Tetraspore development has been studied in Chondria tenuissimausing light and electron microscopy. The transformation of tetrasporangialmother cells into mature tetrasporangia involves a series ofstructural changes, especially of dictyosomes and of the nucleus. The youngest stage of tetrasporogenesis consists of a uninucleatetetraspore mother cell with synaptonemal complexes present duringearly prophase of meiosis I. Mitochondria are aggregated aroundthe nucleus, dictyosome activity is low, and proplastids occurin the peripheral cytoplasm. The cleavage furrows are initiatedalmost concomitantly with commencement of meiosis. When thecleavage furrows are initiated, spherical bodies bounded bytwo membranes are found within the cytoplasm; they develop intovacuoles with fibrillar contents (fv1), which increase in sizeduring tetraspore development by fusing with each other andwith Golgi vesicles. The Golgi vesicles and the vacuoles withfibrillar contents (fv1) contribute material to the developingtetraspore wall. During the middle stage of tetraspore formationthe vacuoles with fibrillar contents (fv1) are dominant, dictyosomeactivity increases, as well as the number of plastids and mitochondria;starch formation also increases. Stacked cisternae of the endoplasmicreticulum are found within the peripheral part of the nucleus. The same nuclear structures are also observed in tetrasporangiaof the marine red alga Gastroclonium clavalum. The final stageis characterized by the disappearance of vacuoles with fibrillarcontents (fv1) and of the stacked ER within the nucleus, presenceof straight, large dictyosomes which produce cored vesicles,an abundance of starch grains and by the formation of fullydeveloped chlorqplasts. The cored vesicles contain Thiéry-positivematerial and contribute to the formation of vacuoles with fibrouscontents (fv2) as they are dominant in the tetraspores beforetheir liberation. In differentiating sieve elements of Aegilops comosa var. thessalicadictyosomes are abundant and they produce numerous smooth vesicles.Coated vesicles seem to bud from smooth ones. Since both kindsof vesicles appear both in the cytoplasm and in associationwith the plasmalemma, it is proposed that they move to and fusewith the plasmalemma transferring products for cell wall synthesis.During differentiation sub-plasmalemmal microtubules are initiallyscarce and randomly oriented but soon afterwards they becomenumerous and transversely oriented to the long axis. Cellulosemicrofibrils in the cell wall appear to run parallel to themicrotubules and the latter may regulate microfibril orientation. Root protophloem sieve elements develop wave-like wall thickenings, which are, during development, overlaid by microtubules perpendicularto the long axis. Just after maturation these thickenings progressivelybecome smooth and finally the walls appear uniform in thickness. The wave-like wall thickenings may function as stored wall material, utilized in later stages of development when wall material willbe needed and its synthesis will be impossible because of theabsence of a synthesizing mechanism in the highly degraded protoplastsof mature sieve elements. It is suggested that in this way thethickenings may enable root protophloem sieve elements to growand keep pace with the active clongation of the surroundingcells. Floral nectaries of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis occur on the lowerinner side of the fused sepals and each one consists of numerous(50000–55000) secretory hairs, occupying a cylinder-likezone completely lining the inner side of the sepals. Each hairoriginates from a single protodermal mother cell and, at maturity,it is built up of a basal cell, a stalk, 35–40 intermediatecells and a tip secretory cell. Development of protodermal cellsinto secretory hairs is asynchronous, the first cells to initiatedevelopment being those situated in the lowermost part of thecylindrical zone, and development progressing upwards. Volume increase of protodermal mother cells initiating developmentis accompanied by cell polarization manifested by organelledisplacement towards the apical region. Secretory hairs areformed through a sequence of transverse and, later on, anticlinaldivisions. Divisions of apical cells are preceded by well definedpre-prophase microtubule bands, which foreshadow the plane ofthe forthcoming division and predict with accuracy the sitesof parental walls where the new cell plate fuses at cytokinesis. Stalks consist of either one or two cells. Two-celled stalksoccur in 40 per cent of secretory hairs and derive from a transversedivision of one stalk cell; the wall formed is always depositedparallel to the proximal and distal walls, but never to thelateral ones. The significance of this mode of division is discussedin relation to the fact that lateral walls are entirely impregnatedwith a cutin-like material that blocks apoplastic movement ofsolutes. Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis has been applied to thestudy of esterase, peroxidase and acid phosphatase patternsin seven taxa, namely Hordeum diploids (2n=14) (H. marinum,H. marinum I and H. hystrix), tetraploids (2n=28) (H. bulbosumand H. murinum subsp. leporinum) and Taeniatherum (2n=14) (T.caput-medusae and T. caput-medusae I) in order to elucidatetheir phylogenetic relationships. On the basis of our experimentalresults the seven taxa may be placed in the following threegroups; (1) diploid Hordeum (H. marinum, H. marinum I, H. hystrix);(2) tetraploid Hordeum (H. bulbosum, H. murinum subsp. leporinum);(3) Taeniatherum (T. caput-medusae, T. caput-medusae I). Esterase, peroxidase and acid phosphatase patterns of the twoHordeum diploid taxa (H. marinum and H. marinum I) are verysimilar suggesting their close phylogenetic relationship; thesame is true for both the taxa of the genus Taeniatherum (T.caput-medusae and T. caput-medusae I). The taxa of the Taeniatherumgroup compared with the diploid Hordeum (H. marinum, H. marinumI, H. hystrix) and the tetraploid Hordeum (H. bulbosum, H. murinumsubsp. leporinum) show a lower degree of phylogenetic relationshipand seem to be equally distant from them. The tetraploid Hordeumgroup shows a higher phylogenetic relationship with diploidHordeum group than with the Taeniatherum group. These results confirm that the genus Taeniatherum, previouslyconsidered as part of the genus Hordeum, should be regardedas a separate genus. The ultrastructure of cytoplasmic inclusions in pericarp cells(cystocarpic plant) of Polysiphonia deusta shows five structuraltypes of inclusions; (1) membrane-bounded crystalloid inclusionsthat are composed of tetragonally packed fibrils, each 8 nmdiam., spaced 17.5 nm between centres; (2) membrane-boundedcrystalloid-like inclusions with incomplete structure; (3) unboundedcrystalline body without a distinct crystal lattice pattern;(4) membrane-limited fibrillar inclusions; (5) fibrillogranularstructure. The membranes of the first two inclusions were coveredwith ribosomes and seem to be elements of endoplasmic reticulum. Polysiphonia deusta, pericarp cells, cellular inclusions  相似文献

The differentiation and obliteration of protophloem sieve elementsin leaves of the grass Aegilops comosa var. thessalica havebeen studied by electron microscopy. These elements differentiatesimilarly to metaphloem sieve elements of the same plant andother monocotyledons. Plasmalemma, smooth endoplasmic reticulum(ER), mitochondria, P-type plastids and sometimes nuclear remnantsconstitute the protoplasmic components at maturity, all areperipherally distributed. The differentiation of end walls intosieve plates and the presence of sieve areas on the lateralwalls indicate that protophloem sieve elements are componentsof sieve-tube. They may be functional for a brief period butsoon after their maturation they are compressed and finallyobliterated by the stretching of actively-growing surroundingcells. The protoplasmic components of mature elements degenerateand are destroyed during obliteration of the sieve elements. Eleven Origanum species were investigated in this study. Inall these species, leaf glandular hairs have the same structureand they have been found to follow a common developmental pattern. They originate from a single protodermal cell which dividessuccessively parallel to leaf surface to give rise to the footcell, the stalk cell and the mother cell of the head. The latterundergoes a series of symmetric and asymmetric anticlinal divisionsresulting in a 12-celled head (four small cells in the centreand eight large cells peripherally arranged). Determinationof the glandular scale morphology within the Lamiaceae generaand further comparison between the various gland types wouldbe helpful to systematics. Gracilaria verrucosa is a very common marine red alga of Greekcoasts. The diploid carposporophyte which develops attachedto the female gametophyte of Gracilaria is described. The immaturecystocarps are very small while the mature ones are globose, ostiolate and are borne profusely all over the surface of thethallus. The earliest observed fusion cell is small and fusesprogressively with adjacent vegetative cells to form a largemultinucleate cell. From this fusion cell gonimoblast initialsoriginate, dividing further and giving rise to a large numberof gonimoblast cells. The resultant carposporophyte consistsof a basal-central, multinucleate cell surrounded by a conicalor hemispherical mass of gonimoblast cells. Chains or clustersof successively maturing carpospores are borne from the terminalgonimoblast cells. The liberation of mature carpospores takesplace through the ostiole of the cystocarp. The liberated carposporeslack cell walls and are naked in a mucilage mass. Gracilaria verrucosa (Hudson) Papenfuss, Gigartinales, Gracilariaceae, Rhodophyta, carposporophyte, development  相似文献
