The concentrations of a number of elements are determined in the plasma and erythrocytes of 21 Nigerians (11 females, 10 males)
with symptomatic affective disorders (11 depressives, 10 manics) and in 40 normal controls using proton-induced X-ray emission
(PIXE) analysis. The study shows that there is significant elevation of plasma K and Zn, as well as the erythrocyte S in the
patients relative to the controls. The plasma and erythrocyte Cu, and the erythrocyte P, Ca, Fe, and Zn are significantly
lower in the patients compared to the controls. However, the plasma levels of Ca, S, Fe, and Br are similar in both the patients
and the controls. Similarly, the concentrations of K, Br, and Rb show no significant difference in the erythrocytes of patients
and controls. 相似文献

Study of trace elements in blood of cancer patients by proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis
Durosinmi M. A. Ojo J. O. Oluwole A. F. Akanle O. A. Spyrou N. M. 《Biological trace element research》1994,(1):351-355
Proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis was employed to determine the concentrations of six elements in the plasma and
erythrocytes of 18 cancer subjects (15 males and 3 females) with neoplastic disorders and in 70 controls (35 males and 35
females). It was found that the concentrations of Br, K, and Zn were significantly elevated in the erythrocytes of the cancer
subjects compared to the controls, whereas the concentration of Fe was significantly depressed, but with no difference observed
in the concentration of Ca. In the plasma, the concentrations of Br, Cu, Ca, and K were significantly elevated, whereas the
concentrations of Fe and Zn were found to be significantly depressed compared to the controls. 相似文献

IntroductionThe burden of HPV-related Head and Neck Cancers (HNC) has been rising in the U.S. and other developed countries but this trend has not been reported in Africa. Objective of study was to evaluate the prevalence of HPV infection in HNC cancer cases seen between 1990 and 2011 at the tertiary health care institutions in Nigeria.MethodsWe retrieved 149 head and neck cancer formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tumor specimens diagnosed between 1990 and 2011 from four teaching hospitals in Nigeria. One hundred and twenty-three blocks (83%) contained appropriate HNC for analysis while DNA extraction was successful in 60% (90/149). PCR amplification was successful in 33% (49/149) and Linear Array genotyping for HPV was successful in 11% (17/149) of these cases. These were in tumors from the larynx (6), cervical lymph nodes (3), nasal cavity (2), parotid (1), palate (1), maxillary sinus (1) and mandible (1). Two cases were non-specific and none were from the oropharynx. Histologically, 41% (7/17) of the successfully genotyped blocks were squamous cell carcinomas (larynx 6, maxillary sinus 1).
Results and Conclusion
We were unable to detect HPV in any of the HNC samples in our study. Our result may suggest that there is a low prevalence of HPV-related HNC among the adult population in Nigeria. Our results provide a benchmark to compare future incidence of HPV -related HNC in this community in future. We had significant analytical challenges from possible poor tissue processing and urge that future studies should prospectively collect samples and ensure high quality sample processing. 相似文献5.

BACKGROUND: The IgG autoantibody ANNA-2 (anti-Ri) is a type 2 antineuronal antibody that has been found to bind to highly conserved and widely distributed adult brain proteins encoded by the Nova-1 and Nova-2 genes. Anti-Ri antibodies are typically detected in the serum and cerebrospinal fluids of patients with neurological disorders such as opsoclonus/myoclonus and cerebellar ataxia and in association with gynecologic and breast malignancies. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes an unusual example of a 33-year-old female patient who developed short-term memory deficits over a 3-month period. An extensive neurological work-up, including a panel of paraneoplastic markers was negative with the exception of a high titer serum Anti-Ri (1:15,3600). A large left ovarian mass was palpated, surgically resected and eventually diagnosed as a mature cystic teratoma. Post-operatively, memory deficits had disappeared within 1 month and serum Anti-Ri titers had decreased significantly to 1:256. An extensive diagnostic work-up for other malignancies was negative. CONCLUSION: Although, Anti-Ri antibodies are typically associated with malignancies, this case illustrates the potential association between benign tumors and this autoantibody. 相似文献

Mutations in transporters associated with antigen processing (TAP-1 and -2) required for the transport of cytosolic endogenous peptides to the endoplasmic reticulum correlate with increased metastatic potential and reduced host survival in several malignancies. To address the possible function of TAP as a "tumor suppressor" gene, we show that correction of TAP-1 and/or TAP-2 defects in B16 mouse melanoma enhanced the cell surface expression of MHC class I molecules and significantly reduced the rate of subcutaneous tumor growth and pulmonary metastatic burden. Cytotoxic assays confirmed increased sensitivity of TAP-1 and/or TAP-2 transfected clones of B16 melanoma to cytotoxic T lymphocytes. These results indicate that the expression of TAP limits the malignant potential of tumors with implications for CD8(+) T cell-based immunotherapy in controlling growth of certain TAP-deficient malignancies. 相似文献

Research is a global enterprise requiring participation of both genders for generalizable knowledge; advancement of science and evidence based medical treatment. Participation of women in research is necessary to reduce the current bias that most empirical evidence is obtained from studies with men to inform health care and related policy interventions. Various factors are assumed to limit autonomy amongst the Yoruba women of western Nigeria. This paper seeks to explore the experience and understanding of autonomy by the Yoruba women in relation to research participation. Focus is on factors that affect women's autonomous decision making in research participation. An exploratory qualitative approach comprising four focus group discussions, 42 in‐depth interviews and 14 key informant interviews was used. The study permits a significant amount of triangulation, as opinions of husbands and religious leaders are also explored. Interviews and discussions were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. Content analysis was employed for data analysis. Findings show that concepts of autonomy varied amongst the Yoruba women. Patriarchy, religion and culture are conceived to have negative impact on the autonomy of women in respect to research participation. Among the important findings are: 1) male dominance is strongly emphasized by religious leaders who should teach equality, 2) while men feel that by making decisions for women, they are protecting them, the women on the other hand see this protection as a way of limiting their autonomy. We recommend further studies to develop culturally appropriate and workable recruitment methods to increase women's participation in research. 相似文献
