草本植物的进化:解决难题的关键在于忍耐而非逃避 木本植物延续了其祖先被子植物的生长形态,而草本植物则不断地从中进化演变。虽然关于驱动草本植物习性进化的因素已有许多假设,但是通过舍弃地上生物质从而避免冬季冻害的能力常常被认为是促使其进化的主要力量。然而,鉴于草本植物在反复干扰中依旧能够轻松存活,我们提出了不可预测的干扰可能比季节性霜冻更为重要的假设。我们通过比较草本植物和木本植物应对3种模拟干扰(容易预测的冬季冰冻、不易预测的春季冰冻和食草作用)的能力来验证这一假设。通过比较20种不同植物在同质园实验中的表现,我们评估了这些干扰对植物死亡和再生方面的影响。研究结果表明,在冬季冰冻条件下,比起木本植物,草本植物在存活率上并没有优势。在不易预测的春季冰冻条件下,草本植物比木本植物的存活率更高。而在模拟食草作用的条件下,草本植物的这种生存优势更大。在不可预测的条件下,草本植物相较于木本植物的生存优势表明,草本植物的生长形式可能是对不可预测的干扰的适应,这种逆境忍耐通过其损失地上生物质也能够生存的能力得以实现。因此,哺乳动物的食草行为或火灾等原因或许最有可能是木本植物向草本植物过渡的因素。  相似文献

Conditioning, ie the adsorption of proteins and other macromolecules, is the first process that occurs in the natural environment once a surface is immersed in seawater, but no information is available either regarding the conditioning of surfaces by artificial seawater or whether conditioning affects data obtained from laboratory assays. A range of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with different chemical terminations was used to investigate the time-dependent formation of conditioning layers in commercial and self-prepared artificial seawaters. Subsequently, these results were compared with conditioning by solutions in which zoospores of the green alga Ulva linza had been swimming. Spectral ellipsometry and contact angle measurements as well as infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) were used to reveal the thickness and chemical composition of the conditioning layers. The extent that surface preconditioning affected the settlement of zoospores of U. linza was also investigated. The results showed that in standard spore settlement bioassays (45–60 min), the influence of a molecular conditioning layer is likely to be small, although more substantial effects are possible at longer settlement times.  相似文献

Amphiphilic diblock copolymers, Sz6 and Sz12, consisting of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) block (average degree of polymerisation = 132) and a PEGylated-fluoroalkyl modified polystyrene block (Sz, average degree of polymerisation = 6, 12) were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Coatings were obtained from blends of either block copolymer (1–10 wt%) with a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) matrix. The coating surface presented a simultaneous hydrophobic and lipophobic character, owing to the strong surface segregation of the lowest surface energy fluoroalkyl chains of the block copolymer. Surface chemical composition and wettability of the films were affected by exposure to water. Block copolymer Sz6 was also blended with PDMS and a 0.1 wt% amount of multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNT). The excellent fouling-release (FR) properties of these new coatings against the macroalga Ulva linza essentially resulted from the inclusion of the amphiphilic block copolymer, while the addition of CNT did not appear to improve the FR properties.  相似文献

Abnormal mechanical loading may trigger cartilage degeneration associated with osteoarthritis. Tissue response to load has been the subject of several in vitro studies. However, simple stimuli were often applied, not fully mimicking the complex in vivo conditions. Therefore, a rolling/plowing explant test system (RPETS) was developed to replicate the combined in vivo loading patterns. In this work we investigated the mechanical behavior of bovine nasal septum (BNS) cartilage, selected as tissue approximation for experiments with RPETS, under static and dynamic loading. Biphasic material properties were determined and compared with those of other cartilaginous tissues. Furthermore, dynamic loading in plowing modality was performed to determine dynamic response and experimental results were compared with analytical models and Finite Elements (FE) computations. Results showed that BNS cartilage can be modeled as a biphasic material with Young's modulus E=2.03±0.7 MPa, aggregate modulus HA=2.35±0.7 MPa, Poisson's ratio ν=0.24±0.07, and constant hydraulic permeability k0=3.0±1.3×10−15 m4 (N s)−1. Furthermore, dynamic analysis showed that plowing induces macroscopic reactions in the tissue, proportionally to the applied loading force. The comparison among analytical, FE analysis and experimental results showed that predicted tangential forces and sample deformation lay in the range of variation of experimental results for one specific experimental condition. In conclusion, mechanical properties of BNS cartilage under both static and dynamic compression were assessed, showing that this tissue behave as a biphasic material and has a viscoelastic response to dynamic forces.  相似文献

