An aquatic microfossil assemblage from Cenomanian amber of France   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The ‘osseous’ amber from the Cenomanian of northwestern France contains numerous microscopic inclusions, some of which are fairly well preserved and identifiable as protists. This paper describes three cyanobacteria similar to modern Plectonema. Lyngbya, and Coelosphaeriunr, fungus-like fossils of uncertain affinities (cf. ?Candida); a colorless chrysomonad similar to Monas; a desmid identical with Closterium; and naked ciliates of uncertain affinities (cf. Cyrtolophosis). All of these fossils are in a single sample of amber from Bretagnolles (Eure Département). This assemblage is comparable to modern limnetic microbial communities. It is typical of shallow freshwater environments in which productivity and respiration are both high. This interpretation fits paleoecological reconstructions drawn from the arthropod fossils from French amber. ***Chrysomonads, ciliates, Cretaceous, cyanobacteria, desmids, fungi, micropaleontology.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The first known fossil slime mold with part of the plasmodium preserved, from Eocene-Oligocene amber of the northern Dominican Republic, is described here. We assign it to the myxomycetes on the basis of its cytoplasmic structure. The paleoecological and evolutionary importance of this fossil is briefly discussed.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The Ediacaran fossils of the latest Precambrian haveat one time or another been grouped with almost every extantkingdom, and also lumped into separate kingdom-level taxa. Thishas often been based on the facile use of a few characters,or on some sort of "overall similarity." This has not been avery fruitful approach; if anything, it has held back understandingof the Ediacaran organisms and of their significance for laterhistory. While many of the simpler forms remain problematic, careful study of the more complex forms gives good reasons toplace at least some of them with the Animalia. A complementaryapproach is to use sources of information such as the distributionof fossils across space, time, and paleoenvironments. The resultsmay feed back into systematic work, allowing us to constructand test more robust hypotheses of these organisms' evolutionaryrelationships.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Fossil protist cysts are reported from the mid-Cretaceous amber of Ellsworth County, Kansas, which is rich in terrestrial microfossils but contains no known macrofossils. On the basis of their distinctive morphology, the cysts can be referred to the genus Naegleria (Schizopyrenida); they most closely resemble cysts of the living species Naegleria gruberi. This is the first known fossil record for this group of amoebas. the current phylogenetic position and paleoecological role of Naegleria are discussed in relation to this find; it provides direct confirmation of morphological stasis in this group, which had previously been inferred from rRNA sequence divergence data.,  相似文献
