Different Spanish unifloral honeys (eucalyptus, sunflower, rosemary, thyme, lavender, citrus, anise, quercus, and lemon blossom) and one multifloral honey were studied by Free-Choice Profiling (FCP) analysis. Generalized Procrustes Analysis (GPA) applied to the FCP data allowed discrimination between samples and provided information on the attributes responsible for the differences observed. The honeys had significantly different sensory characteristics. Textural attributes were the predominant factor in discriminating between samples, and appearance (color included) was also correlated with GPA dimensions to a lesser extent.  相似文献

Rice cultivars resistant to broad‐spectrum herbicides have been developed and their commercial release is imminent, especially for imidazolinone and glufosinate resistant varieties in the USA and Latin America. Glyphosate‐resistant rice should follow within a few years. Rice growers throughout the world could benefit from the introduction of herbicide‐resistant rice cultivars that would allow in‐crop, selective control of weedy Oryza species. Other perceived benefits are the possibility to control ‘hard‐to‐kill’ weed species and weed populations that have already evolved resistance to herbicides currently used in rice production, especially those of the Echinochloa species complex. Weed management could also be improved by more efficient post‐emergence control. Introduction of herbicide resistant rice could also bring areas heavily infested with weedy rice that have been abandoned back to rice production, allow longer term crop rotations, reduce consumption of fossil fuels, promote the replacement of traditional chemicals by more environmentally benign products, and provide more rice grain without adding new land to production. There are also concerns, however, about the impact of releasing herbicide‐resistant rice on weed problems. Of most concern is the possibility of rapid transfer of the resistance trait to compatible weedy Oryza species. Development of such herbicide resistant weedy rice populations would substantially limit the chemical weed management options for farmers. Herbicide‐resistant rice volunteers also could become problematic, and added selection pressure to weed populations could aggravate already serious weed resistance problems. Because of the risk of weedy Oryza species becoming resistant to broad‐spectrum herbicides, mitigating measures to prevent gene flow, eventually attainable by both conventional breeding and molecular genetics, have been proposed. With commercialisation of the first herbicide resistant varieties planned for 2001, these mitigating measures will not be available for use with this first generation of herbicide resistant rice products. Release of herbicide resistant rice should depend on a thorough risk assessment especially in areas infested with con‐specific weedy rice or intercrossing weedy Oryza species. Regulators will have to balance risks and benefits based on local needs and conditions before allowing commercialisation of herbicide‐resistant rice varieties. If accepted, these varieties should be considered as components of integrated weed management, and a rational herbicide use and weedy rice control should be promoted to prevent losing this novel tool.  相似文献

Abstract Most insect pheromones comprise multicomponent blends of geometric or optical isomers, and one major question is how insects produce species‐specific ratios of components for successful reproductive isolation. Key enzymes suggested to be involved in pheromone biosynthesis are acetyl‐coenzyme A carboxylase and fatty acyl synthetase, chain‐shortening enzymes, desaturases, elongases, reductases, oxidases, and alcohol acetyl transferases. The female pheromone composition of the Egyptian armyworm Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) is highly dependent on the origin of the strain. In this review, we present a summary of the different reported pheromone compositions of the moth, including from our recent studies on this subject, as well as the biosynthetic routes to the different components and the molecular approaches involved. In addition, the key role played in the proposed biosynthetic pathways by a number of important biosynthetic enzymes, such as chain shortening enzymes, desaturases and alcohol acetyl transferases, is outlined, as well as the latest developments on the inhibition of these enzymes.  相似文献

1. Studies of planktonic size spectra have been common in recent years, but few concerning the effects of autumnal lake processes on those distributions have been reported. We carried out such a study for 93 days during early circulation in a small, mesotrophic, seepage lake with only benthivorous fish. Two distinct mixing periods occurred before full circulation in Las Madres lake (Spain). As a proxy of overall planktonic‐ and phytoplanktonic size distributions, the shape of a Pareto I power function was traced over time. The phytoplanktonic size spectrum was also used to test the hypothesis that phytoplankton might show a trophic cascade during early circulation. 2. Our results demonstrated that the overall size spectrum changed smoothly during the autumnal mixing, with sequential changes controlled by a combination of biotic and abiotic variables, albeit experiencing different temporal delays, always shorter than a week. A first combined, autogenic process, driven both by algal competition and a crustacean trophic effect, and a second physical‐forcing process, driven by the combined effect of convective cooling and decreasing irradiance on mixed layer dynamics, may be related to the overall planktonic spectrum in the first and second periods of mixing, respectively. 3. The phytoplanktonic size spectrum did not appear to be dictated by a trophic cascade in Las Madres lake, their dynamics being mostly controlled by physical forcing, along with some effect of non‐edible primary producers and cladocerans in the first and second periods of mixing, respectively. 4. Our results and others covering early circulation with longer sampling periods suggest that planktonic size spectral dynamics during lake circulation is context‐dependent (i.e. varying from one lake to another), thus preventing generalisation. However, when further studies with finer temporal resolution have been carried out, it is likely that clear‐cut patterns in the planktonic size spectrum will emerge, arising from the interplay of autogenic plankton dynamics, implying some resistance to community change because of external physical forcing, and the velocity of autumnal mixing.  相似文献

