Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are widely used to regulate indoor temperature and air quality of modern buildings. The central supply and exhaust system cause the dispersal and removal of bioaerosols. This study presents results from ex situ experiments conducted to a better understanding of the spatiotemporal distribution, passive dispersal and removal of fungal spores through HVAC systems. The study was conducted in a 50 square meters by 3 m high instrument room in a research building with HVAC systems. Plates with Aspergillus flavus colony were attached upside down on the edge of the ceiling vent to imitate the mildew growing. Fungal spores were released for 10 min, collected and counted by the settle plate method in 2 h. Results show that A. flavus spores dispersed to 3.6 m in 2 min and were evenly distributed in the room within 8 min. The concentration of spores decreased from 48 to 3–6 CFU/plate after 60 min and was lower than 1% after 120 min. Our results suggest that airborne fungal spores disperse and remove by HVAC systems efficiently. Without the external and internal source, the HVAC system could greatly reduce the fungal amount in the indoor air to the background level within one hour. This study provided the observed data of the transmission and retention of internal or external biological contaminants through HVAC system.

From the studies on the involvement of iNOS in arthritis, it is clear that attention has focused primarily on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). To date, little is known about the role of iNOS in the pathophysiology of gouty arthritis (GA). Here, we investigated the significance of iNOS expression in cell culture system as well as in GA patients. Gouty crystals monosodium urate (MSU) appeared to up-regulate inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA and protein expression in a concentration- and time-dependent manner in RAW264.7 macrophages. This increase of iNOS expression is attributable to the activation of multiple signaling pathways. Evidence for this was initially established by inhibitor treatment of cells in the presence of MSU. While the JAK inhibitor AG490, the PI3K inhibitor LY294002, and the NFkappaB inhibitor PDTC abrogated almost completely the expression of iNOS induced by MSU, the ERK1/2 inhibitor PD98059 was only partially effective. Furthermore, the effect of MSU on the activation of PI3K/Akt, JAK/STAT, ERK1/2, and NFkappaB signaling molecules was carefully examined. Moreover, it was shown that GAS and NFkappaB motifs are required for iNOS expression mediated by MSU. In addition, synovial tissues obtained from GA patients displayed enhanced expression of iNOS when compared with normal synovium. Taken together, these findings provide the first evidence for the potential importance of iNOS in the pathogenesis of GA as well as RA and OA, and in turn raise the possibility that iNOS may be an ideal target for preventive therapy in human arthritis.  相似文献

BackgroundMonitoring of fetal heart rate (FHR) is important during labor since it is a sensitive marker to obtain significant information about fetal condition. To take immediate response during cesarean section (CS), we noninvasively derive FHR from maternal abdominal ECG.MethodsWe recruited 17 pregnant women delivered by elective cesarean section, with abdominal ECG obtained before and during the entire CS. First, a QRS-template is created by averaging all the maternal ECG heart beats. Then, Hilbert transform was applied to QRS-template to generate the other basis which is orthogonal to the QRS-template. Second, maternal QRS, P and T waves were adaptively subtracted from the composited ECG. Third, Gabor transformation was applied to obtain time-frequency spectrogram of FHR. Heart rate variability (HRV) parameters including standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN), 0V, 1V, 2V derived from symbolic dynamics of HRV and SD1, SD2 derived from Poincareé plot. Three emphasized stages includes: (1) before anesthesia, (2) 5 minutes after anesthesia and (3) 5 minutes before CS delivery.ResultsFHRs were successfully derived from all maternal abdominal ECGs. FHR increased 5 minutes after anesthesia and 5 minutes before delivery. As for HRV parameters, SDNN increased both 5 minutes after anesthesia and 5 minutes before delivery (21.30±9.05 vs. 13.01±6.89, P < 0.001 and 22.88±12.01 vs. 13.01±6.89, P < 0.05). SD1 did not change during anesthesia, while SD2 increased significantly 5 minutes after anesthesia (27.92±12.28 vs. 16.18±10.01, P < 0.001) and both SD2 and 0V percentage increased significantly 5 minutes before delivery (30.54±15.88 vs. 16.18±10.01, P < 0.05; 0.39±0.14 vs. 0.30±0.13, P < 0.05).ConclusionsWe developed a novel method to automatically derive FHR from maternal abdominal ECGs and proved that it is feasible during CS.  相似文献
