Daily levels of particulate matter (PM) in the ambient air (PM 2.5 and PM 10) were measured in a northern city of Thailand (Chiang Mai) from March 1998 to October 1999. Twenty-four-hour air particulate matter samples were collected each day with Airmetric Minivol portable air samplers. Monthly averages of PM 2.5 from four stations in Chiang Mai varied from 15.39 to 138.31microg/m(3) and 27.29 to 173.40 microg/m(3) for PM 10. The PM 2.5 annual average was 58.48 mg/m(3) and PM 10, 86.38 microg/m(3). Daily PM 2.5 (24h values) during the winter months in Chiang Mai frequently exceeded 200-300 microg/m(3). The maximum concentrations of PM 2.5 (24h average) in Chiang Mai air from December 1998 to April 1999 were 2.8-, 3.5-, 4.2-, 6.5- and 3.2-fold higher than the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), PM 2.5, 24h standard of 65 microg/m(3). From May to October, the mean 24h levels of PM 2.5 and PM 10 were at acceptable levels. The data shows that during the winter season (December to March), levels of PM 2.5 and PM 10 in the Chiang Mai atmosphere are very high, and there may be significant health implications associated with these high concentrations. During the summer season, the fine particles were generally within the acceptable levels. To our knowledge, these are the first measurements of PM 2.5 to be reported for the city of Chiang Mai and they indicate considerable ambient fine particle exposures to the Chiang Mai population. In addition, dichloromethane extracts of airborne particulate matter PM 2.5 or PM 10 collected in the months of winter in the city of Chiang Mai were mutagenic to Salmonella typhimurium strain TA100 without metabolic activation. In November 2007, a 46-year-old male Thai patient presented with chronic abdominal pain for over 3 years. Colonoscopy revealed a small parasite of about 2 × 1 mm in size attached to the cecum mucosa. The worm was removed endoscopically, fixed, and stained for morphological observations. The specimen was identified as Anchitrema sanguineum (Digenea: Anchitrematidae), a trematode first reported in a reptile, Chamaeleo vulgaris, from Egypt, and then sporadically found in the intestines of insectivorous bats and other mammals. The patient was treated with praziquantel but no more worms were found in his stool. His symptoms improved slightly but not cured completely. It remains unclear whether the chronic abdominal pain of the patient was caused by this trematode infection. Whatever is the pathogenicity of this trematode, this is the first human case of A. sanguineum infection in the literature. 相似文献

We measured radial variation of carbon isotope composition and vessel traits in tree species in seasonally dry forests of
Northeast Thailand to explore a more reliable and amenable method of tropical dendrochronology for trees that lack visually
detectable and consistent growth rings. Six Dipterocarpaceae species (3 Shorea, 2 Dipterocarpus, and 1 Hopea species) with indistinct or irregular growth rings and teak (Tectona grandis), a species which forms distinct growth rings, were examined. The δ13C value variations in all species showed annual cyclicity. Dipterocarpaceae species usually marked the lowest values of δ13C in the middle of the growing season, whereas teak had the lowest values at nearly the end of the growing season. Since the
growing season of the species examined almost corresponds to the rainy season in the study area, the δ13C variation was likely caused by the change in moisture availability. The different variation pattern of teak was attributable
to its stronger dependence on 13C-enriched reserved material early in the growing season. Changes in tree vessel traits for all species examined also showed
annual cyclicity. Dipterocarpaceae species showed significant correlation between δ13C values and vessel measurements. Vessel lumen (mean area, tangential and radial diameter, and proportion of total area) had
a negative correlation, whereas vessel frequency showed a positive correlation. The correlations indicated that changes in
vessel traits were caused by the seasonal variation of moisture available to the trees. Thus, we concluded that methods using
wood anatomy, as well as δ13C, have great potential for use as tools in tropical dendrochronology within the context of seasonal climate. 相似文献

The global spread of the four dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1 to -4) has made this virus a major and growing public health concern. Generally, pre-existing neutralizing antibodies derived from primary infection play a significant role in protecting against subsequent infection with the same serotype. By contrast, these pre-existing antibodies are believed to mediate a non-protective response to subsequent heterotypic DENV infections, leading to the onset of dengue illness. In this study, we prepared hybridomas producing human monoclonal antibodies (HuMAbs) against DENV using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients in the acute phase (around 1 week after the onset of illness) or the convalescent phase (around 2weeks after the onset of illness) of secondary infection. Interestingly, a larger number of hybridoma clones was obtained from patients in the acute phase than from those in the convalescent phase. Most HuMAbs from acute-phase infections were cross-reactive with all four DENV serotypes and showed significant neutralization activity to all four DENV serotypes. Thus, secondary DENV infection plays a significant role in stimulating memory cells to transiently increase the number of antibody-secreting plasma cells in patients in the early phase after the secondary infection. These HuMAbs will enable us to better understand the protective and pathogenic effects of DENV infection, which could vary greatly among secondarily-infected individuals. 相似文献

