Wetlands are among the most diverse environments on the planet and are strongly threatened by human activities. Their restoration and/or mitigation of human impacts, therefore, relies on information that can aid to the management of impacted wetlands so that they return to a (semi-) natural state. We investigate in this study the relationship between dormant stages of zooplankton and clay removal in areas subjected to mining. We evaluate whether a gradual increase in topsoil addition from donor natural wetlands to the sediment of mined wetlands influenced the zooplankton community. Eight wetlands were sampled in the Sinos River floodplain, four natural and four mined. In the laboratory, four field sediment samples were incubated for zooplankton hatching in five treatments comprising sediments from: mined wetlands, natural wetlands, and three treatments containing mined sediments added with low (5%), medium (20%) and high (40%) quantities of sediment from natural wetlands. Hatching consisted of 61 individuals distributed across eight zooplankton taxa. Copepod nauplii were the most abundant (31.1%) followed by Epiphanes sp. (29.5%) and Ovalona glabra (16.4%). While natural wetlands provided 42.6% of the hatched zooplankton, mined wetlands had just 6.5%. Zooplankton richness and abundance were higher in natural wetland sediments compared with mined and added sediment wetlands. To some degree, the sediment soil donation from natural to mined wetlands was considered viable. As long as prior studies are performed to test the size and quality of the dormant banks present in the sediment of candidate donor wetlands, sediment from donor wetlands may aid in the establishment of a more diverse community in disturbed systems.

  1. Waterbird‐mediated endozoochory is an essential mechanism for the dispersal of sessile organisms in freshwater ecosystems. However, in the neotropics there are no previous studies of how different waterbird species vary in the dispersal functions they perform, and how seasonality influences endozoochory. In this study, we identified plant diaspores dispersed in faeces of five South American waterfowl (Brazilian teal Amazonetta brasiliensis, yellow‐billed teal Anas flavirostris, ringed teal Callonetta leucophrys, coscoroba swan Coscoroba coscoroba, and white‐faced whistling‐duck Dendrocygna viduata).
  2. We collected 165 faecal samples from five wetlands in southern Brazil surrounded by pasture and rice fields, then separated and measured intact seeds and other diaspores. Using generalised linear models, we tested how diaspore abundance and taxonomic richness differed among bird species and between cold (April–September) and warm (October–March) periods. We also analysed bird‐specific and seasonal variations in diaspore composition through principal coordinates analysis and permutational multivariate analysis of variance. We used indicator species analysis to determine which diaspore species discriminated between bird species and seasons. Finally, we measured diaspore length in order to analyse differences among waterfowl species in the size of diaspores dispersed.
  3. We found 2,066 intact diaspores from 40 different plant taxa, including seeds of 37 angiosperms and diaspores of Lycophyta (Isoetes cf. maxima), Pteridophyta (Azolla filiculoides), and Charophyceae. There was at least one diaspore in 65% of all faecal samples. Diaspores of native amphibious and emergent plants were dominant. We found 1,835 diaspores (from 33 taxa) in the cold period but only 231 (23 taxa) in the warm period. Seeds of the grass Zizaniopsis bonariensis and of the sedge Rynchospora sp. were the most abundant taxa. A strong interaction between bird species and season was the most important predictor of variation in both taxonomic richness and abundance of diaspores. The taxonomic composition of diaspores differed among waterfowl species and season. Indicator species analysis identified 12 plant taxa associated with particular bird species and seasons. Coscoroba swan, the largest bodied species in our study dispersed a higher proportion (8.2%) of large (length >2 mm) seeds.
  4. Despite considerable overlap, there are important differences in the plants dispersed by each species, and the smallest (ringed teal) and largest (coscoroba swan) birds are particularly different. All five waterfowl species are distributed over wide areas of South America and here we demonstrated that they are likely to be important plant vectors connecting wetland species at different geographical scales. Many of these plants have previously been assumed to lack mechanisms for long‐distance dispersal.

