This study aimed to identify the sister group of the poorly known and morphologically isolated Burmese species Quedius lineipennis within the tribe Staphylinini (Staphylinidae: Staphylininae) using morphological characters. Phylogenetic analysis of a broad taxon sample demonstrated that this Asian species is not a member of the genus Quedius but forms the sister taxon to the Neotropical genus Quediomacrus. Both taxa were shown to be members of a hitherto unrecognized lineage with a highly disjunct distribution. The lineage is hypothesized to be Asian in origin, with dispersals to the Americas during the early Eocene climatic maximum via Beringia and to Australia via land connections in the late Miocene. The current distribution of the lineage is considered to be relictual. New phylogenetic hypotheses within ‘Quediina’ and Staphylinini as a whole are proposed and the general tree topology of Staphylinini recovered by recent morphological studies is refined. Phylogenetic relationships within the Quedius complex remain unclear. Alesiella Brunke and Solodovnikov gen.n. , is erected for Quedius lineipennis and the Quedius subgenus Quedionuchus is reinstated to genus level with new combinations as follows: Quedionuchus atl (Smetana, 1975), comb.n. ; Quedionuchus calli (Smetana, 1976), comb.n. ; Quedionuchus cipactli (Smetana, 1976), comb.n. ; Quedionuchus coatl (Smetana, 1976), comb.n. ; Quedionuchus ehacatl (Smetana, 1976), comb.n. ; Quedionuchus ollin (Smetana, 1976), comb.n. ; Quedionuchus ozomatli (Smetana, 1975), comb.n. ; Quedionuchus reitterianus (Bernhauer, 1944), comb.n. ; Quedionuchus samuraicus (Bernhauer and Schubert, 1916), comb.n. ; Quedionuchus schultzei (Smetana, 1975), comb.n. ; Quedionuchus tecpatl (Smetana, 1976), comb.n. ; Quedionuchus xochitl (Smetana, 1976). Quedius lugubris Lokay, 1913 is transferred from the subgenus Quedionuchus to the subgenus Distichalius and placed in synonymy: Quedius punctatellus (Heer, 1839) = Quedius lugubris Lokay, 1913, syn.n . Primary roots of maize (Zea mays L.) grown in nutrient solutionat 5?C elongate at about 1% of the rate found at 20?C. The apicalmeristem becomes shorter and shows little proliferative activityat 5?C, but following transfer to 20?C mitoses increase in frequencyand the meristem regrows to its original length. Both the amountby which the meristem shortens and the time for its completeregrowth are related to the period spent at 5?C. The shorteningof the meristem suggests that at the lower temperature the balancewhich normally exists between cell production and differentiationis altered, the latter continuing at a relatively faster ratethan the former. A new, steady-state balance between the twoprocesses is re-established during the recovery period. Themeristem recovers as a result not only of its own mitotic activitybut also through stimulation of cell division in the quiescentcentre. The degree to which the quiescent centre is activated,as judged by its mitotic index and the number of nuclei labelledby feeding with tritiated thymidine, increases as the durationof the preceding cold treatment increases. The close relationshipbetween proliferative activity in the quiescent centre and theminimum length of the meristem following the cold treatmentsuggests that there is communication between these two zoneswhich co-ordinates their respective rates of cell productionand helps to maintain a normal meristem structure. The resultsemphasize the importance of the quiescent centre as a reservoirof cells that can re-establish a meristem rendered non-functionalthrough the impact of unfavourable environmental conditions. 1. Population dynamics and interactions that vary over a species' range are of particular importance in the context of latitudinal clines in biological diversity. Winter moth (Operophtera brumata) and autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata) are two species of eruptive geometrids that vary widely in outbreak tendency over their range, which generally increases from south to north and with elevation. 2. The predation pressure on geometrid larvae and pupae over an elevational gradient was tested. The effects of background larval density and bird occupancy of monitoring nest boxes on predation rates were also tested. Predation on larvae was tested through exclusion treatments at 20 replicate stations over four elevations at one site, while pupae were set out to measure predation at two elevations at three sites. 3. Larval densities were reduced by bird predation at three lower elevations, but not at the highest elevation, and predation rates were 1.9 times higher at the lowest elevation than at the highest elevation. The rate of predation on larvae was not related to background larval density or nest box occupancy, although there were more eggs and chicks at the lowest elevation. There were no consistent differences in predation on pupae by elevation. 4. These results suggest that elevational variation in avian predation pressure on larvae may help to drive elevational differences in outbreak tendency, and that birds may play a more important role in geometrid population dynamics than the focus on invertebrate and soil predators of previous work would suggest.  相似文献

ACCELERATED erythropoiesis is associated with the production of reticulocytes of excessive size, perhaps as the result of skipped divisions during erythroid cell proliferation in the bone marrow1. Isotopic studies have been interpreted as showing that these “stress reticulocytes” are short-lived and are replaced by progressively smaller cells with more normal life spans1–6. It has recently been suggested, however, that stress reticulocytes are not destroyed in toto but are made smaller by a process of remodelling or surface fragmentation7; loss of only portions of these cells could explain most of the isotopic findings, although the residual cells might remain intact.  相似文献

The refractory periods for action potentials (AP) were investigatedin Lupinus shoots by application of pairs of electrical stimuli(d.c). The response (AP) for the second stimulus is characterized.The second response differs in amplitude, range, and propagationvelocity from the first, depending on the strength of the stimuliand the time interval between them. The absolute refractoryperiod determined on this basis lasts 12 min, and the relativeone from 12 to about 90 min. The character of the refractoryphenomenon is similar in the case of nerves, only the processesin Lupinus are 103 to 105 times slower. Genotypes of Solanum tuberosum, assessed for their differential response to a protoplast regeneration protocol, were identified. This enabled comparisons to be made in relation to their abilities to regenerate into dividing cells and colonies. Protoplasts from genotypes with contrasting regeneration responses were plated as single or mixed genotype cultures at various plating densities in replicated, randomised experiments, and the effect on the regeneration of particular cell types observed. Protoplasts from single genotype cultures showed intergenotypic variation in the extent of cell regeneration and there were significant effects of genotype mixing and density × genotype mixing interactions. Overall, the effect of mixing was beneficial to a regenerating culture but significant density genotype mixing interactions showed only a positive benefit at the lowest plating density. The protoplast mixing phenomenon was not correlated with the behaviour of the same genotypes at the plantlet level in experiments with in vitro meristem cultures.  相似文献
