SUMMARY. 1. Published data are used to construct a tentative carbon budget for the ecosystem of the lower river Rhine and its sedimentation areas in The Netherlands.
2. It is estimated that 287 × 106kg Cy−1 of particulate organic material is transported by the river Rhine, and 100 × 106 kgCy−1 of this material is deposited in the delta.
3. Phytoplankton and nitrifying bacteria seem to contribute significantly to the carbon budget, by producing c. 78 × 106kgCy−l.
4. The mineralization in the water (estimated from routine determinations of biological oxygen demand and from in situ diurnal fluctuations of oxygen) and in the bottom (estimated from the denitrification rates in the delta, from the production rate of methane and from overall oxygen consumption) is shown to degrade c. 50% of the carbon input plus autochthonous production.
5. The carbon budget and oxygen regime in the lower Rhine suggest that after decades of severe organic pollution the river has more or less resumed the normal, slightly heterotrophic state of a large lowland river.  相似文献

A range of almost 1400 cross combinations has been carried out between 31 species of Tulipa subgenus Tulipa. Most of the sections are well separated reproductively from each other. The designated species aggregates in section Clusianae appeared to be intersterile. Also in section Kolpakowskianae the species, as far as used, cannot be combined. Some crosses between species of section Tulipanum succeeded. The species of sections Eichleres and Tulipa (including the cultivated tulip T gesneriana) could be combined in various ways, although the highest level of seed set was achieved within either section. The crossability data support the current taxonomic division. The level of reproductive isolation between sympatric species is discussed, and the importance of crossability studies for plant breeding in Tulipa pointed out briefly.  相似文献

Agricultural intensification is one of the main drivers of farmland bird declines, but effects on birds may be confounded with those of climate change. Here we examine the effects of intensification and climate change on a grassland breeding wader, the Black‐tailed Godwit Limosa l. limosa, in the Netherlands. Population decline has been linked to poor chick survival which, in turn, has been linked to available foraging habitat. Foraging habitat of the nidifugous chicks consists of uncut grasslands that provide cover and arthropod prey. Conservation measures such as agri‐environment schemes aim to increase the availability of chick foraging habitat but have not yet been successful in halting the decline. Field observations show that since the early 1980s, farmers advanced their first seasonal mowing or grazing date by 15 days, whereas Godwits did not advance their hatching date. Ringing data indicate that between 1945 and 1975 hatching dates advanced by about 2 weeks in parallel with the advancement of median mowing dates. Surprisingly, temperature sums at median mowing and hatching dates suggest that while the agricultural advancement before 1980 was largely due to agricultural intensification, after 1980 it was largely due to climate change. Examining arthropod abundance in a range of differently managed grasslands revealed that chick food abundance was little affected but that food accessibility in intensively used tall swards may be problematic for chicks. Our results suggest that, compared with 25 years ago, nowadays (1) a much higher proportion of clutches and chicks are exposed to agricultural activities, (2) there is little foraging habitat left when chicks hatch and (3) because of climate change, the vegetation in the remaining foraging habitat is taller and denser and therefore of lower quality. This indicates that for agri‐environment schemes to make a difference, they should not only be implemented in a larger percentage of the breeding area than the current maxima of 20–30% but they should also include measures that create more open, accessible swards.  相似文献

We assessed the potential impacts of land-use changes resulting from a change in the current biofuel policy on biodiversity in Europe. We evaluated the possible impact of both arable and woody biofuel crops on changes in distribution of 313 species pertaining to different taxonomic groups. Using species-specific information on habitat suitability as well as land use simulations for three different biofuel policy options, we downscaled available species distribution data from the original resolution of 50 to 1 km. The downscaled maps were then applied to analyse potential changes in habitat size and species composition at different spatial levels. Our results indicate that more species might suffer from habitat losses rather than benefit from a doubled biofuel target, while abolishing the biofuel target would mainly have positive effects. However, the possible impacts vary spatially and depend on the biofuel crop choice, with woody crops being less detrimental than arable crops. Our results give an indication for policy and decision makers of what might happen to biodiversity under a changed biofuel policy in the European Union. The presented approach is considered to be innovative as to date no comparable policy impact assessment has been applied to such a large set of key species at the European scale.  相似文献

The genome of Arabidopsis thaliana contains six putative cell-wall type invertase genes (AtcwINV1-6). Heterologous expression of AtcwINV1, 3 and 6 cDNAs in Pichia pastoris revealed that the enzymes encoded by AtcwINV3 and 6 did not show invertase activity. Instead, AtcwINV3 is a 6-FEH and AtcwINV6 is a fructan exohydrolase (FEH) that can degrade both inulin and levan-type fructans. For AtcwINV6 it is proposed to use the term (6&1) FEH. In contrast, AtcwINV1 is a typical invertase. FEH activity was also detected in crude extracts of different parts of Arabidopsis. To verify that the FEH activity of AtcwINV3 and 6 were not artefacts of the heterologous expression system, the protein corresponding to AtcwINV3 was isolated from whole Arabidopsis plants and indeed showed only 6-FEH activity and no invertase activity. Although no fructans can be detected in Arabidopsis plants, it is shown that kestoses (trimers) can be synthesized in crude leaf extracts. The putative physiological significance of FEH in so-called non-fructan plants is discussed.  相似文献

1. Bioturbation, by definition, changes the structure and properties of sediments, thereby altering the environment of the bioturbator and other benthic species. In addition to the indirect effects of sediment reworking (e.g. changes in water quality), bioturbating species may also directly interfere with other species via competition. This study aims, therefore, to examine both the direct and indirect effects of sediment reworking by an opportunistic detritivore on survival and growth of a specialised mayfly species. 2. Bioturbation was imposed by adding different densities of the midge Chironomus riparius to clean and polluted sediments. Changes in water quality and sediment properties, and survival and growth of the mayfly Ephoron virgo were assessed. 3. Chironomid density had a strong negative effect on the concentrations of metals, nutrients and particles in the overlying water, but increased the penetration of oxygen into the sediment. Survival and growth of E. virgo were strongly reduced in the presence of chironomids. In the polluted sediment, the activity of chironomids enhanced the negative effects of pollution on E. virgo. In the clean sediment, inhibition of the mayfly was even more pronounced. 4. This suggests that direct disturbance by C. riparius was more important than indirect changes in water quality, and over‐ruled the potential positive effects of improved oxygen penetration. The results indicated that the distribution of small insects, such as E. virgo, can be limited by bioturbating benthic invertebrates.  相似文献