Mats of the green alga Trentepohlia, a genus widely distributed in the tropics as well as temperate regions, have always been perceived as homogeneous (i.e., formed by only one species). As such, their general nature and specific feature play a supportive role in the species delimitation. However, the presence of morphologically dissimilar thalli was observed under the light microscope and when cultivating a piece of a single mat. To address this, we performed DNA cloning of the rbcL gene on mat fragments of T. abietina, T. annulata, T. jolithus and T. umbrina sampled in Europe to reveal if they are composed of one or more species. We revealed that more Trentepohlia haplotypes may coexist in a single mat. In consideration of this, we conclude that the use of material isolated in unialgal culture will be almost mandatory for a taxonomic reassessment of this complicated genus. Another direct implication of this problem is that herbarium specimens consisting of field‐collected material should not be used for direct sequencing. We further hypothesize the reasons why multiple haplotypes of Trentepohlia occur more frequently in the tuft‐like mats. Possibly, fragments and/or cells of other microalgae, including other species of Trentepohlia, might be retained in such mats more easily than in the crustose trentepohlialean mats.  相似文献

Root sprouting in Rumex acetosella under different nutrient levels   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Growth of Rumex acetosella, a root sprouting plant, was studied in a pot experiment. Each plant of R. acetosella consisted of two ramets which were interconnected by a root about 9 cm long. One of the ramets was placed in a compartment with nutrient-rich soil, the other with nutrient-poor soil. The root connection between the ramets either remained intact or was severed at the nutrient interface after planting. Growth of new roots was prevented at the nutrient interface.The presence of a connection between the ramets did not affect biomass or shoot production in either soil compartment, indicating a poor integration of the interconnected plant systems. In the nutrient-rich environment, two to four times more shoots and biomass were produced than in the low nutrient regime. A large proportion of buds initiated on roots remained dormant, forming a bud bank. When the number of shoots or buds was expressed per g of root dry weight or per m of root length, the nutrient response was no longer evident or, in a few cases, a significant effect in the opposite direction was obtained. These results show that the greater production of buds and shoots in the nutrient-rich environment reflected an allometric relationship between root biomass and the number of buds and shoots initiated on the roots.  相似文献

We experimentally demonstrated the ability of three short-lived monocarpic species to vegetatively regenerate (resprout) from roots after severe disturbance. We assessed the relationship between resprouting ability and (1) timing of injury with respect to life-cycle stage (reproductive vs. vegetative plant), life-history mode (annual vs. winter annual) and phenological stage (flowering vs. fruiting plant), (2) nutrient availability, and (3) disturbance severity (removal of all axillary buds Yes/No). In a chamber experiment with the annual or potentially winter annualRorippa palustris, all injured plants resprouted in all nutrient levels and day-length regimes (day-length regimes simulated conditions of an annual and a winter annual cohort). The number of adventitious buds on roots was positively affected only by injury. The extent of regeneration and amount of regenerated biomass were higher at high nutrient level and long-day regime.  相似文献

Human hair morphogenesis is a dynamic process caused by the remodelling of the skin. Hair growth is cyclic in mammals consisting of three distinct stages: an active stage (anagen), a regressive stage (catagen), and a resting stage (telogen). One disorder in this process is gradual balding of the scalp called androgenetic alopecia. Little is known about the cell biological or molecular mechanisms involved and thus very little treatment is currently available. The clonal growth pattern and demography of clonal fragments (aggregation of ramets derived from a common parent ramet) in the pseudoannual plant Trientalis europaea were studied in field conditions from 1991 to 1993. During this period the population of clonal fragments declined, with a half-life of 7.4 years. Number and size of the clonal progeny and stolon length were positively related to the size of the mother ramet. Survival rates of ramets and tubers increased with size. The rate of clonal growth was low: after three years, about 70% of the clonal fragments had only one ramet. This suggests that the pseudoannual growth habit in T. europaea is more important as mechanism of perennation than of ramet multiplication.Field data were used in a simulation model of architecture and population dynamics of clonal fragments. About 10% of the clonal fragments survived to the end of the simulation (15 years) and the mean survival was 4.7 years. The model predicted a positive correlation between persistence of the clonal fragment and number of ramets produced. Sensitivity analysis showed that the production of a daughter ramet of at least the same size as the parent ramet was the most important pathway for the survival and the number of ramets of the clonal fragment, whereas the production of secondary ramets had a very small effect. This confirms the interpretation of the pseudoannual life-cycle as a mechanism of ramet replacement in this species. Sensitivity analysis also revealed that changes in survival probabilities of the smallest ramets had the largest impact on clonal fragment dynamics. This reflects the important role of the smallest size class of ramets as a source of new vegetative propagules, maintaining a hierarchy in the size structure of the population.  相似文献
