A report was made on the outcome of a four year retrospective study in 27 064 pregnancies, of the clinical efficiency, sensitivity, and specificity of a screening programme for Down''s syndrome based on reported strategies related to the measurement of maternal serum alpha fetoprotein. This study identified 27 pregnancies affected by Down''s syndrome with a median multiple of the median maternal serum alpha fetoprotein concentration of 0.82. This figure is considerably higher than that obtained from previous reports on this subject. With an age related multiple of the median maternal serum alpha fetoprotein strategy, 30.8% of Down''s affected pregnancies were identified as well as 11.6% of unaffected pregnancies. Perhaps a United Kingdom collaborative study should begin to investigate the reasons for such wide population variance in the reports for the median multiple of the median for Down''s affected pregnancies. Until such studies are carried out, screening for Down''s syndrome based on low maternal serum alpha fetoprotein concentration is premature.  相似文献

A photoaffinity label, 4-azidobenzoyltrimethionine has been synthesized. It competitively inhibits trimethionine uptake in the yeast C. albicans. Upon UV irradiation it irreversibly and specifically blocks oligopeptide uptake. These results give the first example of photoinhibition of peptide uptake in yeast.  相似文献

Using a high-sensitivity differential scanning microcalorimeter capable of performing cooling scans, we have examined the phase behavior of small unilamellar vesicles (SUV) as a function of time of storage above their order-disorder phase transition. Vesicles composed of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) were examined. Cooling scans on fresh (5-7-h postsonication) samples revealed broad, relatively simple heat capacity peaks (peak temperatures: 19.9 degrees C for DMPC, 37.8 degrees C for DPPC) free of high-temperature spikes or shoulders. Subsequent heating scans displayed a sharp peak characteristic of previously described fusion products formed below the phase transition. SUV samples stored for 1 or more days above their phase transition displayed a moderately broad, high-temperature shoulder (23.8 degrees C for DMPC and 40.2 degrees C for DPPC) in the cooling profile. For DMPC, the enthalpy associated with this peak increased in a first-order fashion with time. Hydrolysis products were not detected until 12-20 days of storage. Both the rate and extent of shoulder appearance increased with temperature (k = 0.0017 h-1, fraction of total enthalpy = 0.1 at 36 degrees C; k = 0.0037 h-1, fraction = 0.2 at 42 degrees C). Freeze-fracture electron micrographs confirmed that an intermediate-sized vesicle population (diameters 400-500 A) appeared in SUV samples stored above their phase transition. Also, the trapped volume of DMPC SUV increased from 0.26 microL/mumol after 17 h of storage to 0.54 microL/mumol after storage for 16 days at 36 degrees C.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The clinical and laboratory findings in seven children with Kawasaki disease are reviewed. Four of the patients had the more complicated course that has characterized the cases diagnosed in North America. This suggests that the benign forms are often mistaken for other febrile illnesses. The patients were two girls and five boys ranging in age from 4 months to 7 years; six were Caucasian and one was a North American Indian. Fever, redness of the oral mucosa, an erythematous or scarlatiniform rash and cervical adenopathy were seen in all; six patients had the characteristic fingertip desquamation and nonexudative conjunctivitis. Cardiac involvement occurred in four patients, two of whom had coronary artery aneurysm or thrombosis. Arthritis or arthralgia was seen in six patients, and aseptic meningitis occurred in four. Of the three patients with jaundice two underwent laparotomy and excision of a hydropic gallbladder; one of them died from Klebsiella pneumoniae sepsis and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy.  相似文献

Abstract In Trichodesmium contortum , nitrogenase was detected in only a limited number (about 10%) of microscopically distinguishable, consecutively arranged cells in central regions of the trichomes. Cells with nitrogenase also contained the photosystem II associated pigment phycoerythrin. These cells were not distinguishable from other cells on a structural basis, but were clearly visible at low magnification microscopy as all in the zone were more compact and shorter than those on either side. The compartmentalisation of nitrogenase into a chain of cells and in a possibly photosynthetic environment represents a previously undescribed phenomenon. The nitrogenase containing cells apparently perform the O2 protective function of heterocysts yet are different in several aspects.  相似文献

A series of 4-day manipulations of zooplankton biomass and nutrientavailability was performed in enclosures in three lakes to determinespecies-specific algal responses to herbivory and nutrient enrichment.Algal performance in enclosures was compared to the relationshipsbetween weekly algal growth rates and the zooplankton in situ.When in situ growth rates were significant functions of zooplanktonbiomass, the responses were generally consistent with responsesin the enclosure experiments. The importance of both nutrientsand zooplankton in mediating algal growth was demonstrated bynumerous observations: strong algal community response to enrichment,unimodal or positive responses of certain algal taxa to zooplanktonbiomass, differences in degree of nutrient limitation amongthe algal response types, lack of nutrient limitation of non-grazedalgal taxa and a preponderance of taxa with no net responseto increasing zooplankton biomass. Variation in the zooplanktoncommunity may be the largest source of variability in nutrientsupply rate during summer in stratified lakes, and causes substationalvariability in the algae. Using an immunofluorescence assay developed to identify serogroups(i.e. clusters of strains labelled by one antiserum), the compositionof natural populations of phycoerythrin-containing Synechococcusspp. was examined. The 7803 (open ocean clone)-serogroup wasfound in most oceanic regions, but was most prevalent (up to85%) in tropical and subtropical waters during spring and summer.At coastal Long Island stations it was most abundant (up to65%) when water temperatures were >22°C. The seasonaland geographic distribution of the 7803-serogroup appeared tobe limited by water temperature. No consistent pattern was observedin the per cent composition with depth in the Sargasso Sea orat coastal to offshore stations in the North-west Atlantic Oceanor eastern tropical North Pacific Ocean. The 8016 (coastal clone)-serogroupwas abundant at coastal and estuarine stations off Long Island(up to 95 %) and its appearance was also correlated with warmwater temperature (> 15°C). However, this serogroup remaineda constant proportion of the population at the Long Island Soundstation during early winter months (through January) when abundanceof the 7803-serogroup was negligible. Owing to limited data,the oceanic distribution of the 8016-serogroup is not yet discernible.Lastly, antisera to the phycocyanin-dominant Synechococcus spp.clones failed to label any cells in samples collected from severaloceanic stations.
