Cannibalism is known to be a significant source of natural mortality of young North-east Arctic (NEA) cod. Cannibalism data, starting from 1984, have been used in NEA cod stock assessments since 1995, which has led to inconsistency in the cod abundance time series from 1946 to the present. To address this inconsistency, this study estimates the cannibalism-induced mortality (M2) of NEA cod at age 3–5 for the period 1946–1983. Combined qualitative and quantitative cod stomach content data for 1984–2010 were used to make the M2 estimations for age groups 3–5 (ICES 2014), then different factors including SSB were used to examine which covariates explained variability in M2 and thus make predictions for 1946–1983. The level of cannibalism was estimated to be high in the 1950s – early1960s. VPA-based assessment was run using these estimated M2 values. As a result, numbers of cod eaten by their conspecifics in the historical period and new increased recruitment estimates at age 3 were computed. The main factors affecting cannibalism appeared to be young cod abundance, total stock biomass (TSB) of large cod, and capelin total stock biomass (which represents an alternative prey). The problems involved in using the new recruitment time series in fishery management are discussed. The methodology presented here represents a generic approach to extending predation mortalities back in time to improve historical stock estimates.  相似文献

The results obtained mainly by the author and coworkers are summarized. One efficient method to detect free radicals in biological samples is chemiluminescence (CL). In the absence of activators CL of membraneous systems is due to lipid peroxide free radicals, whereas in the presence of luminol it is initiated by oxygen radicals. Low levels of free radicals in the cells and blood plasma are maintained by antioxidants, enzymes included. Ferrous ions increase free radical concentrations in the cells and tissues. Deleterious action of hydroxyl radicals is the result of the breakage of DNA strains and of lipid peroxidation (LPO). The latter reaction brings about the damage of the membrane barriers due to a decrease of the electrical stability of the membrane lipid bilayer and "self-breakdown" of the membranes by potential differences produced in the living cells.  相似文献

The cleavable homobifunctional reagent dichloro[N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-aminoethyl)-1,6-hexamethylenediamminedi platinum (II)] dichloride was used for studying rRNA-protein cross-links in free 35S-labelled 70 S ribosomes and within initiation complex ribosome.AUGU6.fMet-tRNA(fMet). It was shown that the sets of proteins cross-linked to 16 S and 23 S rRNA in free 70 S ribosomes and in 70 S initiation complex do not differ significantly. The authors are the first to demonstrate most of the 23 S rRNA-protein cross-links and some 16 S rRNA-protein cross-links, in particular those with L7/L12 protein.  相似文献

Affinity labelling of E. coli ribosomes with the 2',3'-O-[4-(N-2-chloroethyl)-N-methylamino]benzylidene derivative of AUGU6 was studied within the initiation complex (complex I) obtained by using fMet-tRNAMetf and initiation factors and within the pretranslocational complex (complex II) obtained by treatment of complex I with the ternary complex Phe-tRNAPhe.GTP.EF-Tu. Both proteins and rRNA of 30 S as well as 50 S subunits were found to be labelled. Sets of proteins labelled within complexes I and II differ considerably. Within complex II, proteins S13 and L10 were labelled preferentially. On the other hand, within complex I, multiple modification is observed (proteins S4, S12, S13, S14, S15, S18, S19, S20/L26 were found to be alkylated) despite the single fixation of a template in the ribosome by interaction of the AUG codon with fMet-tRNAMetf.  相似文献

In somatic hybrids between tumourous Nicotiana tabacum (B6S3) and normal mesophyll Atropa belladonna cells, the following traits, directly or indirectly connected with T-DNA gene expression and tumourous growth, were analysed: lysopine dehydrogenase activity (LpDH), shoot suppression, root suppression, ability to grow on media with D-lactose as a sole carbon source and resistance to 2-aminoethylcysteine, 5-bromodeoxyuridine and 5-methyltryptophan. Human erythrocytes were incubated for 5 h at 37 degrees C with lipoproteins (LP), preliminary oxidized to different extent, as assessed by thiobarbituric acid (TBA) test. Cholesterol content in the cells was increased by 12-14% after incubation with low-density lipoproteins (LDL) along with augmentation of order parameter and rotational correlation time of spin-labeled stearic acids incorporated into membranes. If erythrocytes were incubated with oxidized LDL, containing 2.5-4 times more TBA-reactive material than native ones, cellular content of cholesterol was increased by 24-28%. In contrast, high-density lipoproteins (HDL2 and HDL3) removed cholesterol from cell membranes, when incubated with erythrocytes. This was followed by increased fluidity of membrane lipid phase as detected by the spin probe method. Oxidation of HDL2 and HDL3 decreased their ability to accept cholesterol from cell membranes. No detectable accumulation of TBA-reactive material was observed in the samples during the incubation. The antioxidant, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), in the concentration of 10(-5) M did not influence the cholesterol transfer between LP and erythrocytes. Hence, the effects of lipid peroxidation (LPO) on the cholesterol transfer seem to result from LP alterations by oxidation rather than from free radical reactions occurring during the incubation. By increasing cholesterol-donating ability of LDL and inhibition of cholesterol-accepting capacity of HDL lipid peroxidation in LP may activate cholesterol accumulation in blood vessel cells and thus contribute to atherosclerosis.  相似文献
