Abstract The flux of individuals within populations is dependent upon six controlling processes: the intrinsic rate of increase of the plant, intraspecific competition for resources, interspecific competition, natural enemies, mutualisms and refuge effects such as the immigration of seeds from other populations. Although population interactions are generally believed to play a major role in determining the flux of individuals within populations, little attempt has been made to quantify the strength of these interactions and their role in the dynamics of populations. In this paper we examine the role of competition, herbivory and mutualistic interactions in determining the dynamics of a range of annual plant species. Firstly, it is shown that the dynamics of three weed species ( Bromus sterilis, Galium aparine, Papaver rhoeas ) in an experimental community in an arable cropping system of winter wheat are determined primarily by the rapid population growth of B. sterilis . Interactions between the species play a minor part in the dynamics of the system. Secondly, it is shown that current levels of grazing by overwintering populations of brent geese have a minor impact on the abundance of Salicornia europaea , but that increased grazing has the potential to reduce abundance and increase the instability of S. europaea populations. This is a consequence of the aggregative response of the geese, which results in an increasing proportion of the seeds of S. europaea being eaten as plant density increases. Thirdly, it is shown that there is a complex interaction between root pathogenic and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in natural field populations of Vulpia ciliata and that the benefit of mycorrhizal fungi to the plant is in providing protection against pathogens.  相似文献

Plants ofLolium perenne, grown with and without the balansoidfungal leaf endophyteNeotyphodium lolii, were exposed to threeultraviolet radiation treatments at an outdoor facility in theUK for 172 d. Plants were exposed to either (a) a 30% elevationabove the ambient erythemally-weighted level of UV-B (280–315nm) radiation under banks of cellulose diacetate filtered fluorescentlamps that also produce UV-A (315–400 nm) radiation (UV-B+A);(b) elevated UV-A radiation alone under banks of polyester filteredlamps; or (c) ambient levels of solar radiation under banksof unenergized lamps. The fertility of plants grown withN. loliiwassignificantly reduced by the elevated UV-B+A exposure. After172 d, these plants produced 70% fewer spikes, 75% fewer seeds,71% lower total weight of seed and 78% fewer seeds per g d.wt of plant tissue than plants colonized byN. loliiwhich wereexposed to ambient radiation. There was no discernible effectof elevated UV-B+A exposure on the fertility of endophyte-freeplants. Plants irradiated with UV-B+A developed 14% thickerleaves than those exposed to ambient radiation. Those whichwere irradiated with elevated UV-A alone produced seeds thatwere 20% heavier than plants exposed to ambient levels of radiation.Plants grown withN. loliihad 7% thicker leaves, 4% thicker stembases and 7% fewer tillers than those grown without it. Thefresh mass of tillers of plants grown withN. loliiwas 11% greaterthan those of endophyte-free plants, owing to their higher moisturecontents. Responses of plants in polar regions to UVB exposure: a meta-analysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We report a meta‐analysis of data from 34 field studies into the effects of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation on Arctic and Antarctic bryophytes and angiosperms. The studies measured plant responses to decreases in UVB radiation under screens, natural fluctuations in UVB irradiance or increases in UVB radiation applied from fluorescent UV lamps. Exposure to UVB radiation was found to increase the concentrations of UVB absorbing compounds in leaves or thalli by 7% and 25% (expressed on a mass or area basis, respectively). UVB exposure also reduced aboveground biomass and plant height by 15% and 10%, respectively, and increased DNA damage by 90%. No effects of UVB exposure were found on carotenoid or chlorophyll concentrations, net photosynthesis, Fv/Fm or ΦPSII, belowground or total biomass, leaf mass, leaf area or specific leaf area (SLA). The methodology adopted influenced the concentration of UVB absorbing compounds, with screens and natural fluctuations promoting significant changes in the concentrations of these pigments, but lamps failing to elicit a response. Greater reductions in leaf area and SLA, and greater increases in concentrations of carotenoids, were found in experiments based in Antarctica than in those in the Arctic. Bryophytes typically responded in the same way as angiosperms to UVB exposure. Regression analyses indicated that the percentage difference in UVB dose between treatment and control plots was positively associated with concentrations of UVB absorbing compounds and carotenoids, and negatively so with aboveground biomass and leaf area. We conclude that, despite being dominated by bryophytes, the vegetation of polar regions responds to UVB exposure in a similar way to higher plant‐dominated vegetation at lower latitudes. In broad terms, the exposure of plants in these regions to UVB radiation elicits the synthesis of UVB absorbing compounds, reduces aboveground biomass and height, and increases DNA damage.  相似文献

