Social selection is presented here as a parallel theory to sexual selection and is defined as a selective force that occurs when individuals change their own social behaviors, responding to signals sent by conspecifics in a way to influence the other individuals' fitness. I analyze the joint evolution of a social signal and behavioral responsiveness to the signal by a quantitative-genetic model. The equilibria of average phenotypes maintained by a balance of social selection and natural selection and their stability are examined for two alternative assumptions on behavioral responsiveness, neutral and adaptive. When behavioral responsiveness is neutral on fitness, a rapid evolution by runaway selection occurs only with enough genetic covariance between the signal and responsiveness. The condition for rapid evolution also depends on natural selection and the number of interacting individuals. When signals convey some information on signalers (e.g., fighting ability), behavioral responsiveness is adaptive such that a receiver's fitness is also influenced by the signal. Here there is a single point of equilibrium. The equilibrium point and its stability do not depend on the genetic correlation. The condition needed for evolution is that the signal is beneficial for receivers, which results from reliability of the signal. Frequency-dependent selection on responsiveness has almost no influence on the equilibrium and the rate of evolution. 相似文献

Summary In-situ hybridization experiments have been performed using isoactin ( and )-specific riboprobes in various tissues of the rat and mouse. Distribution of the grains of actin mRNAs for both and types was similar throughout sections of the rat testis. Although both mRNAs were evenly distributed in the seminiferous tubule, extremely heavy labeling was observed in about 10% of the seminiferous tubules that could be identified as stage XII of spermatogenesis. At high magnification, grains of the mRNA were found in the cytoplasm of elongating spermatids and in the Sertoli cell cytoplasm at the adluminal side. Much higher density of the grains of mRNA was observed in the neck region of the spermatids at stage XII. Thus, the dense distribution of cytoskeletal actin mRNAs is stage-specific in the tubule during spermatogenesis in the rat. The high expression of both and actin mRNAs was also observed in the epithelial cells of the intestinal crypts. 相似文献

Realized heritabilities were estimated for the character of phenthoate resistance in two local strains of the diamond-back moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae), by performing artificial laboratory selection for resistance and susceptibility to phenthoate. Heritability estimates indicated that such traits are moderately heritable (
2=0.42 and 0.41 in the resistant selection and
2=0.31 and 0.21 in the susceptible selection), and give an experimental basis accounting for rapid evolutionary changes of phenthoate resistance observed in field populations of this insect.The observed changes in variances of phenthoate susceptibility are discussed in relation to the additive genetic variance eliminated by directional selection. The explanation stresses the importance on the underlying genetic system.
Résumé L'héritabilité de la résistance au phenthoate obtenue chez deux souches locales de P. xylostella L. (Lep.; Yponomeutidae) a été calculée en procédant au laboratoire à des sélections artificielles pour la résistance et pour la sensibilité à cet insecticide. Les calculs de l'héritabilité ont montré que de tels caractères sont moyennement héritables ( 2=0,42 et 0,41 lors de la sélection pour la résistance, et 2=0,31 et 0,21 lors de la sélection pour la sensibilité), et ont fourni la base expérimentale rendant compte des changements évolutifs rapides observés pour la résistance au phenthoate chez des populations naturelles de cet insecte.Les changements observés de la variance de la sensibilité au phenthoate sont discutés en fonction de la variance génétique additive éliminée par la sélection orientée. The cellular 300 kDa protein known as p300 is a target for the adenoviral E1A oncoprotein and it is thought to participate in prevention of the G0/G1 transition during the cell cycle, in activation of certain enhancers and in the stimulation of differentiation pathways. In order to determine the exact function of p300, as a first step we constructed a simple assay system for the selection of a potential target site of a hammerhead ribozyme in vivo. For the detection of ribozyme-mediated cleavage, we used a fusion gene (p300-luc) that consisted of the sequence encoding the N-terminal region of p300 and the gene for luciferase, as the reporter gene. We were also interested in the correlation of the GUX rule, for the triplet adjacent to the cleavage site, with ribozyme activity in vivo. Therefore, we selected five target sites that all included GUX The rank order of activities in vitro indeed followed the GUX rule; with respect to the kcat, a C residue as the third base (X) was the best, next came an A residue and a U residue was the worst (GUC > GUA > GUU). However, in vivo the tRNA(Val) promoter-driven ribozyme, targeted to a GUA located upstream of the initiation codon, had the highest inhibitory effect (96%) in HeLa S3 cells when the molar ratio of the DNA template for the target p300 RNA to that for the ribozyme was 1:4. Since the rank order of activities in vivo did not conform to the GUX rule, it is unlikely that the rate limiting step for cleavage of the p300-luc mRNA was the chemical step. This kind of ribozyme expression system should be extremely useful for elucidation of the function of p300 in vivo. 相似文献

Summary A squamous cell carcinoma cell line Nakata proliferated in serum-free culture and was not responsive to exogenous fibroblast
growth factor-1 (FGF-1). Immunostaining revealed that Nakata cells expressed FGF-1 in their cytoplasms and nuclei. Two molecular
mass species of FGF-1 (16 and 18 kDa) were identified in cell extracts by Western blot. These cells also expressed high-affinity
FGF-1 binding sites (Kd=360 pM, 28 000 sites/cell). The results of cross-linking with [125I]FGF-1 demonstrated the presence of two bands with molecular masses of 160 and 140 kDa. The addition of FGF-1 specific antisense
oligonucleotides at 25 μM to Nakata cells resulted in an 82% inhibition in cell growth and suppressed FGF-1 expression. This effect was dose-dependent
and specific, because sense oligonucleotides were ineffective in inhibiting cell growth. In addition, Nakata cell growth was
suppressed by an anti-FGF-1 neutralizing antibody, which resulted in a 52% inhibition at 8 μg/ml. These results demonstrate
that Nakata cells produce FGF-1, and indicate that this growth factor acts in an autocrine manner by interacting with FGF-1

To analyze whether prolactin (PRL) in human follicular fluid (FF) is synthesized locally or derived from the circulation, PRL concentrations of plasma and FF were determined in the patients after ovarian stimulations. The amounts of PRL messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) in the follicular tissues during different menstrual phases were also determined. The FF PRL concentration was correlated positively with plasma PRL and highest estradiol levels during the stimulatory cycle. No PRL mRNA sequence was detected in the RNAs extracted from follicles at any stage in the menstrual cycle, although beta-actin mRNA was detected in all samples. In a comparison with pituitary RNA, the PRL mRNA concentration in ovarian follicular tissues seemed to be 10,000 times less than that in the pituitary. These results suggest that FF PRL may not be synthesized locally, but derived from the pituitary via the circulation through passive diffusion, and thus regulated by estrogen. 相似文献

Right nodular goiter with diffuse miliary shadow on chest roentgenogram was found in a postpartum febrile woman. Transbronchial lung biopsy revealed tuberculous granuloma and acid-fast bacilli were found by aspiration cytology of the thyroid. Although chemotherapy was effective, the thyroid nodule remained palpable and the serum thyroglobulin level remained high. Subtotal thyroidectomy revealed papillary carcinoma associated with tuberculosis and lymph nodes metastasis. This seems to be the first case report of a patient with tuberculous thyroiditis, coexisting with thyroid carcinoma, diagnosed by aspiration cytology and treated prior to surgery. 相似文献
