The environmental variables that define a species ecological niche should be associated with the evolutionary patterns present in the adaptations that resulted from living in these conditions. Thus, when comparing across species, we can expect to find an association between phylogenetically independent phenotypic characters and ecological niche evolution. Few studies have evaluated how organismal phenotypes might mirror patterns of niche evolution if these phenotypes reflect adaptations. Doing so could contribute on the understanding of the origin and maintenance of phenotypic diversity observed in nature. Here, we show the pattern of niche evolution of the pinyon pine lineage (Pinus subsection Cembroides); then, we suggest morphological adaptations possibly related to niche divergence, and finally, we test for correlation between ecological niche and morphology. We demonstrate that niche divergence is the general pattern within the clade and that it is positively correlated with adaptation.  相似文献

Quantitative estimates of time-averaging (age mixing) in gastropod shell accumulations from Quaternary (the late Pleistocene and Holocene) eolian deposits of Canary Islands were obtained by direct dating of individual gastropods obtained from exceptionally well-preserved dune and paleosol shell assemblages. A total of 203 shells of the gastropods Theba geminata and T. arinagae, representing 44 samples (= stratigraphic horizons) from 14 sections, were dated using amino acid (isoleucine) epimerization ratios calibrated with 12 radiocarbon dates. Most samples reveal a substantial variation in shell age that exceeds the error that could be generated by dating imprecision, with the mean within-sample shell age range of 6670 years and the mean standard deviation of 2920 years. Even the most conservative approach (Monte Carlo simulations with a non-sequential Bonferroni correction) indicates that at least 25% of samples must have undergone substantial time-averaging (e.g., age variations within those samples cannot be explained by dating imprecision alone). Samples vary in shell age structure, including both left-skewed (17 out of 44) and right-skewed distributions (26 out of 44) as well as age distributions with a highly variable kurtosis. Dispersion and shape of age distributions of samples do not show any notable correlation with the stratigraphic age of samples, suggesting that the structure and scale of temporal mixing is time invariant. The statistically significant multi-millennial time-averaging observed here is consistent with previous studies of shell accumulations from various depositional settings and reinforces the importance of dating numerous specimens per horizon in geochronological studies. Unlike in the case of marine samples, typified by right-skewed age distributions (attributed to an exponential-like shell loss from older age classes), many of the samples analyzed here displayed left-skewed distributions, suggestive of different dynamics of age mixing in marine versus terrestrial shell accumulations.  相似文献

Different cytochromes P450 are involved in steroid biosynthesis. These cytochromes have heme as the prosthetic group. We previously reported that ACTH, an activator of glucocorticoid biosynthesis in adrenal, requires heme biosynthesis for a maximal response. In the present study, we investigated the effect of ACTH, and the effect of two activators of the adrenal mineralocorticoid synthesis, endothelin-1 and low sodium diet on 5-aminolevulinate-synthase (ALA-s) mRNA. ALA-s is the rate-limiting enzyme in heme biosynthesis. It was found that infusion of rats with ACTH for 1 h caused an increase of adrenal ALA-s mRNA and activity accompanied by an increase in plasma corticosterone. CYP21, a cytochrome involved in the synthesis of both corticosterone and aldosterone, was not modified at the RNA level in adrenal glands by 1 h of ACTH infusion. Consistently, infusion of endothelin-1 for 1 h increased ALA-s mRNA and aldosterone content in adrenal gland without modifying CYP21 mRNA levels. To study if ALA-s is also regulated by the main physiological stimuli that increase adrenal mineralocorticoid secretion, we fed rats with low salt diet for 2 or 15 days. Low salt diet treatment increased adrenal gland ALA-s mRNA levels. On the other hand, the rapid stimulation of ALA-s mRNA by ACTH which acts through cyclic AMP was confirmed in H295R human adrenocortical cells, the only human adrenal cell line that has a steroid secretion pattern and regulation similar to primary cultures of adrenal cells. Our findings suggest that the acute activation of adrenal steroidogenic cytochromes by trophic hormones involves an increase in heme biosynthesis which will favor the production of active cytochromes.  相似文献

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women after menopause. Hypertension, a major cardiovascular risk factor, becomes more prevalent after menopause. The mechanisms responsible for the increase in blood pressure (BP) in postmenopausal women are unknown. We have recently characterized the aged, postestrous-cycling (PMR) spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) as a model of postmenopausal hypertension. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether endothelin plays a role in the increased BP in PMR. Premenopausal female SHR, aged 4-5 mo (YF), and PMR, aged 16 mo, were studied. Expression of preproendothelin-1 mRNA was not different in either renal cortex or medulla between PMR and YF (n = 7-8/group). In contrast, ET-1 peptide expression was significantly higher in renal cortex of PMR than in renal cortex of YF, but there was no difference in medullary ET-1. Expression of endothelin ET(A) receptor (ET(A)R) mRNA was lower in renal cortex and medulla of PMR than of YF. Additional groups of rats (n = 6-7/group) were treated for 3 wk with the ET(A)R antagonist ABT-627 (5 mg.kg(-1).day(-1)). BP was significantly higher in PMR than in YF. ET(A)R antagonist reduced BP in PMR by 20% to the level found in control YF. ET(A)R antagonist had no effect on BP in YF. These data support the hypothesis that the increase in BP in PMR is mediated in part by endothelin and the ET(A)R.  相似文献
