The alpha-like globin gene cluster in rabbits contains embryonic zeta-
globin genes, an adult alpha-globin gene, and theta-globin genes of
undetermined function. The basic arrangement of genes, deduced from
analysis of cloned DNA fragments, is 5'-zeta 0-zeta 1-alpha 1-theta 1- zeta
2-zeta 3-theta 2-3'. However, the pattern of restriction fragments
containing zeta- and theta-globin genes varies among individual rabbits.
Analysis of BamHI fragments of genomic DNA from 24 New Zealand white
rabbits revealed eight different patterns of fragments containing
zeta-globin genes. The large BamHI fragments containing genes zeta 0 and
zeta 1 are polymorphic in length, whereas a 1.9-kb fragment containing the
zeta 2 gene and the 3.5-kb fragment containing the zeta 3 gene do not vary
in size. In contrast to this constancy in the size of the restriction
fragments, the copy number of the zeta 2 and zeta 3 genes does vary among
different rabbits. No length polymorphism was detected in the BamHI
fragments containing the theta-globin genes, but again the copy number
varies for restriction fragments containing the theta 2 gene. The alpha 1-
and theta 1-globin genes are located in a nonpolymorphic 7.2-kb BamHI
fragment. The combined data from hybridization with both zeta and theta
probes shows that the BamHI cleavage pattern does not vary within the
region 5'-alpha 1-theta 1- zeta 2-zeta 3-theta 2-3', but the pattern
genomic blot-hybridization patterns for the progeny of parental rabbits
with different zeta-globin gene patterns shows that the polymorphic
patterns are inherited in a Mendelian fashion. Two different haplotypes
have been mapped based on the genomic blot-hybridization data. The
variation in the alpha-like globin gene cluster in the rabbit population
results both from differences in the copy number of the duplication block
containing the zeta-zeta-theta gene set and from the presence or absence of
polymorphic BamHI sites.

A new taxonomic treatment of the Festuca ovina L. aggregate (Poaceae) in the British Isles. A wide range of morphological, anatomical and cytological characters was collected and analysed by a variety of methods, some taxometric. As a result nine species are recognized in the British Isles, one (F. glauca Vill.) only as a garden plant and two (F. huonii Auquier and F. armoricana Kerguélen) only in the Channel Isles. Two other species sometimes claimed for the British Isles (F. guestfalica Boenn. ex Reichb. and F. indigesta Boiss.) are excluded for various reasons given. One species (F. ovina L.) is divided into three subspecies: the diploid subsp. ovina (commonest in the north); and the tetraploid subsp. hirtula (Hackel ex Travis) M. Single batrachotoxin-activated sodium channels from rat brain were modified by trimethyloxonium (TMO) after incorporation in planar lipid bilayers. TMO modification eliminated saxitoxin (STX) sensitivity, reduced the single channel conductance by 37%, and reduced calcium block of inward sodium currents. These effects always occurred concomitantly, in an all-or-none fashion. Calcium and STX protected sodium channels from TMO modification with potencies similar to their affinities for block. Calcium inhibited STX binding to rat brain membrane vesicles and relieved toxin block of channels in bilayers, apparently by competing with STX for the toxin binding site. These results suggest that toxins, permeant cations, and blocking cations can interact with a common site on the sodium channel near the extracellular surface. It is likely that permeant cations transiently bind to this superficial site, as the first of several steps in passing inward through the channel. 相似文献

An anatomical investigation of the leaves and twigs of Pterostemonaceae (Engl.), a monogeneric family of two species, has been made. The following anatomical characters in the leaf are of particular interest: glandular hairs, hydathodes on the marginal dentations and secretory substances in the glands and palisade cells. A sectioned and polished specimen of the coral Archohelia vicksburgensis from the early Oligocene Byram Formation (~30 Ma) near Vicksburg, Mississippi, reveals 12 prominent annual growth bands. Stable oxygen isotopic compositions of 77 growth‐band‐parallel microsamples of original aragonite exhibit well‐constrained fluctuations that range between ?2.0 and ?4.8. Variation in δ18O of coral carbonate reflects seasonal variation in temperature ranging from 12 to 24 °C about a mean of 18 °C. These values are consistent with those derived from a bivalve and a fish otolith from the same unit, each using independently derived palaeotemperature equations. Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios were determined for 40 additional samples spanning five of the 12 annual bands. Palaeotemperatures calculated using elemental‐ratio thermometers calibrated on modern corals are consistently lower; mean temperature from Mg/Ca ratios are 12.5 ± 1 °C while those from Sr/Ca are 5.8 ± 2.2 °C. Assuming that δ18O‐derived temperatures are correct, relationships between temperature and elemental ratio for corals growing in today's ocean can be used to estimate Oligocene palaeoseawater Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios. Calculations indicate that early Oligocene seawater Mg/Ca was ~81% (4.2 mol mol?1) and Sr/Ca ~109% (9.9 mmol mol?1) of modern values. Oligocene seawater with this degree of Mg depletion and Sr enrichment is in good agreement with that expected during the Palaeogene transition from ‘calcite’ to ‘aragonite’ seas. Lower Oligocene Mg/Ca probably reflects a decrease toward the present day in sea‐floor hydrothermal activity and concomitant decrease in scavenging of magnesium from seawater. Elevated Sr/Ca ratio may record lesser amounts of Oligocene aragonite precipitation and a correspondingly lower flux of strontium into the sedimentary carbonate reservoir than today. 相似文献

Abstract Opportunistic sightings and strandings of Caperea marginata (n=196) from the vicinity of Australia and New Zealand (1884 to early 2007) were used to relate geographic and temporal patterns to oceanographic and broad-scale climatic variability. Records were not uniformly distributed along the coast and more (69%) were from Australia than New Zealand. Seven coastal whale ‘hotspots’ were identified which accounted for 61% of records with locality data. Half of the hotspot records were from southeast (37) and northwest (20) Tasmania—others each had 9–15 events. Upwelling and/or high zooplankton abundance has been documented near all whale hotspots. Records of C. marginata occurred in all months, with 75% in spring and summer. Inter-annual variability showed broad agreement between increased whale records (usually in spring/summer) and strongly positive ‘Niño 3.4’ during 1980–1995 but not thereafter. Coastal upwelling and productivity increase during climatic phenomena such as El Niño and are likely to be quickly beneficial to plankton-feeding whales such as C. marginata. 相似文献

ABSTRACT A sonagraphic analysis of the vocalizations of bullfinches Pyrrhula pyrrhula is presented and their behavioural contexts and functions noted. The vocal repertoire of the bullfinch is compared to that of other finches with particular attention to repertoire size and sexual specificity; the repertoire of 14–17 vocal categories is comparatively greater than that of most carduelines and the majority of vocalizations were given by both sexes. The development of nestling, fledgling and some adult calls is described. Early vocal ontogeny in the bullfinch was similar to that previously described for the chaffinch. The earliest recorded calls of nestling bullfinches showed a single fundamental. The independent use of two sound sources became apparent on the second day after hatching and the major elements of the three best studied call types were all derived from the lower fundamental of the nestling begging call. 相似文献

We describe the isolation and characterization of 12 tetranucleotide microsatellites for Rio Grande cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii virginalis) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and subsequently investigate their performance in Colorado River cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii pleuriticus), greenback cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii stomias) and Yellowstone cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki bouvieri).
