Cold storage is one means of preserving parasitoids prior to release in augmentation biological control programs. This study examined the feasibility of storing larval and pupal stages of a sexual population of Lysiphlebus fabarum Marshall (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) at 6 ± 1 and 8 ± 1 °C, 50–60% r.h., and L14:D10 photoperiod. These life stages were stored for periods of 1, 2, and 3 weeks under fluctuating thermal regimes (2 h daily at 21 ± 1 °C). Generally, pupae gave better results than larvae, and 6 °C was better than 8 °C, considering wasp survival, wasp size (tibial and antennal lengths), egg load, and egg size. The best results were obtained with pupae stored for 2 weeks under a fluctuating temperature regime at 6 °C. Females emerging from this treatment did not differ from controls (developing directly at 21 °C) in body size, egg size, or progeny sex ratio, and suffered less than 20% mortality. Egg loads were reduced in these wasps, but the reductions were substantially less than occurred in other 2‐week‐storage treatments. Wasps stored in this manner successfully parasitized similar numbers of aphids as controls and produced similar progeny sex ratios. These results reveal a suitable set of low‐temperature conditions that can be used to delay the development of L. fabarum for 2 weeks with minimal impact on wasp fitness.  相似文献

In recent years, the application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) has been considered to be an important strategy for improving crop yield and quality. In the present study, a factorial experiment based on a complete randomized design with two factors was performed to investigate the effect of AMF and water stress on the essential oil (EO) composition, antioxidant activity, and physiological and morphological characteristics of rose-scented geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L.). The factors included AMF inoculation (Rhizophagus intraradices, Funneliformis mosseae, and a mixture of both species) and irrigation levels [well-watered (WW), moderate drought stress (MDS), and severe drought stress (SDS)]. The main EO constituents were citronellol (31–37%) and geraniol (9–14%) in all treatments. Under water-stress conditions, some constituents increased, such as geraniol and geranyl formate, whereas others decreased, such as linalool, menthone and rose oxide. Overall, the highest amount of citronellol (37.3%) and geraniol (14.8%) was obtained in the plants inoculated with F. mosseae and R. intraradices under WW and MDS conditions, respectively. Antioxidant activity, total flavonoids, and phenolics were increased because of AMF inoculation, whereas a different trend was observed for the phenolic and flavonoid contents under water-stress conditions. Furthermore, water deficit elevated the amount of soluble carbohydrates as well as the proline content, whereas the amount of proline was lower in inoculated plants than in non-inoculated ones. All the growth parameters were improved in the AMF-inoculated plants compared to non-inoculated ones under different irrigation regimes. Drought conditions decreased the photosynthetic pigments and efficiency, whereas AMF plants ameliorated the adverse effect of drought conditions. In general, mycorrhizal inoculation resulted in an improvement in the growth parameters as well as the phytochemical and physiological characteristics of rose-scented geranium.

This study was conducted to investigate biodenitrification efficiency with starch‐stabilized nano zero valent iron (S‐nZVI) as the additional electron donor in the presence of S2O3 in aqueous solutions, under anaerobic conditions. The main challenge for nZVI application is their tendency to agglomeration, thereby resulting in loss of reactivity that necessitates the use of stabilizers to improve their stability. In this study, S‐nZVI was synthesized by chemical reduction method with starch as a stabilizer. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, XRD, and FTIR. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image shows S‐nZVI has a size in the range of 5–27.5 nanometer. Temperature and S‐nZVI concentration were the important factors affecting nitrate removal. Biodenitrification increased at 35°C and 500 mg/L of S‐nZVI, in these conditions, biodenitrification efficiency increased from 40.45 to 78.84%. Experimental results suggested that biodenitrification increased by decreasing initial nitrate concentration. In the bioreactor biodenitrification rate was 94.07% in the presence of S‐nZVI. This study indicated that, Fe2+ could be used as the only electron donor or as the additional electron donor in the presence of S2O3 to increase denitrification efficiency.  相似文献

