BackgroundIn Senegal, with the variable routine vaccination coverage, the risk for illness and death from measles still exists as evidenced by the measles epidemic episode in 2009. Since 2002 a laboratory-based surveillance system of measles was established by the Ministry of Health and the Institut Pasteur de Dakar. The present study analysed the data collected over the 10 years inclusive between 2004-2013 in order to define a measles epidemiological profile in Senegal, and we carried out a phylogenetic analysis of measles virus circulating in Senegal over the period 2009-2012.ConclusionImprovements in the measles surveillance in Senegal are required and the introduction of oral fluid and FTA cards as an alternative to transportation of sera should be investigated to improve surveillance. The introduction of a national vaccine database including number of doses of measles-containing vaccine will greatly improve efforts to interrupt and ultimately eliminate measles virus transmission in Senegal.  相似文献

The European Black Pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) has a long and complex history. Genetic distance and frequency analyses identified three differentiated genetic groups, which corresponded to three wide geographical areas: Westerns Mediterranean, Balkan Peninsula and Asia Minor. These groups shared common ancestors (14.75 and 10.72 Ma). The most recent splits occurred after the Messinian Salinity Crisis (4.37 Ma) and the Early–Middle Pleistocene Transitions (0.93 Ma). The posterior ancestral population size (Na) is 260,000–265,000 individuals. Each pool is further fragmented, with evidence of a phylogeographic structure (N st  > G st ) typically observed in some natural populations from the Western Mediterranean region and the Balkan Peninsula. The laboratory analysis was performed by fragment analysis—i.e. electrophoretic sizing of polymerase chain reaction fragments, combined with the sequencing analysis of 33 % of all individuals as a control. Intense sampling of chloroplast DNA polymorphisms (3154 individuals and 13 markers: SNPs and SSRs) over the full area of the species’ natural distribution indicated moderate among-population variability (G st(nc) ≤ 0.177) in various parts of its range. These results indicate that the natural populations have long migration histories that differ from one another and that they have been strongly phylogeographically affected by complex patterns of isolation, speciation and fragmentation. Long and varying climatic fluctuations in the region of the principal genetic group have been the probable cause of different forest community associations with different successional patterns resulting in interglacial refugia vs. macro long-term refugia.  相似文献

The boreal ecocline (ca 49°N) between the southern mixedwood (dominated by balsam fir) and the northern coniferous bioclimatic domain (dominated by black spruce) may be explained by a northward decrease of balsam fir regeneration, explaining the gradual shift to black spruce dominance. 7,010 sample plots, with absence of major disturbances, were provided by the Quebec Ministry of Forest, Fauna, and Parks. The regeneration (sapling abundance) of balsam fir and black spruce were compared within and between the two bioclimatic domains, accounting for parental trees, main soil type (clay and till) and climate conditions, reflected by summer growing degree‐days above 5°C (GDD_5), total summer precipitation (May–August; PP_MA). Parental trees and soil type determined balsam fir and black spruce regeneration. Balsam fir and black spruce, respectively, showed higher regeneration in the mixedwood and the coniferous bioclimatic domains. Overall, higher regeneration was obtained on till for balsam fir, and on clay soils for black spruce. GDD_5 and PP_MA were beneficial for balsam fir regeneration on clay and till soils, respectively, while they were detrimental for black spruce regeneration. At a population level, balsam fir required at least 28% of parental tree basal area in the mixedwood, and 38% in the coniferous bioclimatic domains to maintain a regeneration at least equal to the mean regeneration of the whole study area. However, black spruce required 82% and 79% of parental trees basal area in the mixedwood and the coniferous domains, respectively. The northern limit of the mixedwood bioclimatic domain was attributed to a gradual decrease toward the north of balsam fir regeneration most likely due to cooler temperatures, shorter growing seasons, and decrease of the parental trees further north of this northern limit. However, balsam fir still persists above this northern limit, owing to a patchy occurrence of small parental trees populations, and good establishment substrates.  相似文献

