1. Through analyses of a 34‐year record of phytoplankton, zooplankton and physicochemical parameters from Lake Kinneret, Israel, we show that distinct and persistent phytoplankton assemblage states occurred from winter to summer. 2. The most obvious characteristic of these states was the presence or absence of a spring bloom of the dinoflagellate, Peridinium gatunense. 3. Analyses of the data within the framework of the alternative states model revealed a possible complex triggering mechanism, and system hysteresis. 4. A change in zooplankton biomass and body size coincident with changes in predation pressure associated with the collapse of the Kinneret Bleak, Acanthobrama terraesanctae, fishery appeared to be the ‘slow changing’ variable in the context of the alternative states model. Alternative phytoplankton states were only possible after this variable crossed a threshold in 1993–94, following the collapse of the fishery. 5. When alternative states were possible, some physicochemical parameters and the structure of the zooplankton assemblage appeared to control which phytoplankton state emerged in a given year. In years without a P. gatunense bloom, important physicochemical parameters in winter included low NO3 loading, high water temperature, high water level, a deeper thermocline, low transparency, high concentrations of NO3 and Cl in the epilimnion, and low concentration of epilimnetic total phosphorus. In addition, the cladoceran Chydorus sphaericus and adults of the copepod Mesocyclops ogunnus were observed in winter in years without a bloom. 6. Zooplankton biomass and body size of some taxa have recovered since the 1993–94 collapse of the fishery, yet incidence of both phytoplankton states in Lake Kinneret was still possible. Within the framework of the alternative states model, this suggests that the slow changing variable threshold where alternative states became possible is different from the threshold where alternative states will no longer be possible. Several species of glaphyrid (Scarabaeoidea: Glaphyridae) beetles forage and mate on Mediterranean red bowl‐shaped flowers. In red anemones and poppies in Israel, female beetles occupy only a subset of the flowers, do not aggregate, and are hidden below the petals. This raises the question of how males find their mates. In the present study, we investigated the hypothesis that males and females orient to similar plant‐generated cues, thereby increasing their mate encounter prospects. Previous studies have demonstrated that beetle attraction to red models increases with display area. Choice tests with flowers and with models indicate that both male and female beetles prefer large displays. In anemones, beetles rest, feed, and mate mainly on male‐phase flowers, which are larger than female‐phase flowers. Poppies that contain beetles are larger than the population average. These findings support the hypothesis that males and females meet by orienting to large red displays. Corolla size correlates with pollen reward in both plant species, suggesting that visits to large flowers also yield foraging benefits. Male beetles often jump rapidly among adjacent flowers. By contrast to the preference for large flowers by stationary individuals, these jump sequences are random with respect to flower sex‐phase (in anemone) and size (in poppy). They may enable males to detect females at close range. We hypothesize that males employ a mixed mate‐searching strategy, combining orientation to floral signals and to female‐produced cues. Maternal pre‐reproductive experience can impose phenotypic changes on offspring traits. These modifications may result from physiological constraints, although they can also increase the adaptation of offspring to their anticipated environment. Distinguishing between the two interpretations is often difficult. The effects of virgin female rearing density on their longevity and the characteristics of their male offspring are explored in the polyembryonic parasitoid wasp Copidosoma koehleri (Blanchard) (Encyrtidae: Hymenoptera). High rearing density may adversely affect maternal physiology or, alternatively, act as a cue for anticipated competition during the lives of the mothers and their offspring. Male offspring of group‐reared females reach pupation significantly sooner than male offspring of females reared alone. This accelerated development may provide an advantage when competition from superparasitising individuals is expected. The lifespan of high‐density females is longer than that of singly‐reared females, and their male offspring survive longer, suggesting that crowded rearing does not reduce the fitness of females or offspring. The shortened development time of male offspring may reflect an adaptive epigenetic response to predicted competitive conditions.  相似文献

Polyembryony has evolved independently in four families of parasitoid wasps. We review three main hypotheses for the selective forces favouring this developmental mode in parasitoids: polyembryony (i) reduces the costs of egg limitation; (ii) reduces the genetic conflict among offspring; and (iii) allows offspring to adjust their numbers to the quality of the host. Using comparative data and verbal and mathematical arguments, we evaluate the relative importance of the different selective forces through different evolutionary stages and in the different groups of polyembryonic wasps. We conclude that reducing the cost of egg limitation is especially important when large broods are favoured. Reducing genetic conflict may be most important when broods are small, thus might have been important during, or immediately following, the initial transition from monoembryony to polyembryony. Empirical data provide little support for the brood‐size adjustment hypothesis, although it is likely to interact with other selective forces favouring polyembryony.  相似文献