The influence of three organic compounds and bakers' dry yeast on growth of external mycelium and phosphorus uptake of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices Schenck & Smith (BEG 87) was examined. Two experiments were carried out in compartmentalized growth systems with root-free sand or soil compartments. The sand and soil in the root-free compartments were left untreated or uniformly mixed with one of the following substrates (0.5 mg g−1 soil): bakers' dry yeast, bovine serum albumin, starch or cellulose. Effects of the organic substrates on biomass and hyphal length density of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus were examined by using specific fatty acid signatures in combination with direct microscopy. Micro-organisms other than the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus were measured by fatty acid signatures, and radioactive 33P labelling of the root-free soil was used to determine arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphal phosphorus uptake. In general, hyphal growth of G. intraradices was enhanced by yeast and bovine serum albumin, whereas the carbon sources, starch and cellulose, depressed fungal growth. By analysing the fatty acid 16:1ω5 from phospholipids (indicating mycelium) and neutral lipids (indicating storage structures) it was shown that increased fungal growth due to yeast was mainly in vegetative hyphae and less in storage structures. Arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphal phosphorus uptake was decreased by cellulose, but unaffected by the other substrates compared with the control. This means that both growth and phosphorus transport by the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus were decreased under cellulose treatment. However, the composition of the microbial community varied under different substrate conditions indicating a possible interactive component with arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphal growth and phosphorus uptake.  相似文献

We quantified the metabolic cost to the Antarctic leafy liverwort Cephaloziella varians of responding to an abrupt increase in ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation exposure in the natural environment at Rothera Point on the western Antarctic Peninsula (67 °34'S, 68 °07'W). The liverwort was protected from exposure to UVB radiation for 44 days with screens containing Mylar polyester, after which time its thalli, which are normally black in colour, had become green owing to reduced concentrations of an anthocyanidin, identified here as riccionidin A, in thallus tips. Thalli were then exposed to an abrupt increase in UVB radiation by removing the screens. The thalli became visibly darker within 48 h of the screens being removed, resynthesizing riccionidin A to the same concentration as that present in thalli outside screens during this period. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements indicated that nonphotochemical quenching was higher in the thalli formerly under the screens than in those not previously covered with screens, but that F v/ F m and photochemical quenching were the same in the two groups of thalli. We used data from aqueous phase oxygen electrode measurements to calculate an estimate for carbon fixation by C. varians during the 48 h after the screens were removed. Assuming a photosynthetic quotient for Antarctic bryophytes of 1, these analyses indicated that the minimum weight of carbon used to synthesize riccionidin A was equivalent to 1.85% of the carbon fixed by thalli during the 48 h after the abrupt increase in UVB radiation exposure.  相似文献

Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) leaf litters from 15 woodlands exposed to a broad range of ambient sulphur dioxide (SO2) concentrations were fumigated with environmentally realistic concentrations (ll-20nmol mol?1) of SO2, for 166 d in an open-air fumigation experiment. Fumigation of the sycamore litters significantly increased sulphate-S and proton leaching, and decreased calcium, magnesium and potassium concentrations in leachates and leaf tissues. Leaf litters from relatively unpolluted woodlands showed a tendency to lose higher amounts of sulphate-S, calcium, magnesium and nitrate-N in leachates than litters from polluted sites when exposed to elevated levels of SO2 in treatment plots. Fumigation inhibited the decomposition rates (CO2 evolution) of the leaf litters. Marked changes in the composition of the saprotrophic fungal communities in SO2-fumigated leaf litters were also recorded, but fungal communities and responses to SO2, were similar between woodlands. There was no evidence from our data to suggest that resistance to SO2, was developed in decomposer mycofloras in woodlands more frequently polluted by the gas.  相似文献

Appropriate controls in outdoor UV-B supplementation experiments   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Quercus robur L. saplings were exposed in an outdoor experiment to supplemental levels of UV-8 (280–315 nm) radiation using treatment arrays of cellulose diacetate-filtered fluorescent lamps that also produce UV-A (315–400 nm) radiation. Saplings were also exposed to UV-A radiation alone using control arrays of the same lamps filtered with polyester and to ambient levels of radiation, using arrays of unenergized lamps. The UV-B treatment was modulated to maintain a 30% elevation above the ambient level of UV-B radiation, measured by a broad-band sensor weighted with an erythemal action spectrum. Saplings exposed to UV-B radiation beneath treatment arrays developed thicker leaves than those beneath ambient and control arrays. Despite the fact that supplemental levels of UV-A radiation were only a small percentage of ambient levels, apparent UV-A effects were also recorded. Significant increases in sapling height, lammas shoot length and herbivory by chewing insects were observed under treatment and control arrays, relative to ambient, but there were no differences between the responses of saplings under treatment and control. These data imply that supplemental UV-A radiation or other effects associated with energised lamps can significantly affect plant growth parameters and herbivory in outdoor studies. We conclude that the results from current outdoor UV-B supplementation experiments that lack control exposures using polyester-filtered lamps need to be interpreted with caution and that future supplementation experiments should include appropriate controls.  相似文献
