The objective of the present work was to describe the simultaneous changes in endogenous levels of cytokinins, abscisic acid, indoleacetic acid and ethylene in detached, senescing tobacco (Nicotiana rustica L.) leaves. These measurements were related to changes in chlorophyll contents, 14CO2 fixation and proline contents — three parameters which have been considered to reflect senescence. Effects of exogenous hormonal treatments on these parameters, as well as on endogenous hormonal levels, provided further evidence for the interrelationships between hormones and for their roles in senescence. Starting with actively growing attached leaves and ending with well-advanced senescence in detached leaves, our data indicate a chronological sequence of three hormonal states: (a) cytokinins — high activity, abscisic acid, auxin and ethylene — low contents (actively growing, attached leaves); (b) cytokinins — low activity, abscisic acid — high, auxin and ethylene — low contents (apparent induction of senescence in detached leaves); and (c) cytokinins and abscisic acid — low, auxin and ethylene — high contents (senescence proper in detached leaves).  相似文献

Attachment surfaces of ostreids preserve the (negative) imprint of the substrate morphology while the right (upper, free) valve may reflect its positive form (xenomorphism or xenomorphic sculpture). The substrate may be an invertebrate skeleton which is dissolved during diagenesis. The imprint of such skeletons on ostreid valves has often a greater biostratigraphic significance than the ostreid itself. Fossil examples are described.  相似文献

The Great White Pelican Pelecanus anocrotalus is the largest migrating bird in Israel and is an endangered species. The Palearctic populations of the Great White Pelican breed in eastern Europe and Asia and most of them pass through the ‘bottleneck’ of Israel to wintering grounds in Africa. Natural feeding sites for pelicans have diminished during recent decades due to human activities, and sites of extensive aquaculture have become the favourite feeding places for wintering and migrating Great White Pelicans. The fish industry has reported a significant impact on fish yield and the conflict between pelicans and fishermen has escalated so that hundreds of pelicans have died in recent years from shooting or accidental electrocution. We approached this management problem by studying the energy requirements of the Great White Pelican during migration and while wintering in Israel, under different feeding regimes (fish or chicks) and in different seasons, in captivity. The results show that a captive bird consumes 1.1 kg of fish per day. The basal metabolic rate and apparent metabolized energy of the Great White Pelican are both higher than predicted from allometric equations. Energetic demands were quite stable on both diets (fish and chicks) and during both seasons (winter and summer). The fat deposits of migrating pelicans averaged 313.5 g compared with 480 g in wintering birds (3.4% and 5.4% of body mass, respectively). Based on these fat contents and on the measured daily energy consumption, we calculated that birds that do not feed in Israel can fly only up to 1620 km from Israel southward and could not cover the distance to their likely wintering grounds in the Sudd area in southern Sudan. However, birds that replenish their fuel reserves could fly up to 2460 km and hence could reach this area. Therefore, we conclude that Great White Pelicans must feed in Israel during the autumn migration in order to complete their journey to Africa. One solution to the conflict between pelicans and fishermen could be to combine deterrents preventing pelicans from feeding in fish‐ponds with the provision of attractive alternative reservoirs, to ensure regular food supplies during autumn.  相似文献

Positive phototaxis was demonstrated in specimens of Amphistegina radiata within the range of photonic fluxes of 1011 to 1015 photons × cm-2× sec-1. No response was found at lower intensities. Amphistegina radiata has a Dartnall nomogram-shaped action spectrum with a peak at ~500 nm. In addition, A. radiata and A. madagascariensis, which had been maintained at 18 C, moved toward higher temperatures in a horizontal temperature gradient in total darkness. Amphistegina radiata and A. madagascariensis did not move at temperatures ≤ 12 C and ≤ 16 C respectively. An equal number of specimens moved toward the higher and lower temperatures in the gradient when A. radiata was placed at ~29 C and A. madagascariensis at ~22 C. The roles of light and temperature in the distribution of the genus Amphistegina in nature are discussed.  相似文献

The Corbulidae, which today are slow, cumbersome, very shallow burrowers, developed special morphological features by which they obtained an outstanding capability to withstand the physical and biological stresses characteristic of their preferred habitat. These features are: an inequivalve, globose shape, thick shells, and conchiolin layers (at least one) embedded within their valves in a unique way. These features enable the corbulids to close their valves tightly during the unfavourable environmental conditions (e.g. low salinity, low oxygen content) which may prevail in the marginal marine regions inhabited by several corbulid species. The conchiolin layers act as a barrier preventing all chemically boring organisms from penetrating into the bivalve shell, or shell dissolution by sea water undersaturated with respect to calcium carbonate. The layered conchiolin weakens the shell mechanically, however, especially during fossilization, when the conchiolin is decomposed. The valve splits apart into two shells so completely different in appearance that they may be attributed to different taxa. The conchiolin layers are therefore of great ecological and palaeontological significance. The nature of these conchiolin layers in Corbula (Varicorbula) gibba (Olivi) is described and illustrated and their functional significance discussed in relation to other living and fossil corbulid species.  相似文献

U.v. radiation significantly lowers the IAA level in frondsof Spirodela oligorhiza. Fronds grown in the light on mediumsupplemented with sucrose had much higher IAA levels than frondsgrown on medium lacking sucrose. The results suggest that u.v.-inducedabscission in Spirodela and the reduction of abscission by sucroseare both related to their effect on endogenous IAA levels.  相似文献

The Role of Abscisic Acid in Senescence of Detached Tobacco Leaves   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The role of abscisic acid in the regulation of senescence was investigated in detached tobacco leaves (Nicotiana rustica L.). Leaves senesced in darkness showed a sharp rise in abscisic acid level in the early stage of aging, followed by a rapid decline later. The same trend was found when leaves were aged in light, but the rise in abscisic acid occurred four days later than in darkness. Senescence was slower in light than in darkness, while salt stress accelerated the processes. Leaves treated with kinetin which senesced in light and darkness, did not show an increase in abscisic acid. Application of kinetin led to a transformation from free to bound ABA. These results may indicate that ABA and cytokinin are involved in a trigger mechanism which regulates senescence; the stage at which this trigger is activated determines the rate of senescence.  相似文献