Abstract. In some insects, the finding of oviposition substrate triggers the uptake into oocytes of yolk proteins that are stored in the fat body during post‐embryonic development. The main host of the bean weevil Zabrotes subfasciatus (Coleoptera; Chrysomelidae; Bruchinae; Amblycerini), in which larval resources are the sole source for future egg maturation, is Phaseolus vulgaris. Despite not feeding as adults, females of this species are able to lay eggs after encountering host seeds but it is not known how females react to changes in the availability of bean seeds. In the present study, the behaviour of Z. subfasciatus facing two very different environments for oviposition is investigated, as well as how this influences offspring fitness. The results obtained show that females of Z. subfasciatus react to variations in the availability of seeds belonging to the same host species by adjusting egg size and number. Females on low bean seed density lay larger and fewer eggs than those on high bean seed density, demonstrating a trade‐off between these reproductive traits. Moreover, females can adjust egg size to changing levels of host availability during the first 4 days of their oviposition period. Although no difference in offspring weight is found, those from small eggs (low competition environment) result in larger adults. No response to selection on these traits after rearing beetles on the same host for 40 generations is observed. This unresponsiveness may indicate that beetle populations behave according to their reaction norm that already allows rapid adaptation to a varying amount of host‐seed availability and better exploitation of the environments of this widespread stored‐seed pest.  相似文献

Structural variations between edge and interior areas within forest fragments may bring about differences in food availability that may influence the selective behaviour of predators and prey population dynamics. The purpose of this paper was to assess patterns of artificial prey selection by wild birds (House Sparrow Passer domesticus and Rock Dove Columba livid) between edge and interior areas of woodland, taking into account differences in prey frequency (10% of one food type and 90% of the other) and density (30 baits/m-2 and 50 baits/m-2). Experiments were conducted at 24 plots in 3 forest fragments in the city of Madrid, Spain. Selectivity did not vary among parks or between densities. However, selectivity did vary with the frequency and location of baits, showing an anti-apostatic trend (baits were preferred at low rather than at high frequencies) that was more pronounced at interiors than at edges. Two possible factors that may account for stronger anti-apostatic selection at edges are the higher densities of predators and pedestrians found there. However, there are many other possible explanations, and no specific conclusion can be supported with the current data. The results of this study also point out that site heterogeneity should be taken into account in the experimental design of future studies on frequency-dependent food selection by wild birds, particularly in fragmented landscapes.  相似文献

Chromosomes obtained from bone-marrow, spleen and testes were studied in samples from five populations of Spalacopus cyanus of Central Chile. Animals of four low-land coastal localities and animals of a high Andean valley showed a karyotype of 2n = 58 chromosomes, with almost no variation, either in number or in structure, both within each population or among the various populations. This karyotype was found to be very similar to that of Octodon degus , but very different to those in species of Ctenomys. The evolutionary and systematic significance of these results is discussed. The lack of karyotypic variation found in Spalacopus is correlated with its taxonomic uniformity, and both could be the result of the high vagility of the populations of this rodent, suggested by previous studies. This high capacity of dispersal is supposed to have enhanced gene flow, and therewith chromosome uniformity and low taxonomic diversification. The occurrence of a case of dimorphism for the presence of a secondary constriction in one of the autosome pairs is reported and discussed.  相似文献

Dengue viruses are transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female aedine mosquitoes. Differences in the composition and structure of bacterial communities in the midguts of mosquitoes may affect the vector's ability to transmit the disease. To investigate and analyse the role of midgut bacterial communities in viral transmission, midgut bacteria from three species, namely Stegomyia aegypti (= Aedes aegypti), Fredwardsius vittatus (= Aedes vittatus) and Stegomyia albopicta (= Aedes albopictus) (all: Diptera: Culicidae), from dengue‐endemic and non‐endemic areas of Rajasthan, India were compared. Construction and analyses of six 16S rRNA gene libraries indicated that Serratia spp.‐related phylotypes dominated all clone libraries of the three mosquito species from areas in which dengue is not endemic. In dengue‐endemic areas, phylotypes related to Aeromonas, Enhydrobacter spp. and uncultivated bacterium dominated the clone libraries of S. aegypti, F. vittatus and S. albopicta, respectively. Diversity indices analysis and real‐time TaqMan polymerase chain reaction assays showed bacterial diversity and abundance in the midguts of S. aegypti to be higher than in the other two species. Significant differences observed among midgut bacterial communities of the three mosquito species from areas in which dengue is and is not endemic, respectively, may be related to the vectorial capacity of mosquitoes to carry dengue viruses and, hence, to the prevalence of disease in some areas.  相似文献
