The aims of this study were to characterise the ground-level larval habitats of
the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus, to determine the
relationships between habitat characteristics and larval abundance and to
examine seasonal larval-stage variations in Córdoba city. Every two weeks for
two years, 15 larval habitats (natural and artificial water bodies, including
shallow wells, drains, retention ponds, canals and ditches) were visited and
sampled for larval mosquitoes. Data regarding the water depth, temperature and
pH, permanence, the presence of aquatic vegetation and the density of collected
mosquito larvae were recorded. Data on the average air temperatures and
accumulated precipitation during the 15 days prior to each sampling date were
also obtained. Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae were collected
throughout the study period and were generally most abundant in the summer
season. Generalised linear mixed models indicated the average air temperature
and presence of dicotyledonous aquatic vegetation as variables that served as
important predictors of larval densities. Additionally, permanent breeding sites
supported high larval densities. In Córdoba city and possibly in other highly
populated cities at the same latitude with the same environmental conditions,
control programs should focus on permanent larval habitats with aquatic
vegetation during the early spring, when the Cx.
quinquefasciatus population begins to increase. 相似文献

Some assessment and diagnosis methods require palpation or the application of certain forces on the skin, which affects the structures beneath, we highlight the importance of defining possible influences on skin temperature as a result of this physical contact. Thus, the aim of the present study is to determine the ideal time for performing thermographic examination after palpation based on the assessment of skin temperature evolution. Randomized and crossover study carried out with 15 computer-user volunteers of both genders, between 18 and 45 years of age, who were submitted to compressive forces of 0, 1, 2 and 3 kg/cm2 for 30 seconds with a washout period of 48 hours using a portable digital dynamometer. Compressive forces were applied on the following spots on the dominant upper limb: myofascial trigger point in the levator scapulae, biceps brachii muscle and palmaris longus tendon. Volunteers were examined by means of infrared thermography before and after the application of compressive forces (15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes). In most comparisons made over time, a significant decrease was observed 30, 45 and 60 minutes after the application of compressive forces (p < 0.05) on the palmaris longus tendon and biceps brachii muscle. However, no difference was observed when comparing the different compressive forces (p > 0.05). In conclusion, infrared thermography can be used after assessment or diagnosis methods focused on the application of forces on tendons and muscles, provided the procedure is performed 15 minutes after contact with the skin. Regarding to the myofascial trigger point, the thermographic examination can be performed within 60 minutes after the contact with the skin. 相似文献

Distribution and abundance of disease vectors are directly related to climatic conditions and environmental changes. Remote sensing data have been used for monitoring environmental conditions influencing spatial patterns of vector‐borne diseases. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and climatic factors (temperature, humidity, wind velocity, and accumulated rainfall) on the distribution and abundance of Anopheles species in northwestern Argentina using Poisson regression analyses. Samples were collected from December, 2001 to December, 2005 at three localities, Aguas Blancas, El Oculto and San Ramón de la Nueva Orán. We collected 11,206 adult Anopheles species, with the major abundance observed at El Oculto (59.11%), followed by Aguas Blancas (22.10%) and San Ramón de la Nueva Orán (18.79%). Anopheles pseudopunctipennis was the most abundant species at El Oculto, Anopheles argyritarsis predominated in Aguas Blancas, and Anopheles strodei in San Ramón de la Nueva Orán. Samples were collected throughout the sampling period, with the highest peaks during the spring seasons. LST and mean temperature appear to be the most important variables determining the distribution patterns and major abundance of An. pseudopunctipennis and An. argyritarsis within malarious areas. 相似文献

Four species of the genus Gymnotus are present in Argentina: G. inaequilabiatus, G. omarorum, G. pantanal, and G. sylvius, the last three species being recorded for the first time in freshwater courses. Gymnotus omarorum, G. pantanal, and G. sylvius together with others of the genus Brachyhypopomus are the group of fishes that bear the greatest impact in the trade as live bait for sport fishing in the northeastern region of Argentina. Within this large area, only the provinces of Chaco, Corrientes, and Formosa have regulations for the catch, trade, and sale of species as live bait. Unfortunately, the species covered by legal regulations are Gymnotus carapo and Brachyhypopomus brevirostris, neither of which occurs in freshwater habitats of Argentina. Comments are included as to how this bad taxonomy affects the regulations and conservation status of these species. 相似文献

Brucella abortus is the etiological agent of bovine brucellosis, an infectious disease of humans and cattle. Its pathogenesis is mainly based
on its ability to survive and multiply inside macrophages. It has been demonstrated that if B. abortus ferrochelatase cannot incorporate iron into protoporphyrin IX to synthesize heme, the intracellular replication and virulence
in mice is highly attenuated. Therefore, it can be hypothesized that the unavailability of iron could lead to the same attenuation
in B. abortus pathogenicity. Thus, the purpose of this work was to obtain a B. abortus derivative unable to keep an internal iron pool and test its ability to replicate under iron limitation. To achieve this,
we searched for iron-storage proteins in the genome of brucellae and found bacterioferritin (Bfr) as the sole ferritin encoded.
Then, a B. abortus bfr mutant was built up and its capacity to store iron and replicate under iron limitation was investigated. Results indicated
that B. abortus Bfr accounts for 70% of the intracellular iron content. Under iron limitation, the bfr mutant suffered from enhanced iron restriction with respect to wild type according to its growth retardation pattern, enhanced
sensitivity to oxidative stress, accelerated production of siderophores, and altered expression of membrane proteins. Nonetheless,
the bfr mutant was able to adapt and replicate even inside eukaryotic cells, indicating that B. abortus responds to internal iron starvation before sensing external iron availability. This suggests an active role of Bfr in controlling
iron homeostasis through the availability of Bfr-bound iron. 相似文献

We characterized 13 accessions of dry peas of different origins from various growing regions in Argentina, based on three replications of 20 plants cultivated in 2009 and 2010 in a greenhouse, with the objective of selecting those with favorable characteristics for use in breeding programs. Significant differences were found for length and width of stipule and pod, length of the internodes and leaflets, plant height, total number of nodes, number of nodes at the first pod, number of days to flowering and to harvest, number of pods and seeds per pod, 100-seed weight and grain diameter, demonstrating a high degree of genetic variability. Phenotypic correlation analysis demonstrated that large pods produced more seeds per pod, but the seed weight decreased. Plants with smaller number of nodes in the first pod were more productive. Estimates of genotypic correlation coefficients indicated a strong inherent association among the different traits. Clustering methods grouped the accessions into five clusters. Cluster 5 included two accessions and showed the highest values for length and width of stipules (4.9 and 4.5 cm, respectively), length of leaflets (7.43 cm) and days to flowering (122.6), while cluster 3, with one accession, and cluster 4, with two accessions, showed the highest values for number of seeds per pod (3.78 and 4.39), number of pods per plant (5.33 and 5.70), length of pods (5.54 and 5.72 cm), and width of pods (1.21 and 1.20 cm, respectively). We conclude that accessions in clusters 3 and 4 would be useful for crosses with other cultivars in pea breeding programs. 相似文献
