Molecular recognition of anions by synthetic receptors

Over the past year, several significant developments have been made in the field of anion binding. The fundamental principles of molecular recognition are increasingly being better understood, and of particular interest are reports of several synthetic anion receptors able to perform their task in complex natural media. Additionally, macroscopic devices such as anion specific electrodes and membranes based on a molecular recognition approach are now being made.     

Population Changes of Heterodera glycines and Soybean Yields Resulting from Soil Treatment with Alachlor,Fenamiphos, and Ethoprop

The population dynamics of Heterodera glycines as influenced by alachlor, fenamiphos, and ethoprop alone and in herbicide-nematicide combinations were studied in the field. Numbers of H. glycines juveniles and eggs were higher at midseason and harvest where nematicides were applied. Fenamiphos alone or in combination with alachlor provided better control of H. glycines and greater seed yields than treatments with ethoprop. Numbers of H. glycines eggs at harvest in 1980 were positively correlated with numbers of juveniles at planting in 1981 and negatively related to seed yield in 1981.

Rhizobium meliloti swims by unidirectional, intermittent rotation of right-handed flagellar helices.

The 5 to 10 peritrichously inserted complex flagella of Rhizobium meliloti MVII-1 were found to form right-handed flagellar bundles. Bacteria swam at speeds up to 60 microns/s, their random three-dimensional walk consisting of straight runs and quick directional changes (turns) without the vigorous angular motion (tumbling) seen in swimming Escherichia coli cells. Observations of R. meliloti cells tethered by a single flagellar filament revealed that flagellar rotation was exclusively clockwise, interrupted by very brief stops (shorter than 0.1 s), typically every 1 to 2 s. Swimming bacteria responded to chemotactic stimuli by extending their runs, and tethered bacteria responded by prolonged intervals of clockwise rotation. Moreover, the motility tracks of a generally nonchemotactic ("smooth") mutant consisted of long runs without sharp turns, and tethered mutant cells showed continuous clockwise rotation without detectable stops. These observations suggested that the runs of swimming cells correspond to clockwise flagellar rotation, and the turns correspond to the brief rotation stops. We propose that single rotating flagella (depending on their insertion point on the rod-shaped bacterial surface) can reorient a swimming cell whenever the majority of flagellar motors stop.     

Detection of cross-reactive determinants shared by human monoclonal IgM reacting with myelin-associated glycoprotein

Monoclonal IgM from patients with peripheral neuropathy frequently have anti-myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) activity. We investigated the idiotypes of 10 monoclonal anti-MAG by using rabbit polyclonal antisera. Three groups of anti-idiotypic antisera could be distinguished. Four sera reacted only with the immunizing protein. Two sera reacted with a single other anti-MAG IgM in addition to the immunizing one. Immunoenzymatic studies showed that these two couples of anti-MAG IgM reacted identically with 100% cross-inhibition, indicating that the whole set of idiotypes identified by the rabbit antiserum was present on both IgM antibodies. The four other anti-idiotypic sera reacted with the homologous IgM, as well as with most of the other anti-MAG IgM. In contrast to the previous antisera the binding of these four sera to the homologous IgM could not be inhibited by other cross-reacting anti-MAG IgM. However, when a heterologous IgM was used for coating, these antisera with one exception showed complete cross-inhibition. The absence of inhibition by purified MAG of the patient of the anti-idiotypic antisera sera suggests that these antibodies are most likely to be directed against framework determinants rather than against combining site epitopes.