Recently, bacterial cellulose (BC) based wound dressing have raised significant interests in medical fields. However, to our best knowledge, it is apparent that the BC itself has no antibacterial activity. In this study, we optimized graphene oxide‐silver (GO‐Ag) nanohybrid synthesis using Response Surface Methodology and impregnate it to BC and carefully investigate their antibacterial activities against both the Gram‐negative bacteria Escherichia coli and the Gram‐positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. We discover that, compared to silver nanoparticles, GO‐Ag nanohybrid with an optimal GO suspension's pH and ratio is much more effective and shows synergistically enhanced, strong antibacterial activities at rather low dose. The GO‐Ag nanohybrid is more toxic to E. coli than that to S. aureus. The antibacterial and mechanical properties of BC/GO‐Ag composite are further investigated.  相似文献

A novel desulfurizing bacterium has been isolated from oil-contaminated soils in Khuzestan. The ability for dibenzothiophene desulfurization and its biochemical pathway were investigated. The bacterium was identified as Gordonia sp. AHV-01 (Genbank Accession No HQ607780) by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. HPLC results and Gibb's assay were shown that dibenzothiophene desulfurized via 4S-pathway Maximum growth (0.426 g dry cells/L) and produced 2-hydroxybiphenyl (63.1 microM) were observed at 120 h of cultivation. By using of response surface design procedure the optimization of pH, temperature and rotary shaker round on the desulfurization reaction of isolate AHV-01 were performed. The optimum conditions were determined at pH of 7.0, temperature of 30 degrees C and rotary shaker round of 180 rpm. At these conditions, the dibenzothiophene desulfurization activity was increased and maximum 2-hydroxybiphenyl production was detected 70.29 microM at 96 h. According to these results, Isolate AHV-01 was capable to desulfurize dibenzothiophene via 4S-pathway and likely it can be useful to reduce organic sulfur contents of crude oil.  相似文献

Insects have evolved amazing methods of defense to ward off enemies. Many aphids release cornicle secretions when attacked by predators and parasitoids. These se cretions contain an alarm pheromone that alerts other colony members of danger, thereby providing indirect fitness benefits to the releaser. In addition, contact with cornicle se cretions could also threaten an attacker and could provide direct fitness to the releaser. However, cornicle secretions may also be recruited as a kairomonal cue by aphid natural enemies. In this study, we investigated the effect of the cornicle droplet volatiles of the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), on the hostsearching behavior of naive and experienced female Diaeretiella rapae (M'Intosh) parasitoids in olfactometer studies. In addition, we evaluated the role ofB. brassicae cornicle droplets on the oviposition prefer ence of the parasitoid in a twochoice bioassay. Naive females did not exhibit any preference between volatiles from aphids secreting cornicle droplets over nonsecreting aphids, while experienced parasitoids exploited the secretions in their host location. Experienced females were also able to choose volatiles from both secreting and nonsecreting aphids over clean air, while this ability was not observed in naive females. Although secretion of cornicle droplets did not influence the percentage of first attack in either naive or experienced females, the success of attack (i.e. resulting in a larva) was significantly different between secreting and nonsecreting aphids in the case of experienced parasitoids.  相似文献

This study examined the feeding habits of Nephus arcuatus Kapur (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), an important predator of mealybugs in south-western Iran. The consumption capacity of male and female N. arcuatus adults was determined by their feeding on eggs, first-instar nymphs, and adult females of two destructive mealybugs, Nipaecoccus viridis (Newstead) and Planococcus citri Risso, over a 24-h period. N arcuatus consumed significantly more first-instar nymphs than eggs, and more eggs than female adults of both prey species. In addition, we also studied the developmental stage prey preference of adults reared on either N. viridis or P. citri and found that the prey preference of females did not change with the developmental stage of the mealybug. Meanwhile, the males reared on either N. viridis or P. citri showed a significant preference for the first-instar nymphs of P. citri over first-instar nymphs of N. viridis, while a preference for the eggs or adult females of these two mealybugs was not observed. This selection of first-instar nymphs by males was not tied to its previous feeding experience. Our findings suggest that prey stage, prey size and previous feeding experience had no effect on the prey selection of N. arcuatus, making it a good candidate for the biological control of mealybugs.  相似文献

