Absract Three pedicellate-declinate-flowered species of Trillium (Liliaceae), T. vaseyi and T. flexipes , were studied for their life history characteristics, e.g., stage class structures of natural populations and reproductive features, including energy allocation to reproductive activities. The populations structures of all three species showed similar depletion structures characterized by a conspicuous decrease of individuals in the small juvenile stages, as was also observed in pedicellate-erect-flowered Trillium species However, with respect to reproductive characteristics, these three declinate-flowered species showed different features from erect-flowered species, although they belong to the same pedicellate-flowered group. That is, these declinate-flowered Trillium species exhibited low seed setting rates of 30% in T. catesbaei , 45% in T. vaseyi and 34% in T. flexipes , suggesting that they possess different mating systems from erect-flowered species which showed high seed setting rates of 50–90%.  相似文献

Both the floral biology and morphometrics of two Japanese species of AsianDisporum (sectionEudisporum) are presented. These two species,D. sessile andD. smilacinum, represent extremes in both floral morphology and divergence in pollination within the section. The inverted flowers ofD. sessile have an elongate floral tube formed by the imbrication of the oblanceolate tepals. The tepal bases are modified into well developed, saccate nectaries. The stamens have rigid, vertical filaments which tightly encircle the ovary-style axis, and extrorse anthers located within a floral cavity which can accommodate a large pollinator (cross-pollination). The stigma is exserted and the depth of its cleft formation constant.D. smilacinum, in contrast, has an open, nodding campanulate flower with lanceolate tepals which have only shallow nectaries at their bases. The stamens have widely divergent filaments with versatile anthers that have laterally introrse dehiscence (wind and/or self-pollination). The depth of the stigma cleft is variable. For both species, the pattern of differential UV absorption and reflectance is similar. It is suggested on morphological grounds and by pollinator observation, thatD. sessile with a high energy flower requiring specialized visitors represents a more advanced condition than that observed inD. smilacinum, which is more generalized and primitive. Seasonal herbivore pressure on the tepal nectaries ofD. sessile is discussed in relation to its pollination.  相似文献

The floral biology ofErythronium japonicum has been studied from two approaches: a reinvestigation of its floral morphology and a pollinator case history. The perianth, differentiated into a sepal and petal cycle, has a tubular, but free arrangement basally around a slightly stipitate ovary. The two cycles of stamens with dimorphic filaments are positioned by the differently lobed auricles of the mature sepals and petals. These auricles also form a trap-lid mechanism for the inverted nectary which also has passageways. The perianth parts are highly UV absorbant due to the presence of flavonoids. This pattern contrasts strikingly with the purple trident basal guide lines so prominent in the visible spectrum. The weakly protandrous flowers also have exserted styles, thus functioning to exclude its own pollen and insure outbreeding. These floral adaptations are related specifically to the pollination behavior ofXylocopa appendiculata, and in general to the floral evolution within the genusErythronium. Disruption of epithelial barrier by proinflammatory cytokines such as IFN-gamma represents a major pathophysiological consequence of intestinal inflammation. We have previously shown that IFN-gamma increases paracellular permeability in model T84 epithelial cells by inducing endocytosis of tight junction (TJ) proteins occludin, JAM-A, and claudin-1. The present study was designed to dissect mechanisms of IFN-gamma-induced endocytosis of epithelial TJ proteins. IFN-gamma treatment of T84 cells resulted in internalization of TJ proteins into large actin-coated vacuoles that originated from the apical plasma membrane and resembled the vacuolar apical compartment (VAC) previously observed in epithelial cells that lose cell polarity. The IFN-gamma dependent formation of VACs required ATPase activity of a myosin II motor but was not dependent on rapid turnover of F-actin. In addition, activated myosin II was observed to colocalize with VACs after IFN-gamma exposure. Pharmacological analyses revealed that formation of VACs and endocytosis of TJ proteins was mediated by Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) but not myosin light chain kinase (MLCK). Furthermore, IFN-gamma treatment resulted in activation of Rho GTPase and induced expressional up-regulation of ROCK. These results, for the first time, suggest that IFN-gamma induces endocytosis of epithelial TJ proteins via RhoA/ROCK-mediated, myosin II-dependent formation of VACs.  相似文献

The ultraviolet reflectance pattern of flowers from 54 species representing 22 families, many native or introduced to Japan, were surveyed. Their differential ultraviolet patterns, i.e. spectral polymorphisms, were recorded by paired photographs of fresh flowers: one taken in full sunlight and the other through a visible spectrum absorbing filter. The different types of polymorphisms observed varied from total absorption by the whole flower to limited absorption by selected floral parts, such as corolla bases (nectar guides) or anthers. Some visible spectrum polymorphisms, e.g. inAnemone andHepatica, were not associated with different ultraviolet patterns. In three species ofIris, a distinct ultraviolet absorbing landing spot and nectar, tunnel guide as well as reflecting anthers are reported. The downward exerted anthers ofSolanum nigrum which shed pollen through bee wing vibration were ultraviolet absorbent. The implications of these ultraviolet patterns for biochemical (flavonoid), taxonomic, pollination and eco-evolutionary research are discussed. Attention is drawn to the seasonal distribution of ultraviolet radiation in the northern hemisphere and its selective role on northern floras.  相似文献

Abstract The differentiation patterns of reproductive systems, including breeding and pollination systems, and perennation strategies of the genus Trillium were critically studied. The pedicellate- and sessile-flowered species with different floral morphologies and ecological distributions exhibited distinct modes of reproductive systems in relation to their habitat conditions. The pedicellate-flowered species occurring in stable mesic temperate deciduous forests reproduce exclusively by seeds, while sessile-flowered species growing in the alluvial flood plain habitats depend to a large extent on vegetative reproduction to compensate for the insufficient sexual reproduction under ecologically unstable conditions, e.g., frequent disturbance due to flooding. These sessile-flowered species are characterized by low ovule numbers, subsequent low seed outputs and low fecundity levels. In contrast to the sessile-flowered species, the pedicellate-erect-flowered species showed very high seed setting rates of over 50%. Breeding experiments for four Japanese species suggest that, although they substantially possess the capability of both inbreeding and outbreeding, the high fecundity levels are maintained by predominant inbreeding system. Furthermore, resource levels in the stock organs of these species obviously determine fecundity levels. As a consequence the amount of reserved food in the rhizomes transferred to the next season is determined, which gurantees a continuous reproductive activity of a given individual plant.  相似文献

The transport of α-methyl-l-glutamic acid was studied in Streptococcus faecalis. Energy-dependent uptake against substantial concentration gradients was observed. Kinetic experiments indicated that, in contrast to l-glutamic acid, only a single catalytic component (high affinity) and a diffusion controlled process participated in α-methyl-l-glutamic acid uptake. At concentrations up to 10 mM, α-methylglutamate transport was almost completely abolished in a mutant strain lacking a high affinity dicarboxylic amino acid transport system. In competition experiments, α-methylglutamic acid antagonized glutamate uptake via the high affinity system, and only slightly via the low affinity system. Column chromatography of cell extracts showed that very little (approx. 5%) of the accumulated amino acid was converted to metabolites during short term incubations. These studies indicate that, at concentrations up to 3–5 mM, α-methyl-l-glutamic acid can be used as a specific, relatively metabolically inert substrate of the high affinity dicarboxylic amino acid transport system in S. faecalis.  相似文献
