The uptake of ammonium, nitrate and phosphate by laboratory-grown young sporophytes of Laminaria abyssalis was measured in a perturbed system (batch mode) at 18 °C and 35 ± 5 µE m–2 s–1 photon flux density. Uptake of all appeared to follow saturation-type nutrient uptake kinetics. The NO inf3 sup– (K s = 14.0 µM, V max = 5.0 µmol h–1 g–1 dry wt) and NH inf4 sup+ (K s = 4.6 µM, V max= 2.0 µmol h–1 g–1 dry wt) were taken up simultaneously, although NH inf4 sup+ was taken up more rapidly. Values of K 3 and V max for phosphate were, respectively, 2.21 µM and 0.83 µmol h–1 g–1 dry wt. Nitrate and phosphate were both consumed in similar rates (V max /Ks 0.37) at low concentrations. NH inf4 sup+ , thus, might be a more efficient form of N fertilizer if artificial enrichment of seawater is used.  相似文献

Photosynthetic light‐response curves of the deep‐water Laminaria abyssalis Oliveira and of the intertidal L. digitata Lamoroux were determined and related to photoinhibition phenomena as monitored by oxygen evolution and photosystem II efficiency (FV/FM). L. abyssalis has half the pigment content, number of cells and plastids, and photosynthetic capacity per unit area compared with L. digitata. L. abyssalis showed a higher in vivo Chl a absorption coefficient and higher photosynthetic efficiency on a Chl a basis, although the two algae showed somewhat similar light‐response curves on a Chl a basis. Both species showed similar Chl a/Chl c and Chl a/fucoxanthin ratios, and similar dark respiration rates and light compensation points. In addition, they also showed similar convexities in their light‐response curves and no differences in their light saturation of FV/FM. Room temperature chlorophyll fluorescence induction measurements of fronds incubated in 3‐(3,4‐dichlorophenyl)‐1,1‐dimethylurea (DCMU) suggest that both species may have a similar PSII absorption cross section. Thus, L. abyssalis appears to optimize its light absorption at very low light intensities, not by increasing the pigment content, but by absorbing light more efficiently. However, L. abyssalis was more sensitive to photoinhibition than L. digitata and showed no recovery of FV/FM and O2 evolution after a photoinhibitory treatment, even with a subsequent exposure to 24 h of dim light. L. digitata, on the other hand, recovered its photosynthetic capacity within 6 h under dim light. These results suggest that photosynthetic light‐induction curves based on Chl a are not a good indicator of either the photosynthetic capacity or the sensitivity to photoinhibition when macroalgae of different species are being compared. Based on their light‐response and photoinhibition characteristics, we suggest that L. abyssalis, a deep‐water oceanic macroalgae, is an atypical shade alga whereas L. digitata has the properties of a sun alga.  相似文献

Antifouling activity is one poorly investigated property of seaweed natural products. To determine, in the field, whether seaweeds contain chemicals able to influence the settlement of fouling organisms, crude organic extracts from Stypopodium zonale, Dictyota menstrualis (Phaeophyceae) and Laurencia obtusa (Rhodophyceae) were incorporated at natural volumetric concentrations, into hard stable gels that served as substrata for fouling in the experiments. Fouling organisms settled at a significantly higher rate on plates treated with S. zonale extracts than on control gels, while settlement was strongly inhibited on gels containing L. obtusa extracts. Fouling on gels treated with the D. menstrualis extract was not significantly different from the fouling found on control gels. The findings suggest that the broad antifouling properties of the crude extract of L. obtusa inhibit the settlement of fouling as well as hinder the development of settled fouling species, thereby reducing the richness of species. The results imply that L. obtusa possibly harbours powerful agents that can be explored for the development of antifouling technology.  相似文献

The marine areas of South America (SA) include almost 30,000 km of coastline and encompass three different oceanic domains--the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the Atlantic--ranging in latitude from 12°N to 55°S. The 10 countries that border these coasts have different research capabilities and taxonomic traditions that affect taxonomic knowledge. This paper analyzes the status of knowledge of marine biodiversity in five subregions along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America (SA): the Tropical East Pacific, the Humboldt Current,the Patagonian Shelf, the Brazilian Shelves, and the Tropical West Atlantic, and it provides a review of ecosystem threats and regional marine conservation strategies. South American marine biodiversity is least well known in the tropical subregions (with the exception of Costa Rica and Panama). Differences in total biodiversity were observed between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at the same latitude. In the north of the continent, the Tropical East Pacific is richer in species than the Tropical West Atlantic, however, when standardized by coastal length, there is very little difference among them. In the south, the Humboldt Current system is much richer than the Patagonian Shelf. An analysis of endemism shows that 75% of the species are reported within only one of the SA regions, while about 22% of the species of SA are not reported elsewhere in the world. National and regional initiatives focusing on new exploration, especially to unknown areas and ecosystems, as well as collaboration among countries are fundamental to achieving the goal of completing inventories of species diversity and distribution.These inventories will allow accurate interpretation of the biogeography of its two oceanic coasts and latitudinal trends,and will also provide relevant information for science based policies.  相似文献

The life cycle of Laminaria abyssalis (Laminariales,Phaeophyta) in culture   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
Laminaria abyssalis occurs in deep water in tropical latitudes of the Brazilian coast (19° 23 S, 38° 28 W to 22° 54 S, 42° 13 09 W). Its life cycle has been completed in the laboratory in seven months using different conditions of light and temperature. The gametophytic stage required for growth the low photon flux density of 1.2 ± 0.3 µmol m–2 s–1 and 18 °C, while the juvenile and adult sporophytes needed 15 µmol m–2 s–1 and 18 °C. The sporophytes became fertile at 23 °C. Our results showed that light and temperature are the main factors regulating the growth and life history of this species under the culture conditions tested.  相似文献

The ability of young plants of the brown alga Padina gymnospora to tolerate and accumulate zinc was determined for different zinc concentrations in seawater over a period of 21 days. This species, among 10 macroalgae species studied in a contaminated coastal area near Rio de Janeiro city, presented the highest zinc contents. The accumulation of zinc by this species determined from in vitro experiments increased approximately linearly with the zinc concentration in the water. A steady state was not reached even for high concentrations (1000 µg 1–1). Analytical electron microscopy techniques used for subcellular localization of this metal showed that the zinc was present as dense granules along the cell walls, starting in a region 15 to 25 cells away from the thallus apex, but being absent in the cytoplasm of viable cells. It is suggested that the cell walls play the main role in the zinc accumulation in Padina gymnospora.This paper is dedicated in honor of Prof. Carlos Chagas Filho, founder of the Institute of Biophysics, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary  相似文献