Stress induced by water deficit is considered to be a global problem and one of the most important factors limiting crop production in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. Application of certain microorganisms, including arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), is considered to be an effective and sustainable strategy to mitigate the problem. A pot experiment was conducted in the field (from Feb. to Sep. in 2013–2014 in Isfahan, Iran) to assess the effectiveness of AMF inoculation on changes in biomass, essential oils, nutrient uptake and water-use efficiency of rose geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L.) experiencing stress induced by a deficit of water. The experiment was planned as a factorial experiment, using a completely randomized design, with two factors, including four AMF inoculation (non-mycorrhizal, Rhizophagus intraradices and Funneliformis mosseae inoculated, and the combination of both species) and three irrigation levels including well-watered (WW), moderate water deficiency (MWD) and severe water deficiency (SWD). The results indicated the occurrence of an adverse effect of water deficit on plant total biomass; however, AMF inoculation positively increased plant biomass compared to the non-inoculated ones under three irrigation levels. MWD condition resulted in higher essential oil (EO) content (12.4 %), water-use efficiency (WUE) (29.5 %) and glomalin-related soil proteins (GRSP) (19.1 %) in the plants compared to WW condition. Furthermore, all AMF inoculation improved EO content by at least 12 k%. The results also showed that severe water deficiency adversely affected the uptake of most nutrients by plants especially in non-inoculated plants. The results also revealed that, although EO production was under the control of irrigation regime, nutrient uptake was critically dependent on an association with mycorrhizae. Notwithstanding the fact that rose geranium can tolerate moderate drought stress, the high responsiveness of rose geranium to AMF under water deficiency stress confirms the key role of AMF in facilitating the production of this valuable crop in harsh environments. Dual infection of rose geranium with two AMF species could also synergistically affect biomass, essential oil content and mineral elements absorption.  相似文献

This study tested effects of maternal body size on foraging behavior and progeny development in a thelytokous population of Lysiphlebus fabarum (Marshall) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Small and large wasps were reared from first and second instar hosts [black bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scopoli (Hemiptera: Aphididae)], respectively, and each was provided with a patch (bean leaf disk) containing either 15 small (second instar) or 15 large (fourth instar) hosts for a 30‐min foraging period. Neither body size nor host size affected time allocation to various behaviors within a patch, but second instar aphids produced significantly more mummies than fourth instars. The preferred attack orientation was from the side of the aphid, suggesting wasps were sensitive to the risk of smearing with cornicle secretions. Few wasps developed in fourth instar hosts, suggesting later host instars were somewhat resistant to parasitism. Second instar hosts, the most suitable stage for L. fabarum development, relied more on defensive behavior, specifically kicking and secreting cornicle droplets. Large wasps were more likely to elicit a double cornicle secretion, indicating that aphids graded their response to the size of the attacker. Larger wasps were also more likely to be smeared with cornicle secretion, suggesting they were more vulnerable than small wasps. Although small wasps had smaller eggs than large wasps, there was no effect of maternal egg size on the size of progeny. However, daughters of small females emerged with larger egg loads than daughters of large mothers, and their eggs tended to be slightly smaller, although not significantly. Regression analysis revealed a positive correlation between maternal egg size and progeny developmental time for small and large wasps, and between maternal egg size and progeny egg load for small wasps. These results confirm maternal effects of body size in an aphid parasitoid, and reveal that vulnerability to host behavioral defenses is also body size dependent.  相似文献

The broad-spectrum insecticides greatly influence the control of cotton aphids; however, due to frequent chemical control, Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae) has developed resistance against several classes of synthetic insecticides. In this study, we explored the sub-lethal effects of imidacloprid and pirimicarb, two commonly used insecticides for aphid control, on a parasitoid wasp, Lysiphlebus fabarum (Marshall) (Braconidae: Aphidiinae), when simultaneously used to control melon aphid on cucumber plants, as part of a comprehensive study for integrated pest management. Bioassays of imidacloprid and pirimicarb were performed to calculate LC50 with third instars of A. gossypii. The LC50 of these insecticides (110.55 and 250.89 μg/lit, respectively) were used to expose the wasp larvae, pupae, and adult parasitoids on a cucumber leaf. The percent mortality, percent adult emergence, and sex ratio were calculated during each exposure test. Moreover, the body size, egg load, and mature egg size of wasps surviving the insecticide treatments, as well as the sex ratio of the second generation was evaluated. Regardless of the host aphid mortality, none of the insecticides caused mortality of larval stage of the parasitoid. The insecticide application on pupal stage revealed that the percentage of mortality, sex ratio, body size, and egg load of surviving wasps, as well as the sex ratio of their offspring was adversely affected by imidacloprid, but not by pirimicarb. The present study suggests pirimicarb as a preferred insecticide, with less harmful effects on the fitness components of L. fabarum, for integrated pest management of cotton aphids.  相似文献
