Using the swimbladder of the crusian carp ( Carrasius auratus ) as an inductor, the first appearance of mesodermal competence in the presumptive ectoderm of the newt ( Triturus pyrrhogaster ) blastula was investigated. The time course of embryonic development before the gastrula stage was determined by counting the number of surface cells on a 0.25 mm line at the animal pole. Pregastrula embryos with 2–3, 4–5, 6–7 and 7–8 cells roughly correspond to those at 14, 14–12, 8–6 and 4–0 hr before the beginning of gastrulation. Using presumptive ectoderm of the early gastrula stage, 15 min was found to be the minimum time of contact necessary for the realization of induction. The reactivity of the presumptive ectoderm from pregastrula embryos was tested by 30 min contact. Presumptive ectoderm up to the 4–5 cell stage did not react to the inductor. It may become competent within the next 4–8 hr, since the ectoderm from embryos in the 6–7 cell stage was reactive.  相似文献

Sentoku, A. & Ezaki, Y. 2011: Constraints on the formation of colonies of the extant azooxanthellate scleractinian coral Dendrophyllia arbuscula. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 62–70. Scleractinia display a variety of growth forms, whether zooxanthellate or azooxanthellate, as the consequence of the combined effects of both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. New modules arise in colonial corals through asexual reproduction, including budding and division. The azooxanthellate, branching dendrophylliid Dendrophyllia arbuscula van der Horst 1922 , is a good species to investigate intrinsic regularities in budding, because: (1) the lateral corallites always occur in the vicinity of four primary septa, excluding the two directive primary septa; (2) the two directive septa in lateral corallites tend to be oriented almost perpendicular to the growth orientation of parental corallites; (3) the lateral corallites grow more‐or‐less diagonally upwards; and (4) these regularities are retained from the axial to the derived lateral corallites during colony growth. Accordingly, a colony of apparently complex dendroid corals is formed according to certain universal rules that apply to successive generations of corallites. The presence of two opposite sectors in which budding do not occur seems to be common to other azooxanthellate scleractinian families. Regularities, other than the orientation of the directive septa, are also commonly found at least in other azooxanthellate dendrophylliid genera. These regularities suggest the presence of strict developmental constraints on the asexual reproduction of the Scleractinia, both extant and extinct. These regularities by azooxanthellate scleractinians, as one of the representative colonial metazoan groups, provide us with fundamental data with which we can understand how colonies are constructed. □Azooxanthellate coral, budding, colony, Dendrophyllia arbuscula, regularity.  相似文献

Because of their highly ordered structure, mature viroid RNA molecules are assumed to be resistant to degradation by RNA interference (RNAi). In this article, we report that transgenic tomato plants expressing a hairpin RNA (hpRNA) construct derived from Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) sequences exhibit resistance to PSTVd infection. Resistance seems to be correlated with high-level accumulation of hpRNA-derived short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) in the plant. Thus, although small RNAs produced by infecting viroids [small RNAs of PSTVd (srPSTVds)] do not silence viroid RNAs efficiently to prevent their replication, hpRNA-derived siRNAs (hp-siRNAs) appear to effectively target the mature viroid RNA. Genomic mapping of the hp-siRNAs revealed an unequal distribution of 21- and 24-nucleotide siRNAs of both (+)- and (–)-strand polarities along the PSTVd genome. These data suggest that RNAi can be employed to engineer plants for viroid resistance, as has been well established for viruses.  相似文献

Microscopic studies were made on the localizations of three different cytoskeletal proteins, actin, vinculin and fibronectin, in the duodenum of developing chick embryos and chicks by an indirect immuno-fluorescent staining method with specific antibodies.
Topographical changes in the distributions of these three proteins seemed to be related to stages in morphogenesis of the duodenum. In early stages of embryonic development, findings suggested interaction between actin and vinculin in the apical region of epithelial cells and between actin and fibronectin in the basal region of these cells. From this stage, vinculin and fibronectin seemed to be of importance in determination and continuity of the polarity of the duodenal epithelium, and in control of the intracellular arrangement of actin. This relation between actin and vinculin seemed to continue throughout embryogenesis.
The main role of actin in epithelial cells seemed to change on day 12 from that of forming constricting bundles for morphogenesis of previllous ridges to that of microfilaments in the microvilli and the terminal web.  相似文献
