Functional Aspects of the Salt Glands of the Plumbaginaceae

X-ray microanalysis and diffuse reflectance infrared Fouriertransform spectrometry were used to determine the presence andratios of elements in salt secretions from salt glands of greenhouseand experimentally-manipulated leaves of five species of thePlumbaginaceae Sodium, magnesium, silica, sulphur, phosphorus,chloride, potassium, calcium and carbonate were detected insecretions of greenhouse-grown plants. The salt glands of excisedleaves challenged by solutions of KI, KCl, NaCl, Na₂SO₄, MgCl₂and MgSO₄ secreted principally the ions of the challenging solutions. Key words: Ion transport, secretion     

Response of Wheat Seedlings to Low O2 Concentrations in Nutrient Solution: II. K +/Na+ SELECTIVITY OF ROOT TISSUES9

This paper reports the effects of low O₂ concentration (0–01,0–055, and 0.115mol m^–3) in nutrient solutions onK⁺/Na⁺ selectivity of growing and mature root tissues of 6-to 8-d-old, intact, wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Gamenya) seedlings. Increases in anaerobic catabolism and decreases in O₂ uptake,K⁺ uptake and K⁺/Na⁺ selectivity were all more pronounced and/oroccurred at higher external O₂ concentrations in the apex (0–2mm) than in the expanding tissues (2–4 mm); these growingtissues were, in turn, more affected than the expanded tissuesof the roots (4–12 mm). Selectivity for K⁺ over Na⁺ in roots and shoots was particularlysensitive to O₂ deficiency. For example, in apical tissues (0–2mm) K ⁺ /Na⁺ selectivity was already reduced at 0.115 mol m^–3O₂, yet at this O₂ concentration there was no effect on eithergrowth or (K⁺/Na⁺) uptake. Upon transfer from 0.01 to 0.26 mol m^–3 O₂, a detailedstudy of the 12 mm root tips showed that 70% of these tips regainedhigh (K⁺ + Na⁺) concentrations and K⁺/^Na+ ratios. In contrast,there was no recovery in the remaining 30% of the 12 mm roottips. Net K⁺ transport to the shoots during the period afterre-aeration was negative for the population as a whole. Theseverity of these effects supports the view that the root tipsand the stele were more susceptible to O2 deficiency than wasthe cortex of the fully-developed root tissues. Movement of Anopheles gambiae s.l. malaria vectors between villages in The Gambia

ovement of mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gambiae complex (mixed wild populations of An.arabiensis, An.gambiae and An.melas ) between three neighbouring rural villages in The Gambia was investigated by mark-release-recapture. A total of 12,872 mosquitoes were collected in bednets, marked with a magenta fluorescent powder and released over a 15-day period in one of the villages. A further 15,507 mosquitoes were collected in exit traps, marked with a yellow powder and released over the same period. Mosquitoes were captured daily in all three villages using pyrethrum spray catches, as well as bednet and exit trap catches. The catching period extended for 6 days after the last day of release.
Of the mosquitoes released, 372 (1.3%) were recaptured 2–21 days later. Of these recaptures, 272 were caught in the release village, and 98 were caught in other villages situated 1–1.4 km away. The 'movement index' between villages was calculated as 17.2% (12.2–22.4% confidence limits) for mosquitoes released after feeding and 20.1% (14.7–25.3%) for those released unfed.
These results suggest that movement of mosquitoes between neighbouring villages in The Gambia seriously affects the entomological evaluation of pyrethroid-impregnated bednet programmes in areas where treated and untreated villages are interspersed.     

Studies on the fungicidal control of stem lesions caused by Botrytis cinerea on glasshouse tomatoes

In glasshouse pot experiments, uptake of benomyl, thiophanate-methyl and carbendazim from equivalent soil applications (in the range 0–003– 0–035 %^a-i- ^atarateof ²&4 ml/plant) gave equal levels of control of Botrytis lesions developing from inoculations of freshly exposed leaf scars on tomato stems. Spray applications of benomyl to exposed leaf scars controlled infection at concentrations down to 0025 % a.i. The effect of lower concentrations of the stem spray could be markedly enhanced either by the addition of a mineral oil (2 % Actipron) or by a prior soil application of benomyl at a low rate which on its own had little effect on lesion development. Protectant spray applications of glycophene and vinclozolin gave levels of control quite comparable to that of benomyl at equivalent concentrations. Evidence was obtained that the lesions formed at the artificially-inoculated leaf scars at the top of the stems of young pot-grown tomato plants were larger than those lower down. In spite of this, the level of disease control with soil applications of fungicides containing or generating carbendazim (MBC) was greater at the top than at the bottom, probably because of the normal migration of the fungicides and their accumulation at the extremities of the plant. In an observation trial in a commercial crop of tomatoes, benomyl applied either as five soil drenches at approximately monthly intervals, or as two drenches followed by five sprays at three-weekly intervals, or as five sprays alone gave marked reductions in plant loss and number of Botrytis stem lesions in both cvs Eurocross BB and Cudlow Cross. Those stem lesions which did develop, however, were generally as large as those on untreated control plants. Five sprays of dichlofiuanid gave similar levels of disease control. All the treatments gave apparently higher yields (statistically untested) in Eurocross BB, but less consistent responses were recorded in Cudlow Cross.
