The mating status of an advertising male is one important factorfor female assessment. In species where already-mated malestry to attract additional females at some distance from theirmate, mating status may be difficult to assess. Limitationsin the time available to breed and a decrease in reproductivesuccess over the breeding season could make the costs outweighthe benefits of a time-consuming mate assessment process, whichautomatically postpones the onset of breeding. Time and energyconstraints will then limit the behavioral options for femalesin search of breeding opportunities, and females would suffera cost when assessing male mating status. Female choice maythen be better understood by analyzing the behavioral optionsfor females; the success of a strategy in which costly assessmentsare avoided and females choose mates indiscriminately, disregardingmating status ("fast" strategy), could be compared to the successof a strategy in which females carefully try to assess matingstatus ("coy" strategy). Nest predation should be included insuch an analysis because it influences the amount of male assistancefemales of polygynous males receive, as nest predation for onlyone of a polygynous male's two females leads to more male assistancefor the other female. In this study, I compare the outcome ofa "fast" strategy with that of a "coy" strategy under differentrates of nest predation. Although high probabilities of becominga mate of a polygynous male associated with a fitness reductiondecrease the relative success of a "fast" strategy, simulationsshow that high rates of nest predation considerably lower thedifference in the outcome of the two strategies. Therefore,the cost of assessing mating status must be relatively smallto be economical.  相似文献

Evolutionary psychologists have hypothesized, inspired by evolutionary biology, that parents should care less for children with whom they are not genetically related since these young do not contribute to the genetic fitness of the parents. Based on this, evolutionary psychologists have predicted that there will be an overrepresentation of step-parents as offenders in family-related killings of children. Data on child homicide, particularly from Canada, have supported this prediction in that the frequency of children killed was relatively high in families where one of the two parents was a step-parent. Here we present a survey of all child homicide that occurred in Sweden between 1975 and 1995. In contrast to the Canadian data, children in Sweden living in families with a step-parent were not at an increased risk compared with children living together with two parents to whom they were genetically related. In addition, there were no other indications that step-parents are overrepresented as offenders.  相似文献

Evolutionary models have been used to explain parental child homicide. One idea is that children with low fitness value to their parents will be less loved and cared for and therefore more at risk in conflict situations. It is then important to investigate if conflicts with the children are the major pattern in cases of parental child homicide. The aim of this study is to survey the background circumstances of parental child homicide in Sweden and relate them to the evolutionary model suggested. We more specifically investigate if the homicides occur in conflict situations with the child, the frequency of several victims (including the partner or former partner) and if there are differences in characteristics of homicides between stepparents and genetic parents. Our results show that parental child homicide is a heterogeneous phenomenon, where relatively few cases were the result of a conflict with the child‐victims. Instead severe conflicts between parents were the most common circumstance in which children were killed. Many children were victims of an extended suicide, which often included several members of the family. Step‐parents were more likely to kill children aggressively in conflicts with them than genetic parents. The complexity of the phenomenon suggests that an evolutionary model based upon a mechanism related to conflicts with the child‐victim has limited explanatory value on parental child homicide in general.  相似文献

Due to the controversy surrounding incipient avian parental care, ancestral parental care systems were reconstructed in a phylogeny including major extant amniote lineages. Using two different resolutions for the basal avian branches, transitions between the states no care, female care, biparental care and male care were inferred for the most basal branches of the tree. Uniparental female care was inferred for the lineage to birds and crocodiles. Using a phylogeny where ratites and tinamous branch off early and an ordered character-state assumption, a transition to biparental care was inferred for the ancestor of birds. This ancestor could be any organism along the lineage leading from the crocodile-bird split up to modern birds, not necessarily the original bird. We discuss the support for alternative avian phylogenies and the homology in parental care between crocodiles and birds. We suggest that the phylogenetic pattern should be used as a starting point for a more detailed analysis of parental care systems in birds and their relatives.  相似文献

