phosphorus (PO4-P) excretion rates were similar or slightly higher than some reports for Arctic mesozooplankton, but the nitrogen (NH4-N) excretion rates were higher by a factor of 3 when compared with previous data sets. The mesozooplankton respiratory losses
were equivalent to 23% of primary production, and at turn zooplankton contributed by excretion to more than 50% of the N and
P required by phytoplankton. Although C:N, C:P and N:P metabolic atomic quotients almost coincided with the average Redfield’s
stoichiometric ratios, the low C:N values when compared to previous reports suggested a predominance of protein-related metabolic
substrates. The potential consequences of changes observed in the C:N, N:P and C:P metabolic ratios of mesozooplankton for

Many vertebrate species show display behaviors when predators are in their vicinity. Some of these displays may inform the
predator of the improbability of capturing the prey (i.e., pursuit-deterrent displays) and are potentially advantageous to
both predator and prey. Here we present data on a tail display performed by Gonatodes albogularis, a diurnal tropical gecko. We performed transect surveys in three habitats near Bogotá in Colombia. Geckos detected during
transects were approached by the observer in a standardized way, and details of their tail-waving displays were recorded.
In control recordings animals were watched from a distant site without approaching them. Results showed sexual differences
in tail-waving display: when approached by the observer, males performed this behavior more frequently than females. We found
no significant differences between males and females in flight-initiation distances and height above the substratum when they
were initially located. Results also showed that males displayed more frequently when approached than when the simulated predator
remained stationary. We interpret these results as evidence that the display functions as a pursuit-deterrent signal to potential
predators. However, as some tail displays were performed in the presence of conspecifics, the display may also have a social

The distribution of NADPH-diaphorase activity was examined inthe accessory olfactory bulb of the rat using a direct histochemicaltechnique. Labeled fibers and somata were found in all layersof the accessory olfactory bulb. The entire vomeronasal nerveand all vomeronasal glomeruli were strongly labeled, contraryto the main olfactory bulb, where only dorsomedial olfactoryglomeruli displayed NADPH-diaphorase activity. NADPH-diapborasepositive neurons were identified as periglomerular cells inthe glomerular layer and external plexiform layer, horizontalcells in the internal plexiform layer, and granule cells anddeep short-axon cells in the granule cell layer. The labeleddendrites of the granule cells formed a dense neuropile in thegranule cell layer, internal plexiform layer and external plexiformlayer. The staining pattern in the accessory olfactory bulbwas more complex than what has been previously reported, anddemonstrated both similarities and differences with the distributionof NADPH-diaphorase in the main olfactory bulb. 相似文献

Microbial physiological responses resulting from inappropriate bioprocessing conditions may have a marked impact on process performance within any fermentation system. The influence of different pH-control strategies on physiological status, microbial growth and lactobionic acid production from whey by Pseudomonas taetrolens during bioreactor cultivations has been investigated for the first time in this work. Both cellular behaviour and bioconversion efficiency from P. taetrolens were found to be negatively influenced by pH-control modes carried out at values lower than 6.0 and higher than 7.0. Production schemes were also influenced by the operational pH employed, with asynchronous production from damaged and metabolically active subpopulations at pH values lower than 6.0. Moreover, P. taetrolens showed reduced cellular proliferation and a subsequent delay in the onset of the production phase under acidic conditions (pH?<?6.0). Unlike cultivations performed at 6.5, both pH-shift and pH-stat cultivation strategies performed at pH values lower than 6.0 resulted in decreased lactobionic acid production. Whereas the cellular response showed a stress-induced physiological response under acidic conditions, healthy functional cells were predominant at medium operational pH values (6.5–7.0). P. taetrolens thus displayed a robust physiological status at initial pH value of 6.5, resulting in an enhanced bioconversion yield and lactobionic acid productivity (7- and 4-fold higher compared to those attained at initial pH values of 4.5 and 5.0, respectively). These results have shown that pH-control modes strongly affected both the physiological response of cells and the biological performance of P. taetrolens, providing key information for bio-production of lactobionic acid on an industrial scale. 相似文献

Eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF-2) is a heterotrimeric protein with subunits α, β and γ that forms a ternary complex with
Met-tRNA and GTP. It promotes the binding of Met-tRNA to ribosomes and controls translational rates via phosphorylation/dephosphorylation
mechanisms. By means of immunofluorescence and post-embedding immunocytochemistry of intact cells and quantitative immunoblotting
of cell extracts, the cellular distribution of the initiation factor has been examined in primary neuronal cultures as well
as in two established cell lines: PC12 phaeochromocytoma cells and rat pituitary GH4C1 cells. Our results indicated that the
initiation factor is located not only in the cytoplasm but also in the nuclei of the cultured neurons and cell lines. In the
cytoplasm, immunocytochemical studies reveal that the factor is present mainly in those areas that are rich in ribosomes.
In the nucleus, the immunolabelling of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 verified the presence of gold particles in both nucleolar
and extranucleolar areas. The specific distribution of this factor on both sides of the nuclear envelope suggests that it

Cryptic species are common in the ocean, particularly among marine invertebrates such as octopuses. Delineating cryptic species is particularly problematic in octopus taxonomy where the plasticity recorded among taxonomic characters often results in low resolution at the species level. This study investigated the morphological relationships among seven phylogenetic clades (identified using cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) of the broadly distributed Octopus vulgaris species complex and close relatives. Morphological analyses in this study were successful in delimiting O. sinensis, Brazilian O. vulgaris and O. vulgaris sensu stricto, which was congruent with the molecular findings of this study. Analyses based on male morphology were successful in distinguishing 14 of 15 total pairwise comparisons and proved to be a more reliable indicator of species‐level relationships in comparison with female morphology. The majority of characters with the greatest discriminatory power were male sexual traits. Significant morphological differences were also recorded among sampling localities of conspecifics, with phenotype showing correlation with local environmental data. The findings of this study support the hypothesis that multiple O. vulgaris‐like species are currently being incorrectly treated under a single species name, O. vulgaris. Octopuses being exported globally under the name O. vulgaris are of extremely high fisheries market value and profile. Our findings have potentially significant implications for the naming and conservation of commercially harvested members of this species complex throughout their ranges. 相似文献

The complement cascade in mammalian blood can damage the alimentary tract of haematophagous arthropods. As such, these animals have evolved their own repertoire of complement-inactivating factors, which are inadvertently exploited by blood-borne pathogens to escape complement lysis. Unlike the bloodstream stages, the procyclic (insect) stage of Trypanosoma brucei is highly susceptible to complement killing, which is puzzling considering that a tsetse takes a bloodmeal every 2–4 days. In this study, we identified four tsetse (Glossina morsitans morsitans) serine protease inhibitors (serpins) from a midgut expressed sequence tag (EST) library (GmmSRPN3, GmmSRPN5, GmmSRPN9 and GmmSRPN10) and investigated their role in modulating the establishment of a T. brucei infection in the midgut. Although not having evolved in a common blood-feeding ancestor, all four serpins have an active site sharing remarkable homology with the human complement C1-inhibitor serpin, SerpinG1. RNAi knockdown of individual GmmSRPN9 and GmmSRPN10 genes resulted in a significant decreased rate of infection by procyclic form T. brucei. Furthermore, recombinant GmmSRPN10 was both able to inhibit the activity of human complement-cascade serine proteases, C1s and Factor D, and to protect the in vitro killing of procyclic trypanosomes when incubated with complement-activated human serum. Thus, the secretion of serpins, which may be part of a bloodmeal complement inactivation system in tsetse, is used by procyclic trypanosomes to evade an influx of fresh trypanolytic complement with each bloodmeal. This highlights another facet of the complicated relationship between T. brucei and its tsetse vector, where the parasite takes advantage of tsetse physiology to further its chances of propagation and transmission. 相似文献