Specimens of Askenasia volvox from southwestern Indiana have a variable body shape and a size range of 29 × 22 μ m to 42 × 27 μ m. The pectinelles, membranelles, and cirri each number 47–48, and respectively have a length of 8–10, 20, and 30 μ m. The pectinelles arise from ciliary rows consisting of ~10 kinetosomes, and every membranelle originates from 2 adjacent rows of ~14–17 kinetosomes. Different algae as well as Bodo and certain other protozoa are ingested. The macronucleus, micronucleus, the cytoplasm and its inclusions, trichites, the function of the contractile vacuole, and movements and behavior are described.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Polyembryonic wasps provide dramatic examples of intra-specific developmental conflict. In these parasitoids, each egg proliferates into a clonal lineage of genetically identical larvae. If more than one egg is laid in a host (superparasitism), individuals of different clones may compete for food resources.
2. In the polyembryonic encyrtid Copidosoma koehleri , one larva per clone can differentiate into a sterile soldier. It is shown that soldiers are always females, and that they attack intra-specific competitors.
3. Research hypotheses were that (a) clones that develop in superparasitised hosts suffer heavier mortality than clones that develop in singly parasitised hosts, and (b) female clones cause higher mortality to their competitors than male clones, hence larval survival is lower in superparasitised hosts that contain females than in male-only broods.
4. The potential frequency of superparasitism in C. koehleri was manipulated by varying parasitoid–host ratios and exposure durations.
5. As parasitoid densities and exposure durations increased, the frequency of superparasitism rose, brood sizes increased, but the number of hosts that completed development was reduced. The number of offspring per parasitoid female decreased with increasing parasitoid–host ratios. Offspring size and longevity were inversely correlated with brood size. As superparasitism rates increased, fewer all-male broods were produced. Male–female broods were female-biased, suggesting selective killing of males by female soldiers. All-female broods were significantly smaller than all-male broods at high parasitoid densities only, possibly reflecting aggression among soldiers of competing clones.

Drought is the major factor limiting wheat productivity worldwide. The gene pool of wild emmer wheat, Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides , harbours a rich allelic repertoire for morpho-physiological traits conferring drought resistance. The genetic and physiological bases of drought responses were studied here in a tetraploid wheat population of 152 recombinant inbreed lines (RILs), derived from a cross between durum wheat (cv. Langdon) and wild emmer (acc# G18-16), under contrasting water availabilities. Wide genetic variation was found among RILs for all studied traits. A total of 110 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were mapped for 11 traits, with LOD score range of 3.0–35.4. Several QTLs showed environmental specificity, accounting for productivity and related traits under water-limited (20 QTLs) or well-watered conditions (15 QTLs), and in terms of drought susceptibility index (22 QTLs). Major genomic regions controlling productivity and related traits were identified on chromosomes 2B, 4A, 5A and 7B. QTLs for productivity were associated with QTLs for drought-adaptive traits, suggesting the involvement of several strategies in wheat adaptation to drought stress. Fifteen pairs of QTLs for the same trait were mapped to seemingly homoeologous positions, reflecting synteny between the A and B genomes. The identified QTLs may facilitate the use of wild alleles for improvement of drought resistance in elite wheat cultivars.  相似文献

VARIOUS types of cells release an inducer for the formation of colonies in vitro with mature differentiated macrophages and granulocytes from single normal undifferentiated haematopoietic cells1–8. Using purified inducer from a cloned line of mouse fibroblasts, we have shown that this induction requires a protein (MGI) with a molecular weight of 65–70,000 and a low molecular weight co-factor, both secreted by the fibroblasts9. Adenine or adenine-containing nucleotides can substitute for the co-factor9,10. We have also shown that non-purified conditioned medium produced by human cells can induce undifferentiated cells from patients with acute myeloid leukaemia to differentiate into mature granulocytes11.  相似文献

Studies of Bergmann's rule may encompass a non-random subsample of extant homeotherms. We examined patterns of correlation between skull length and geographical latitude in 44 species of carnivores in order to test the validity of Bergmann's rule in the Carnivora. Results were then compared to those of other studies. Significant positive correlation between skull length and latitude was found in 50% of carnivore species, while significant negative correlation was found in only 11% of species. These results indicate that the occurrence of Bergmann's rule in the Carnivora is less frequent than earlier published data suggest. Publication bias is not detected in published data. Therefore, previous studies of geographical size variation might be biased in favour of species known to follow Bergmann's rule.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 81 , 579–588.  相似文献
