Vibrio pelagius was added to filtered sea water in experimental tanks containing newly-hatched larvae of Scophthalmus maximus. The bacterial load of larvae increased from day 1 post-hatch and by day 14 had reached 5 × 104 bacteria per larva. Vibrio pelagius dominated the aerobic bacterial flora of larvae exposed to this bacterial species but was not detected in larvae not exposed to exogenous bacteria. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using rabbit antiserum against V. pelagius allowed a specific quantitative assay for homologous bacterial antigens in individual larvae, with very little cross-reaction against heterologous bacteria. The results of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays of V. pelagius antigens in larvae from tank water inoculated with this bacterial species correlated with the bacterial levels found in the larvae by culture on agar plates.  相似文献

We hypothesized that the trophic level of marine copepods should depend on the composition of the protist community. To test this hypothesis, we manipulated the phytoplankton composition in mesocosms and measured grazing rates of copepods and mesozooplankton in those mesocosms. Twelve mesocosms with Northeast Atlantic phytoplankton were fertilised with different Si:N ratios from 0:1 to 1:1. After 1 week, ten of the mesocosms were filled with natural densities of mesozooplankton, mainly calanoid copepods, while two remained as mesozooplankton-free controls. Both before and after the addition of copepods there was a positive correlation of diatom dominance with Si:N ratios. During the second phase of the experiment, copepod and microzooplankton grazing rates on different phytoplankton species were assessed by a modification of the Landry-Hassett dilution technique, where the bottles containing the different dilution treatments were replaced by dialysis bags incubated in situ. The results indicated no overlap in the food spectrum of microzooplankton (mainly ciliates) and copepods. Ciliates fed on nanoplankton, while copepods fed on large or chain-forming diatoms, naked dinoflagellates, and ciliates. The calculated trophic level of copepods showed a significantly negative but weak correlation with Si:N ratios. The strength of this response was strongly dependent on the trophic levels assumed for ciliates and mixotrophic dinoflagellates.  相似文献

A recent meta‐analysis indicates that trophic cascades (indirect effects of predators on plants via herbivores) are weak in marine plankton in striking contrast to freshwater plankton ( Shurin et al. 2002 , Ecol. Lett., 5, 785–791). Here we show that in a marine plankton community consisting of jellyfish, calanoid copepods and algae, jellyfish predation consistently reduced copepods but produced two distinct, opposite responses of algal biomass. Calanoid copepods act as a switch between alternative trophic cascades along food chains of different length and with counteracting effects on algal biomass. Copepods reduced large algae but simultaneously promoted small algae by feeding on ciliates. The net effect of jellyfish on total algal biomass was positive when large algae were initially abundant in the phytoplankton, negative when small algae were dominant, but zero when experiments were analysed in combination. In contrast to marine systems, major pathways of energy flow in Daphnia‐dominated freshwater systems are of similar chain length. Thus, differences in the length of alternative, parallel food chains may explain the apparent discrepancy in trophic cascade strength between freshwater and marine planktonic systems.  相似文献

Microcosms with three different food web structures and phosphorus (P) limited growth medium were used to study the interactions between P and organic carbon (C) fractions in pelagic food webs. The cultures were run with low dilution to allow the biological processes to determine the outcome. A double isotope technique was used to follow the C and P compartments. In all systems the primary production was P limited. The measured P:C ratios and the observed accumulation of degradable dissolved organic carbon (DOC) indicated that the growth of heterotrophic bacteria was also P limited. The presence of neither algal grazers nor flagellates feeding on bacteria altered the limitation pattern. A net loss of P from the bacterial fraction was observed after the bloom. Different strategies for nutrient aquisition and growth are proposed as mechanisms enabling simultaneous P limitation of algae and bacteria, and a concomitant accumulation of degradable DOC. The ability of the algae to grow with low P:C ratio keeps the regeneration of P through grazers low enough to cause sustained P limitation of both algae and bacteria. The grazers were important producers of DOC when present. This implies that the usual assumption of carbon limited bacterial growth may lead to wrong conclusions regarding the dynamics of plankton communities and the DOC pool.  相似文献

In a mesocosm experiment providing a gradient of semi-continuousaddition of mineral nutrient, production rates and mortalityof phytoplankton were estimated. Heterotrophic bacterial biomassand production rates and their responses to the mineral nutrientsadditions were also estimated. The purpose of the experimentwas to establish responses of the major biological factors asa function of nutrient amendments. Initial primary productionwas 0.47 µg C L–1 day–1. In the most fertilizedmesocosm, phytoplankton biomass increased at a specific rateof 0.4 day–1 during the first week of the experiment,and on day 9 primary production reached a peak at 1027 µgC L–1 day–1. The responses in the other fertilizedmesocosms were intermediate, and in an unfertilized controlthe variables measured stayed almost constant throughout theexperiment. The termination of the blooms in the fertilizedmesocosms was a consequence of nitrogen limitation, and nitrogenlimitation subsequently induced storage of intracellular organicmaterial in the phytoplankton. In the mesocosm receiving thehighest daily dose of nutrients, strong post-bloom nutrientlimitation resulted in high phytoplankton mortality, and releaseof organic material from the algae supported the gradient’shighest heterotrophic bacterial production.  相似文献

Detrimental host–pathogen interactions are a normal phenomenon in aquaculture animal production, and have been counteracted by prophylactic use of antibiotics. Especially, the youngest life stages of cultivated aquatic animals are susceptible to pathogen invasion, resulting in disease and mortality. To establish a more sustainable aquatic food production, there is a need for new microbial management strategies that focus on ‘join them'' and not the traditional ‘beat them'' approaches. We argue that ecological theory could serve as a foundation for developing sustainable microbial management methods that prevent pathogenic disease in larviculture. Management of the water microbiota in aquaculture systems according to ecological selection principles has been shown to decrease opportunistic pathogen pressure and to result in an improved performance of the cultured animals. We hypothesize that manipulation of the biodiversity of the gut microbiota can increase the host''s resistance against pathogenic invasion and infection. However, substantial barriers need to be overcome before active management of the intestinal microbiota can effectively be applied in larviculture.  相似文献
