Most studies comparing biodiversity between natural and human-modified landscapes focus on patterns in species occurrence or abundance, but do not consider how different habitat types meet species' breeding requirements. Organisms that use or nest in tree cavities may be especially threatened by habitat conversion due to the loss of their nesting sites. Although cavity-nesting bird diversity is highest in the tropics, little is known about how tropical birds use cavities, how agriculture affects their reproductive biology, and how effective nest boxes could be as a conservation strategy in tropical agriculture. Here, we explored how habitat conversion from tropical forests to pasture affects the abundance, nesting habitat availability, and nest success of cavity-nesting birds in Northwest Ecuador. We conducted bird surveys and measured natural cavity availability and use in forest and agriculture. We also added artificial nest boxes to forest and agriculture to see whether cavity limitation in agriculture would elicit higher use of artificial nest boxes. We found evidence of cavity limitation in agriculture—there were many more natural cavities in forest than in agriculture, as well as more avian use of nest boxes placed in agriculture as compared to forest. Our results suggest that it is important to retain remnant trees in tropical agriculture to provide critical nesting habitat for birds. In addition, adding nest boxes to tropical agricultural systems could be a good conservation strategy for certain species, including insectivores that could provide pest-control services to farmers. The conformation of the head-to-tail cyclic analogue of bradykinin in DMSO was investigated by nmr. Three sets of resonances were detected and fully assigned. These were attributed to the presence of three stable conformers, two of which were exchanging on the nmr time scale. A fourth, incomplete set of resonances was detected but not assigned. The three major conformers differ in the conformation at the three X-Pro bonds present. From nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY) spectra, three sets of interproton distances were derived and used in NOE-restrained distance geometry calculations. The resulting structures were refined by energy minimization to yield families of structures. Conformer I is characterized by the presence of two type VIb β-turns between Arg1 and Gly4 and between Phe5 and Phe8. The first β-turn is present also in conformer II, while an inverse γ-turn bridging Pro3 is the most pronounced structural feature of conformer III. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Bombolitins are five structurally related heptadecapeptides acting at the membrane level able to lyse erythrocytes and liposomes and to enhance the activity of phospholipase A 2(PLA2). In the presence of SDS or phospholipid vesicles bombolitins are able to form amphiphilic α-helical structures and this property seems to be the major determinant of bioactivity. In order to test the model of interaction between bombolitin I and membranes, an analogue was synthesized in which all the lysines were replaced by arginines: ([Arg2,9,12, Ile10] bornbolitin I). The design ofthis sequence allowed the synthesis of a second analogue through a specijic postsynthetic dansylation at the ?-amino group qf a lysine residue replacing the original leucine residue at position 7. The, first analogue was, fiilly characterized by CD and two-dimensional nmr in the presence of SDS or phospholipid vesicles. The peptide, folds into an amphiphilic α-helical confbrrnation with the helical segment spanning the central part of the sequencefrom Ile3 to His16. This behavior is identical to that observed for the native sequence. The replacement of Iysine residues by arginine hus no detectable effect on the conformational prderence of the peptide chain. By CD and fluorescence spectroscopy measurements, the fluorophore-containing analogue [Arg2,9,12, Lys7(?-dansyl)] bombolitin I also folded into the α-helical conformation in the presence of SDS micelles or phospholipid vesicles. In particular, the dansyl fluorophore, which is located approximately in the middle of the apolar surface ojthe amphiphilic helix, is clearly buried in a hydrophobic environment when the peptide is bound to phospholipid vesicles. These findings support the hypothesis that the peptide helices are oriented parallel to the vesicle surface. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Background

The peer review system has been traditionally challenged due to its many limitations especially for allocating funding. Bibliometric indicators may well present themselves as a complement.

Objective

We analyze the relationship between peers’ ratings and bibliometric indicators for Spanish researchers in the 2007 National R&D Plan for 23 research fields.

Methods and Materials

We analyze peers’ ratings for 2333 applications. We also gathered principal investigators’ research output and impact and studied the differences between accepted and rejected applications. We used the Web of Science database and focused on the 2002-2006 period. First, we analyzed the distribution of granted and rejected proposals considering a given set of bibliometric indicators to test if there are significant differences. Then, we applied a multiple logistic regression analysis to determine if bibliometric indicators can explain by themselves the concession of grant proposals.

