ABSTRACT. Removal of a hindwing pad from late instar nymphs of the striped ground cricket, Allonemobius fasciatus DeGeer (Gryllidae) inhibits the formation of long-winged adults. All nymphs become short-winged when their hindwing pad is removed during the sixth (penultimate) instar or during the first 2 days of the seventh instar. When a hindwing pad is removed on day 4 of the seventh instar or later, there is no effect on wing development and at least 50% of the crickets emerge as long-winged adults as in controls.
The period sensitive for removal of a hindwing pad varies among different structures, e.g. elytra, hindwings, flight muscles, and the acrotergite of the first abdominal segment. As a result, some intermediate forms are produced when a hindwing pad is removed in the middle of the seventh instar.
Implantation of corpora allata (CA) into late instar nymphs also inhibits formation of long-winged adults. When CA are implanted on day 2 or 3 of the seventh instar, some of the resulting adults have abnormally short elytra. Implantation of CA at an earlier stage produces supernumerary (eighth instar) nymphs.  相似文献

Quantities of ecdysteroid are compared in the haemolymph and ovaries of the blowfly Protophormia terraenovae Robineau‐Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) under reproductive (LD 18 : 6 h at 25 °C) and diapause (LD 12 : 12 h at 20 °C) conditions. The effects of ablation of the pars intercerebralis or ovaries on ecdysteroid quantities and of ablation of the pars intercerebralis on yolk protein expression are examined. Under reproductive conditions, the levels of ecdysteroid in vitellogenic females are high, although the levels in previtellogenic females and females with mature ovaries are low. Under diapause conditions, there are low quantities of ecdysteroid in both the haemolymph and ovaries. Ecdysteroid titres in the haemolymph are not significantly affected by the removal of the ovaries, suggesting that tissues other than the ovaries are also involved in the production of ecdysteroids. Reproductive females in which the pars intercerebralis of the brain is experimentally ablated have ecdysteroid levels that are not significantly different from sham‐operated or intact females. However, yolk protein expression in the fat body is suppressed after removal of the pars intercerebralis. These results suggest that the suppression of ecdysteroid levels in the haemolymph and ovaries is associated with reproductive diapause, and that the pars intercerebralis could play a role in yolk protein synthesis without mediating ecdysteroid production.  相似文献

We examined two mutants of D. discoideum which are temperature-sensitive for development. At the nonpermissive temperature one mutant becomes arrested in development during the transition from the finger to the migrating slug. Temperature-shift experiment indicates that the temperature-sensitive period begins at considerably earlier tip-forming stage. The other mutant becomes arrested at the Mexican hat stage and the temperature-sensitive period coinsided with this stage. The analysis of protein synthesis by two-dimensional gels, however, showed specific changes at the nonpermissive temperature at an earlier finger-forming stage.
These results indicate the presence of a control of late development by proteins at early stages.  相似文献

The present study investigates the emergence of adult white grub beetles Dasylepida ishigakiensis Niijima et Kinoshita (Coleoptera: Scrabaeidae) from soil as well as their burrowing behaviours. ‘Standby behaviour’ (i.e. adults come to the soil surface where they expose their heads) is shown in the field and, along with emergence behaviour, is entrained by LD photocycles. These 24‐h rhythms persist after transfer to continuous light conditions for 2 days. By contrast, beetles transferred from LD photocycles to continuous dark conditions fail to show standby behaviour; thus, it appears to be manifested only in the presence of illumination. Under dark conditions, beetles emerge completely from the soil directly at the time when standby behaviour is otherwise expected to occur. Emerged adults then burrow back into the soil before dawn. Virgin and mated males, as well as virgin females, which are expected to emerge from the soil for mating on later evenings, burrow to a relatively shallow depth (<2 cm), whereas mated females burrow deeper (2–10 cm). Soil properties such as moisture, grain size, topography and temperature influence the burrowing behaviour and the depths that the beetles reach.  相似文献

From leaves of barley and spinach, cellular components wereisolated and brought together under various conditions to investigatethe fate of ascorbic acid as affected by the components in thelight and dark. 2. A new colorimetric method for assaying ascorbic acid andsome other reducing substances was devised, measuring the colorof molybdenum-blue developed by the substances in the presenceof excess amounts of phosphomolybdate and inorganic acid. 3. The photooxidation of ascorbic acid by green and yellow filtrates,prepared from green and etiolated leaves of barley, was studiedby the ordinary as well as the new colorimetric method. In thepresence of oxygen, the oxidation of ascorbic acid was foundto be accelerated by light in the green filtrate, but not inthe yellow filtrate. 4. The oxidation of the endogenous reducing substance containedin the supernatant fraction of spinach leaf extracts was studiedin the presence of washed chloroplasts (spinach). In the presenceof oxygen, the rate of oxidation in the light was markedly higherthan in the dark. From the changes in absorption spectrum accompanyingthe reaction, the endogenous reducing substance in questionwas identified as ascorbic acid. 5. The occurrence of an endogenous precursor of ascorbic acidin spinach leaf extracts was disclosed. The photoreduction ofthis precursor into ascorbic acid was studied in the precenceof spinach chloroplasts. A specific inhibition of this reactionby phosphoglycerate and glycerophosphate was discovered. 6. The activities of green cell-free extracts of spinach leavesin performing photochemical transphosphorylation, photosyntheticphosphorylation, the HILL reaction and the light-induced formationof the endogenous reducing substance (ascorbic acid) were followedin parallel during the growth process of the plant. There wasa certain parallelism between the development of the activitiesof photochemical transphosphorylation, of photo-synthetic phosphorylationand of the HILL reaction, activities being low in the earlierstage of growth, reaching a maximum just before efflorescence,and showing thereafter a more or less sharp decline. The activityin the light-induced formation of endogenous reducing substancewas undetectable for the first 35 day-period of growth, reacheda maximum about one week earlier than the other three activities,and again disappeared after 60 days of growth. The optical features of lateral ocelli of the eye were examined in 29 Recent species of the major ostracod group Podocopida using a theoretical morphological model. A cuticular lens–tapetum model was used for this purpose. Ray tracing was simulated on each model in order to assess the light-gathering abilities of the various forms of eyes. The results of computer simulations and morphospace analyses indicated that the light-gathering ability of the eye is dominantly affected by the thickness and curvature of the outer surface of the lens. On the basis of a combination of form and light-gathering ability, four eye types (LG1, LG2, MG, and HG) were recognized. The results of the phototactic experiment and the light intensity from each microhabitat were concordant with estimated scores on the light-gathering abilities using the theoretical models. Phylogenetic analyses and the fossil record indicate that the MG type is the most plesiomorphic, and that the other types derive from this. The diversity and niche specificity of hemi-epiphytic figs in a lowland dipterocarp forest in Sarawak were investigated in 1998. Twenty-seven fig species (264 individuals, c. 120 ha) colonized a diversity of host taxa (35 families), but densities were very low and only 1.77% of trees> 30 cm d.b.h. were occupied. There were no significant associations with host taxa or host-bark roughness but among 11 common species (≥9 individuals) the distributions of all other parameters (host-d.b.h., height and position of colonization, crown illumination, soil-texture and slope-angle) were significantly different, and we identified five fig guilds. The guilds corresponded to canopy strata, and appeared to reflect the establishment microsite requirements of different species. A fundamental trade-off within the hemi-epiphytic habit was revealed: Species colonizing larger hosts were rarer, because of lower host densities and more specific microsite requirements, but had better light environments and attained a larger maximum size. The single strangler species appeared to escape many of these constraints, and an important source of mortality caused by host-toppling, indicating the advantages of this strategy.
