In this study, linear and mass attenuation coefficients of fabricated particleboards intended for use as phantom material were estimated using 137Cs and 60Co radiation sources. Particleboards made of Rhizophora spp. wood trunk bonded with soy flour and lignin were fabricated at a target density of 1.0 g cm?3, with and without gloss finish coating. Elemental composition of the particleboards was obtained by means of energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Experimental setups were simulated via the GATE Monte Carlo (MC) package, with particle histories of 1?×?106–1?×?107. Linear and mass attenuation coefficients obtained from measurements and GATE simulations were compared and discussed. The percentage differences between the measured and simulated linear and mass attenuation coefficients of the samples were reasonably small (2.05–4.88% for 137Cs and 3.24–5.38% for 60Co). It is shown that all the particleboards have the potential to be used as phantom materials as the attenuation coefficients measured were in good agreement with those of water (calculated with XCOM) and with those simulated with the GATE toolkit. The use of gloss finish coating also did not show any significant effect on the attenuation coefficient of the phantom material. Verification of experimental results via GATE simulations has been shown crucial in providing reliable data for energy transmission studies. Based on the results achieved in this study, it is concluded that the studied material—Rhizophora spp. wood trunk bonded with soy flour and lignin including gloss finish coating—can be used in radiation dosimetry studies.

Nowadays, allelopathic investigations have focused to identify action mechanisms of this compounds on target organisms in natural habitats. It may tend to introduce new natural herbicides and pesticides for replacing the synthetic ones. In the present study, the allelopathic effects of thymol on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) as a model plant were investigated in physiological and biochemical aspects. At the first stage, the effect of different concentrations of thymol on some growth parameters, including seed germination, radicle and plumule growth were evaluated to determine the optimum concentration for the continuation of our experiment. Then, the lettuce seedlings were cultured in pots containing peat and were irrigated with Hoagland nutrient solution supplemented with thymol at the concentration of 50 and 100 μg/mL. The effect of these treatments on physiological, biochemical aspects of the plant were studied following the plant growth. The results showed whereas, the shoot fresh and dry weights and photosynthetic rate in the treated group were decreased significantly compared to the control group at P ≤ 0.05, photochemical efficiency of photosystem II, total protein concentration, proline content and the activity of some antioxidant enzymes such as polyphenol oxidase, ascorbate peroxidase and catalase were increased in treated plants than control ones. However, there was no significantly change in chlorophyll content in treated group than control. It can be concluded that the thymol as an allelochemical caused some physiological and biochemical responses in the lettuce which are much similar to induced responses under abiotic stress. Indeed, it induces a kind of stress named as allelochemical stress.  相似文献

Cytotoxic, phytotoxic, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects of quercetin 3-O-glucoside (Q3G) isolated by HPLC from aerial parts of Prangos ferulaceae was studied by MTT assay, lettuce germination assay, disk diffusion and DPPH method. Our results showed that Q3G exhibits high antioxidant effect with RC50 of 22 μg/mL, it has low cytotoxicity and no antibacterial effects. Q3G exhibits high phytotoxic effect with IC50 value of 282.7 μg/ml, as well. It is assumed that Q3G does not play a defense role in plants and it may act as an allelopatic agent. BackgroundThis dosimetric study compared lateral wedge with medial only cardiac shielding (LEMONADE) technique, for left chest wall (LCW) irradiation against three other commonly used techniques.Materials and methodsDosimetric parameters of 22 consecutive LBC patients treated using the P1 (LEMONADE technique) were compared with 3 other virtually reconstructed plans : no cardiac shielding with paired wedges; P2 (paired wedges and medial only Y-direction shielding) and P3 (paired wedges and bilateral Y-direction shielding).ResultsP1 showed better target volume (TV) coverage with the mean 90% isodose coverage of 85.59% ± 5.44 compared to 78.90% ± 8.59 and 74.22% ± 9.50 for P2 and P3, respectively. Compared to no cardiac shielding, for a 4.65% drop in TV coverage the V26Gy of heart dropped from 6.68% to a negligible 0.85% for P1. TV receiving < 30Gy is also significantly lesser for P1 compared to P2 and P3 (5.42% vs 10.64% and 15.8%), whilst there is a small difference of 2.75% between no cardiac shielding and P1.ConclusionWith the improvement in BC survival rate, cardiac toxicity associated with adjuvant irradiation for LBC is a major concern. P1 (LEMONADE) technique has a good compromise between cardiac sparing and target coverage and should suffice for most LCW irradiations. Furthermore, the LEMONADE technique is a simple, reproducible and involves fast planning for cardiac sparing, which is ideal for under-resourced departments with heavy workload.  相似文献

Brachytherapy (BT) is an important local treatment of tumor and it can be applied to different anatomical sites either in a curative or palliative setting. BT can deliver large dose of radiation to the tumor while sparing the surrounding normal tissue which translates into a better therapeutic ratio compared to external beam radiotherapy. However, the evidence for the use of brachytherapy in the palliative setting is lacking in the literature. In this case report, we describe the brachytherapy technique and outcome of a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx who underwent palliative brachytherapy to the hypopharynx and metastatic tumor at the right axilla.  相似文献

Patterns of modern human population structure are helpful in understanding the history of human migration and admixture. We conducted a study on genetic structure of the Malay population in Malaysia, using 54,794 genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism genotype data generated in four Malay sub-ethnic groups in peninsular Malaysia (Melayu Kelantan, Melayu Minang, Melayu Jawa and Melayu Bugis). To the best of our knowledge this is the first study conducted on these four Malay sub-ethnic groups and the analysis of genotype data of these four groups were compiled together with 11 other populations' genotype data from Indonesia, China, India, Africa and indigenous populations in Peninsular Malaysia obtained from the Pan-Asian SNP database. The phylogeny of populations showed that all of the four Malay sub-ethnic groups are separated into at least three different clusters. The Melayu Jawa, Melayu Bugis and Melayu Minang have a very close genetic relationship with Indonesian populations indicating a common ancestral history, while the Melayu Kelantan formed a distinct group on the tree indicating that they are genetically different from the other Malay sub-ethnic groups. We have detected genetic structuring among the Malay populations and this could possibly be accounted for by their different historical origins. Our results provide information of the genetic differentiation between these populations and a valuable insight into the origins of the Malay sub-ethnic groups in Peninsular Malaysia.  相似文献