Results

63.4% of the applications were funded. Bibliometric indicators for accepted proposals showed a better previous performance than for those rejected; however the correlation between peer review and bibliometric indicators is very heterogeneous among most areas. The logistic regression analysis showed that the main bibliometric indicators that explain the granting of research proposals in most cases are the output (number of published articles) and the number of papers published in journals that belong to the first quartile ranking of the Journal Citations Report.

Discussion

Bibliometric indicators predict the concession of grant proposals at least as well as peer ratings. Social Sciences and Education are the only areas where no relation was found, although this may be due to the limitations of the Web of Science’s coverage. These findings encourage the use of bibliometric indicators as a complement to peer review in most of the analyzed areas.  相似文献

Trichoderma has been used to manage a large number of pathogens, but there is a gap in the mechanisms used by these biocontrol agents regarding the physiological response of cassava plants (Manihot esculenta) when it is subjected to cassava root rot. The aims of this study were to investigate the antagonist activity of ten Trichoderma isolates against Fusarium solani on potato dextrose Agar (PDA), to quantify the chitinase production, to select and test in vivo the best isolate from each experiment and to assess the physiological response of cassava to the production of oxidative enzyme complex production (ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase). All Trichoderma isolates have shown competitive capability against F. solani, and Trichoderma hamatum URM 6656 showed the highest inhibition of pathogen growth (88.91%). All isolates have shown chitinase activity, but Trichoderma aureoviride URM 5158 produced the highest amount of chitinase. T. hamatum URM 6656 and Taureoviride URM 5158 were selected to be applied in vivo. The two Trichoderma strains reduced 64 and 60% of the disease severity in the shoot and 82 and 84% in the root. Cassava plants infected with Trichoderma have shown the highest peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase production. Our results have indicated that T. aureoviride URM 5158 is an effective biocontrol agent against cassava root rot caused by F. solani, because it presented competitive antagonist capability in vitro, the highest chitinase production, and reduced the cassava root rot severity. The application of T. aureoviride has led to the maximum enzyme activity of reactive oxygen species group in cassava plants.  相似文献

Personal exposure meters for assessing exposure to RF electric or magnetic fields are subject to errors associated with perturbations of the fields by the presence of the human body. Although these alterations are complex they are not completely unpredictable. This article concludes that this error in a common worst-case scenario could reach up to 30 dB and therefore is of concern for exposure assessment. We present several guidelines to address this issue and a useful insight into the overall problem based on finite-difference time-domain simulations and experimental verification.  相似文献

The effect of water temperature during the development of fish larvae on sex differentiation is well known, but not so well known is the impact of the daily thermocycles. Our aim was to investigate the effect of early exposure of Senegal sole larvae to different temperature cycles on gonad development, sex ratio, and sex steroid (11-ketotestosterone (11-KT); estradiol (E(2) ); and testosterone, (T)) content in muscle extracts of juveniles. From 1 to 97 days posthatching (DPH) fish larvae and post-larvae were subjected to three temperature regimes: Thermophase-Cryophase (TC), Cryophase-Thermophase (CT), and constant temperature. In fish exposed to TC, sex determination occurred earlier, because 90% of soles were males/females at 110 DPH, whereas 45% of fish under CT were undifferentiated at that time. Fish under TC showed the highest growth rates, followed by fish under constant temperature and by fish under CT, the differences being statistically significant between the TC and CT groups. Regarding sex ratio, juveniles exposed to TC showed a higher proportion of females than fish under CT or constant temperature. Under TC, fish showed the highest concentration of E(2) , whereas 11-KT concentration was highest in fish under CT and constant temperature. Fish under constant temperature and CT showed higher T levels than those under TC. These results provide the first insights into the effect of daily thermocycles on sex differentiation in fish, and underline the key role of natural environmental cycles on the control of sex ratios during larval development, which may be applied to the manipulation of sex ratio in aquaculture.  相似文献