In the Neotropics where fragmentation is common, environmental factors structuring fish communities are poorly known. In this study two hypotheses were tested in 13 coastal wetlands of southern Brazil: 1) physical features (such as wetland area, habitat diversity, water depth and temperature, and water and sediment chemistry) are important determinants of richness, density and composition of fish assemblages; and 2) species richness and composition of fish assemblages differ between wetlands with different hydroperiods (i.e. permanent versus intermittent). A total of 1,597 individuals distributed among 20 species were collected. Richness was positively associated with wetland area and water depth and it was negatively associated with water conductivity. The species-area power function explained 27.3% of the variation in richness. Fish richness was similar between permanent and intermittent wetlands. The density was negatively associated with water depth and temperature, and it was positively correlated with water nitrate concentration. The first three axes from the CCA accounted for 55.5% of total variation in fish composition. The most important variables related to fish composition were percentage of sediment organic matter, phosphorus concentration, habitat diversity and water depth. Composition of fish species changed among permanent and intermittent wetlands. Understanding the environmental factors that shape and maintain the biodiversity in these ecosystems is essential to develop conservation and management programs of wetlands in this region, where more than 90% of wetland systems have already been lost due to anthropogenic activities.  相似文献

It has been known for quite some time that tetrahydrobiopterin (H4B) is prone to autoxidation in the presence of molecular oxygen. Evidence has been presented that in this process superoxide radicals may be released, although their intermediacy never has been directly proven. In the present study, the autoxidation of H4B was reinvestigated with the aim to find direct evidence for superoxide formation. By means of two specific assays, namely elicitation of luminescence from lucigenin and ESR-spectrometric detection of the DEPMPO-OOH radical adduct, the release of free superoxide radicals was unequivocally demonstrated. The production of superoxide radicals was further corroborated by interaction with nitric oxide. The kinetics of the autoxidation process was established. Our data fully confirm earlier conclusions that the direct reaction between H4B and oxygen serves as an initiation reaction for the further, rapid reaction of the thus formed superoxide with H4B, thereby very likely establishing a chain reaction process involving reduction of molecular oxygen by the intermediary tetrahydrobiopterin radical. Conclusively, because H4B can per se induce oxidative stress, an in vivo overproduction of this pterin, as is evident in various diseases, may be responsible for the observed acceleration of pathophysiological pathways.  相似文献

Habitat structure determines spider diversity in highland ponds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Wetlands (e.g. ponds, meadows) can be found in many landscapes, playing an important role in maintaining regional biodiversity and supporting heterogeneous communities. Spiders are diversified predators that are highly influenced by changes in plant community structure, heterogeneous habitats sustain high spider diversity and abundance. We investigated the characteristics of spider biodiversity in ponds with different habitat structures, by examining patterns across habitats of ponds with different vegetation levels. Sampling took place in four occasions over a year. We compared spider abundance, species richness and composition among ponds including distinct vegetation variables, related to life form, type of leaves, coverage and height. Overall 1174 individuals (194 adults) of 11 families and 37 morphospecies were sampled. We found mostly expected differences in the manner that communities were structured between different habitats. Thus, higher variability of abundance was explained for higher habitat structure of ponds. We also found differences in species composition between ponds with low emergent vegetation and higher habitat structures. Additionaly, spiders were consistently structured more by turnover than nestedness components, with a greater beta diversity of web-builders. Our results suggest varying levels of habitat structures and species substitution shape pond spider communities, depending on habitat heterogeneity and spider guild. Those findings demonstrate the clear role of spatial habitat structure, with more spider species preferring to build webs or actively hunt at vegetated environments on ponds.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of environmental factors in fish communities of 146 palustrine wetlands, covering a wide range of altitude and wetland surface area in Neotropical region. Two questions were analyzed: (1) Are wetland altitude, area, habitat diversity, hydroperiod (permanent and intermittent), ecoregion, and macroinvertebrate richness good predictors of occurrence, richness, abundance and composition of fish species? and (2) Are the predictors of fish richness similarly applicable to different ecoregions in Southern Brazil? Our data showed that fish richness was related to habitat diversity and macroinvertebrate richness, and fish occurrence was influenced by wetland area and macroinvertebrate richness. Fish abundance was influenced by altitude, hydroperiod and macroinvertebrate richness, and the fish composition was jointly associated with ecoregion, and hydroperiod. The predictors of fish richness were not similarly applicable to different ecoregions. Our results showed that the habitat diversity, macroinvertebrate richness, altitude and hydroperiod were the environmental predictors that potentially structure and maintain the fish occurrence and richness in southern Brazil palustrine wetlands. Such information is essential to develop wetland conservation and management programs in this region, where more than 90 % of wetland systems have already been lost and the remaining ones are still at high risk due to the anthropogenic activities.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the ultrastructure of the interface zone between the nervous tissue and the connective vascular sheath that surround the central ganglia of the terrestrial snail of Megalobulimus abbreviatus and test its permeability using lanthanum as an electron dense tracer. To this purpose, ganglia from a group of snails were fixed by immersion in a 2% colloidal lanthanum solution, and a second group of animals was injected in the foot with either a 2%, 10% or 20% lanthanum nitrate solution and then sacrificed 2 or 24 h after injection. Ganglia from both groups were processed for transmission electron microscopy. The vascular endothelium, connective tissue and basal lamina of variable thickness that ensheathe the nervous tissue and glial cells of the nervous tissue constitute the interface zone between the haemolymph and the neurones. The injected lanthanum reached the connective tissue of the perineural capsule; however, it did not permeate into the nervous tissue because the basal lamina interposed between both tissues interrupted this passage. Moreover, the ganglia fixed with colloidal lanthanum showed electron dense precipitates between the glial processes in the area adjacent to the basal lamina. It can be concluded from these findings that, of the different components of the haemolymph-neuronal interface, only the basal lamina, between the perineural capsule and the nervous tissue, limits the traffic of substances to and from the central nervous system of this snail.  相似文献