Blastocystis sp. is a common zoonotic intestinal protozoa which has been classified into 17 subtypes (STs). A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis in villagers living on the Thai-Myanmar border, where the risk of parasitic infection is high. A total of 207 stool samples were collected and DNA was extracted. PCR and sequencing using primers targeting small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene were performed. The prevalence of Blastocystis infection was 37.2% (77/207). ST3 (19.8%; 41/207) was the predominant subtype, followed by ST1 (11.6%; 24/207), ST2 (5.3%; 11/207), and ST4 (0.5%; 1/207). A phylogenetic tree was reconstructed using the maximum likelihood (ML) method based on the Hasegawa-Kishino-Yano + G + I model. The percentage of bootstrapped trees in which the associated taxa clustered together was relatively high. Some sequences of Blastocystis positive samples (TK18, 39, 46, 71, and 90) were closely related to animals (pig and cattle) indicating zoonotic risks. Therefore, proper health education in parasitic prevention for the villagers should be promoted to improve their personal hygiene. Further longitudinal studies are required to monitor the prevalence of parasitic infections after providing health education and to investigate Blastocystis ST in animals living in these villages. 相似文献

C4 photosynthesis is considered an adaptation to warm climates, where its functional benefits are greatest and C4 plants achieve their highest diversity and dominance. However, whether inherent physiological barriers impede the persistence of C4 species in cool environments remains debated. Here, we use large grass phylogenetic and geographical distribution data sets to test whether (1) temperature influences the rate of C4 origins, (2) photosynthetic types affect the rate of migration among climatic zones, and (3) C4 evolution changes the breadth of the temperature niche. Our analyses show that C4 photosynthesis in grasses originated in tropical climates, and that C3 grasses were more likely to colonise cold climates. However, migration rates among tropical and temperate climates were higher in C4 grasses. Therefore, while the origins of C4 photosynthesis were concentrated in tropical climates, its physiological benefits across a broad temperature range expanded the niche into warmer climates and enabled diversification into cooler environments. 相似文献

A community-based field survey on taeniasis and cysticercosis was performed in two villages in Thong Pha Phum District, Kanchanaburi Province, central Thailand, where 3 Taenia species, T. solium, T. saginata and T. asiatica, are sympatrically occurring. Four (0.6%) out of 667 stool samples were egg-positive for Taenia sp. by Kato–Katz technique. Three out of those four persons and other three persons who were Taenia egg-negative but having a recent (< 1 year) history of discharging worms in stool were treated with niclosamide. One Taenia egg-positive woman was not treated because of severe ascites. After treatment, three persons expelled long strobilae with scolices and two persons expelled strobilae without scolex. One Taenia egg-positive person did not expel any worms post-treatment. Among 5 persons, four expelled a single worm, whereas one expelled multiple worms, may be 6 worms but not confirmed by detection of scolices. One scolex was armed with hooklets, whereas 2 others did not. Multiplex PCR of 10 expelled proglottids (including 6 estimated worms from one patient) revealed that one sample was T. solium, one T. saginata, and 8 T. asiatica. A total of 159 residents agreed to receive a serological test for cysticercosis. By ELISA using partially purified glycoprotein antigen, 9 cases, 5 and 4 from villages A and B respectively, were found to be sero-positive. The five and an additional sample on the border line from village A were evaluated using confirmative immunoblot using recombinant chimeric antigen. Among the six samples, four including the border line sample were confirmed to be cysticercosis by immunoblotting. One of the 4 persons had neurological symptoms with nodular lesions in the brain by computed tomography. These 4 confirmed or suspected cysticercosis cases were free of T. solium worms, but two of them including confirmed NCC case had a past (> 1 year) history of expelling proglottids in the stool. 相似文献

Radial variations in vessel features (vessel lumen area and frequency) of four tropical tree species grown in tropical savanna, monsoon, and rainforest climates were investigated to detect indistinct annual rings. Leaf and soil water potentials were measured periodically to show annual variations in water availability and their relationship to radial variations in vessel features. In addition, the accuracy of annual-ring detection was estimated using trees of known age. Radial variations in vessel features showed annual cyclicity in all three sites. The vessel feature that showed clear annual cyclicity was different among the species and sites. Furthermore, the variation pattern of vessel features in the rainforest site tended to be different between two radii within individual trees, implying low synchronicity of wood formation in the wet area. Compared with leaf and soil water potentials, vessel features varied independent of water availability in all species in the rainforest site and most species in the savanna and monsoon sites. The direct effect of low water availability on vessel features was considered only in one species in the savanna and monsoon sites. Nevertheless, the deviation of vessel feature cycles from tree age was similar and reasonably small (mostly within ±10 %) among all sites. These results indicated a circannual rhythm in vessel formation. Thus, vessel feature changes seemed to aid in detecting annual rings in trees throughout wide tropical areas; however, asynchronous wood formation must be considered in dendrochronology, especially in humid tropics. 相似文献

Quantitative fecal egg counts represented as the number of eggs per gram of feces (EPG) are generally a reliable parameter to estimate the worm burden of intestinal and hepatic parasitoses. Although Haplorchis taichui (Digenea: Heterophyidae) is one of the most common minute human intestinal flukes, little is known about the relationship between EPG and the actual worm burden in patients or the severity of the disease. In the present study, fecal samples were collected from 25 villagers in northern Thailand before and after praziquantel treatment. The EPG values of each participant were determined by the modified cellophane thick smear method, and adult worms were collected from the whole stool after the treatment. Eggs per day per worm (EPDPW) of H. taichui were estimated 82 from egg counts and expelled worms. The EPG was not well correlated with the worm burden, and a reverse correlation was observed between the EPDPW and the worm burden. 相似文献