Among‐population variance of phenotypic traits is of high relevance for understanding evolutionary mechanisms that operate in relatively short timescales, but various sources of nonindependence, such as common ancestry and gene flow, can hamper the interpretations. In this comparative analysis of 138 dog breeds, we demonstrate how such confounders can independently shape the evolution of a behavioural trait (human‐directed play behaviour from the Dog Mentality Assessment project). We combined information on genetic relatedness and haplotype sharing to reflect common ancestry and gene flow, respectively, and entered these into a phylogenetic mixed model to partition the among‐breed variance of human‐directed play behaviour while also accounting for within‐breed variance. We found that 75% of the among‐breed variance was explained by overall genetic relatedness among breeds, whereas 15% could be attributed to haplotype sharing that arises from gene flow. Therefore, most of the differences in human‐directed play behaviour among breeds have likely been caused by constraints of common ancestry as a likely consequence of past selection regimes. On the other hand, gene flow caused by crosses among breeds has played a minor, but not negligible role. Our study serves as an example of an analytical approach that can be applied to comparative situations where the effects of shared origin and gene flow require quantification and appropriate statistical control in a within‐species/among‐population framework. Altogether, our results suggest that the evolutionary history of dog breeds has left remarkable signatures on the among‐breed variation of a behavioural phenotype.  相似文献

In Wood WarblersPhylloscopus sibilatrix in South-Central Sweden, paired males spend considerable time trying to attract additional females either in outlying parts of their territory or in a secondary territory at some distance from the first. Approximately 20 % of the paired males succeed in attracting an additional female, while the rest stay monogamous. When the eggs hatch males assist in feeding the young. We studied parental care in monogamous pairs and investigated the proportion of males being paired in relation to the hatching of broods. Both feeding frequency and load size increased with age of the young. Feeding frequencies were higher in males than in females, while there was no difference in load size between the sexes. Nestlings are unable to thermoregulate the first days after hatching, and females spent considerable time brooding them. We also show that males do not gain by deserting the family when the broods hatch, since the probability to attract additional females at that time is low.
Zusammenfassung In einer Population Südschwedens wendeten die Männchen des Waldlaubsängers erhebliche Zeit auf, um entweder in entfernten Teilen ihres Reviers oder in einem zweiten Revier in einiger Entfernung weitere Weibchen anzulocken. Etwa 20 % der Männchen konnte so ein zweites Weibchen an sich binden, die übrigen blieben monogam. Nach dem Schlüpfen halfen die Männchen bei der Jungenfütterung. Die Brutpflege bei monogamen Paaren wurde untersucht, ebenso das Verhältnis der verpaarten Männchen zu geschlüpften Bruten. Fütterfrequenz und Größe einer Futterportion nahmen mit dem Wachstum der Jungen zu. Bei den Männchen war die Fütterfrequenz höher als bei den Weibchen, nicht jedoch die Größe einer Futterportion. Da die Nestlinge während der ersten Tage ihre Körpertemperatur nicht aufrecht erhalten können, werden sie vom Weibchen ausdauernd gehudert. Männchen gewinnen nichts, wenn sie die Familie nach dem Schlüpfen der Jungen verlassen, da die Wahrscheinlichkeit, ein neues Weibchen zu finden, in dieser Zeit gering ist.

Two minisatellite loci from a Eurasian songbird, the willow warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus) were isolated, sequenced and used as probes to detect more than 20 related hypervariable loci. In addition, a sequence flanking one of the minisatellite loci was isolated, and used to study a VNTR locus. The bird minisatellites have a repeat unit of either 12 (AGGGAAGGGCTC) or 17 bp (GGGGACAGGGGACACCC), repeated in tandem 40-100 times per locus, and shows partial similarity to the sequence motifs of human minisatellites. These sequences are among the most variable minisatellites known, with the incidence per gamete of new length alleles estimated from family studies of warblers to about 5.6% per locus. The bird minisatellite alleles show mendelian inheritance and segregation analysis indicates that they are derived from families of sequences with members on several autosomal linkage groups. Some of the warbler core sequences cross-hybridize to hypervariable loci in other species of birds, mammals and fishes.  相似文献

In some birds, males defend two spatially separated territories and attract females to each one in turn. it has been proposed that this behaviour, referred to as polyterritoriality, allows males to conceal their marital status, thereby deceiving females into accepting polygyny against their best interests. The deception hypothesis has gained general acceptance as an explanation for polyterritoriality in birds, but until recently the empirical basis for the hypothesis rested almost entirely on studies of Swedish populations of the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca). New findings, emerging from further studies of the pied flycatcher and of other species, suggest several alternative selection pressures that may have favoured polyterritoriality.  相似文献