The expansion of rice fields is one of the main human activities responsible for the decline of natural wetlands throughout the world. However, rice fields have been recognized as having considerable potential value for many aquatic species. In this sense, an important question from the point of view of biodiversity conservation is the adequacy of these agricultural wetlands as an integrated managed landscape that contributes to maintain a rich biodiversity. The two main questions of this study were: (1) Do richness, density, and composition of macroinvertebrates differ in rice fields with different management practices (flooded and dry)?; and, (2) Do richness, density and composition of macroinvertebrates change in rice fields over the rice cultivating phases? Six collections were carried out in six rice fields with different management practices after cultivation (three dry and three flooded during the fallow phase). The macroinvertebrates were sampled using a corer (7.5-cm diameter) inserted 10 cm into the substratum of the rice fields. We recorded 6,425 macroinvertebrates, comprising 71 macroinvertebrate taxa. Macroinvertebrate richness and density varied over the rice cultivating cycle. The different management practices adopted after cultivation did not influence the macroinvertebrate richness and density; however, they influenced composition. Thus, the mosaic created by the variation of flooded and dry rice fields would provide the setting for a greater number of taxa within the agricultural landscape. The difference in taxa composition between flooded and dry rice fields is an interesting result in terms of biodiversity conservation. Rice producers could maintain part of their agricultural land flooded during the fallow phase. These management practices adopted could be an important strategy for biodiversity conservation in areas where the natural wetlands were converted into rice fields.  相似文献

Two hypotheses were tested: that the artificial sandbar opening decreases the richness, diversity and abundance of fishes and alters the fish composition in floodplain ponds; that the salinity variations influence fish richness, diversity, abundance, as well as composition. Results suggest that artificial sandbar openings did not reduce the richness or diversity of freshwater fishes in southern Brazil floodplain ponds. Nevertheless, this process causes an increase in salinity, which determines significant differences in species composition between natural and managed areas. In this sense, the artificial sandbar opening must be considered with caution, since the area of study is one of the most important conservation units in wetland systems of southern Brazil.  相似文献

Riffle beetle community structure is influenced by the preservation condition of stream riparian vegetation. Though, the width of riparian vegetation required to ensure conservation of stream insect communities is still controversial. Effects of alterations in riparian vegetation widths on stream insect community structure can be overcame by other environmental variables, like substrate type, hindering accurate assessments. We tested the effects of different riparian vegetation widths (>40, 30–15, 15–5 and <5 m) along with different substrate types (inorganic and organic) on riffle beetle community structure in southern Brazilian 4th‐ to 5th‐order streams. Riparian buffer widths and substrate types influenced riffle beetle community structure, but no interaction between them was observed. Reduced riparian vegetation widths downstream were associated with changes in riffle beetle dominant genera (Macrelmis predominated only in streams with narrowest riparian widths). Additionally, communities in organic substrates had lower equitability and different dominant genera (Hexacylloepus and Heterelmis) than inorganic ones. Our results showed that reductions in riparian vegetation were associated with water pollution and changes in riffle beetle community structure, suggesting that buffer strips narrower than 5 m are not adequate to maintain environmental integrity of southern Brazilian streams. These results have special importance for the conservation of stream insects in Brazil, as reductions up to less than 5 m in stream banks of small properties are allowed by the new Brazilian Forest Code, independently of stream order.  相似文献
