A re-appraisal of two members of the genus Notholca from the Andes,with a note on the fine structure of the lorica of N. foliacea (Ehrenberg)

Rotifers described from the Andes by Murray (1913) and De Beauchamp (1939) as Notholca foliacea (Ehrenberg) are reviewed and re-assessed as Notholca walterkostei De Paggi, 1982. They are compared with N. foliacea and details of the lorica of this species seen with the scanning electron microscope are presented.     

A short history of western European rotifer research

The course of rotifer research in western Europe including Denmark and the British Isles is traced from its commencement at the end of the seventeenth century to the middle of the twentieth. The development of each discipline involved — taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, phylogenetic relationships, histology, embryology and ecology — is examined in an historical context.     

Cephalodella edax. sp. nov. A rotifer parasitic in the motile colonial alga Uroglena volvox Ehrenberg

A monogonont rotifer found parasitizing colonies of the motile alga Uroglena volvox Ehrenberg in two north English lakes is described as a new species. Diagnostic taxonomic details are given together with remarks on other rotifers known to occur in motile colonies of algae.