Among the different forms of epilepsies, mesiotemporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is one of the most common and represents the main pharmaco-resistant form of epilepsy. There is therefore an urgent need to better understand this form of epilepsy to develop better anti-epileptic drugs. Many rodent models are mimicking some aspects of the human temporal lobe epilepsy but only few are addressing most of the human mesiotemporal lobe epilepsy. In this article, we describe the main characteristics of a mouse of model of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. This model is generated by a single injection of kainic acid into the dorsal hippocampus which reproduces most of the morphological and electrophysiological features of human MTLE in a mouse. This model may help to better understand mesial temporal lobe epilepsy and the development of new therapeutic drugs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether children who have had measles have reduced general cell mediated immunity three years later compared with vaccinated children who have not had measles. DESIGN: Historical cohort study. SETTING: Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. SUBJECTS: 391 children aged 3-13 years who were living in Bissau during a measles epidemic in 1991 and still lived there. These included 131 primary cases and 139 secondary cases from the epidemic and 121 vaccinated controls with no history of measles. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: General cell mediated immunity assessed by measurement of delayed type hypersensitivity skin responses to seven recall antigens. Anergy was defined as a lack of response to all antigens. RESULTS: 82 out of 268 cases of measles (31%) were anergic compared with 20 of the 121 vaccinated controls (17%) (odds ratio adjusted for potential confounding variables 2.2 (95% confidence interval 1.2 to 4.0); P 0.009). The prevalence of anergy was higher in secondary cases (33% (46/138)) than in primary cases (28% (36/130)), although this difference was not significant. Anergy was more common in the rainy season (unadjusted prevalence 31% (91/291) than in the dry season (11% (11/98)) (adjusted odds ratio 4.8 (2.2 to 10.3)). This seasonal increase occurred predominantly in the case of measles. CONCLUSION: Reduced general cell mediated immunity may contribute to the higher long term mortality in children who have had measles compared with recipients of standard measles vaccine and to the higher child mortality in the rainy season in west Africa.  相似文献

Woody plants in the last existing fragment of closed gallery forest in Delta du Saloum National Park, Senegal, were investigated by use of a 0.6 ha transect covering the main part of the gallery forest. There were 24 species and 369 individuals > 5 cm dbh with a basal area of 12.6 m2, 1062 individuals ≥ 1 cm dbh in 31 species, and 1730 individuals < 1 cm dbh in 29 species. Constrained clustering revealed six floristically distinct sections along the transect, and these sections coincided with structural differences. The vegetation in the study area is marked by degradation caused by frequent and intense fires coming from the surrounding savanna and by declining precipitation. However, the gallery forest is unique to the area and of crucial importance for conserving biodiversity. It can in the future be important as a resource-base for restoration of the gallery forest system by means of natural regeneration.  相似文献

The use of the palm tree Borassus aethiopum Mart(Coryphoideae) by the Bassari ethnic group in the Republic of Guinea wasstudied. Ethnic groups have multiple uses for B. aethiopumthroughout its distribution in tropical Africa. The Bassari use this palm mostlyas a palm wine resource. As their harvesting technique leads to the death of thepalm, the populations of this species are highly endangered in the areapopulated by the Bassari. The fast decline of an important resource has recentlygained attention at governmental level. In order to conserve the populations ofthis palm, it is essential to understand whether the Bassari use a lethaltechnique because of socio-economic reasons or due to a lack of knowledge. Thepresent study aims to answer this question. We collected the data in thenorth-western part of the Republic of Guinea in May 1996 by field observationsand by using 'Rapid Rural Appraisal' tools consisting of interactiveinterviews with palm wine harvesters, collectors, carriers and sellers. Afterconstructing a woody ladder fixed to the stem the Bassari extract the sap bycutting a hole into the palm heart and by removing a small part of the palmheart two times per day. Individual trees produce on average 10 lper day. After 35–45 days the sap production ceases and thepalm dies. A harvester kills on average 56 individuals of B.aethiopum per year. As a consequence of this lethal techniqueexploiters have to constantly move through and between palm populations. Thereis no reforestation of the degraded areas. The palm wine extraction ofB. aethiopum is the main activity of the Bassari for 7months of the year. For harvesters, collectors, carriers andsellers, palm wine extraction provides one of the most important annual incomes. The harvester pays a monthly tax of USD 5 to the forestry administration.Despite its economic importance, the Bassari palm wine harvesters rangeB. aethiopum as the sixth most important plant species in the area. The paradoxical situation of acommunity that threatens a resource that it is highly dependent on may beexplained by the following circumstances. Firstly, the exploiters seek a maximumprofit on a short term basis. Secondly, the exploiters apparently do not takeinto consideration the total value of other potential products from theBorassus. Thirdly, the Bassari do not have an importanttradition for exploiting B. aethiopum so that there is noapparent cultural alliance between the Bassari and the palm. Finally, the rulesand regulations for harvesting Borassus products favourquick profit. The extinction of the palm population studied can be expectedwithin about 25 years if no protection measure is taken.  相似文献

The cytosine DNA methylation and demethylation have a role in regulating plant responses to the environment by affecting the promoter regions of most plant defense-related genes through the CpG islands or the CCGG motifs. Salicylic acid, a defense and signaling plant hormone, is seen playing crucial role in the variation of the methylome. In this study, the effects of salicylic acid and feeding of the millet headminer (Heliocheilus albipunctella de Joannis) on pearl millet DNA methylome changes were evaluated through MSAP epigenotyping during panicle development. The results showed that millet headminer feeding increased the level of genomic methylation while application of salicylic acid caused DNA demethylation occurring mostly at external cytosine and accompanied by a decrease of the number of larvae per panicle. This suggests that hemimethylation (external cytosine methylation) has key role in regulating defense responses and conferring tolerance to pearl millet through salicylic acid application.  相似文献
